Traditions are significant because they have such a good influence on our lives. People spend time together and go to locations to witness  customs such as festivals, celebrations, decorations, delicacies, and community time, learning to appreciate the positive qualities and the joy they provide to our lives.

The "Thee Kuttichathan Thira" is a centuries-old ritual performed on the temple grounds in northern Kerala. Photographed in my hometown of Balussery, Calicut,  in the state of Kerala, India.

Young and old alike cluster before a modest temple devouring their ears with the trancelike chants and cadenced drumbeats in perfect synchronicity, Men with lit palm frond lights swishing embers  off into the air... Suddenly, a collective breath is exhaled and the void is filled with awe...! The god has arrived... 

Theyyam - The Dance of God

This ancient ritual dance form entices everyone with its magnificent costumes, vivid headgears, and vibrant makeup. It's a delight to watch  “Mukhamezhuthu”, the art of painting the face, which  varies according to the role and myth of Theyyam. Natural ingredients  are employed as colours in theyyam make-up to generate minute expressions.

THE FACE OF GOD

Watching a human transform into a tiger sounds surreal. But as “Navarathri” season sets in and marks the arrival of the goddess, every street witnesses tigers on two feet roaring and dancing around to celebrate the entirety of her magnificence.

Note: Tiger dance, famously known as ’Hulivesha’ in Kannada or ’Pilivesha’ in Tulu  is a unique form of folk culture especially found in Tulunadu region of Karnataka.

This was shot in a cold winter morning at “Nandi Hills” a beautiful hang out location near Bangalore, as part of a  memorable photo walk with a few fellow enthusiastic friends. This frame resonates with my life, so it has remained dear to my heart even after so many years.
I'd like to dedicate this to my wife, an artist herself, mother to our daughter and a perfect home maker. She is my most steadfast supporter and critic in our 21 years of journey together.
