This token generates a deterministic set of minimal, abstract buildings of varying widths, heights, transparencies, and patterns, assembling a skyline view of your own unique imaginary city. Each city comes with its own randomized city day.

Each mint has a native setting (Day or Night) which combined with the current time of viewing influences real-time movements of celestial bodies in your mint, e.g. on a mint with the Day setting, the sun will only appear when viewed during the day. The piece will re-render every minute.

The individual strokes of this token feature some of my latest developments of an algorithm that generatively simulates the texture of print imperfections. They are randomized at each render to give it a unique character. Note that depending on the complexity of each mint, some renders may introduce a brief pause. The aesthetics are greatly inspired by plotter art of early computer artists such as 'City Painting' by Grace C. Hertlein.

'Automatism' is inspired by the practice of artists where they are given a writing implement and a blank surface, and they go freestyle, almost mindlessly filling up the space with whatever comes to their minds and out of their hands. I've often wondered where a machine's mind and "hand" would wander given the same opportunity.

This project explores the age-old computer art phenomenon of inviting the viewer to actively participate in the interpretation of the visual output. The way "Sharp-E" draws the strokes is through a mix of various movements — irregular curves, straight lines, sudden changes in direction — in a classic random walk algorithm, while avoiding overlaps with previously drawn strokes. There are no pre-programmed forms per se, but nevertheless it can be common for the viewer to perceive images, symbols, meaning in the generated output.

"Since the classical age of Greece, the golden ratio has been well known as the most balanced and therefore most aesthetically perfect proportion. In fact, it is supposedly often found in the fine arts and architecture and it is certainly important in geometry. But where is the proof that it is really the most beautiful proportion?

"The computer is proving to be a useful tool in exact art theory. Works of computer art are produced with the help of programs that describe the logic of the construction and its relevant measures. By varying the parameters you can vary the shapes of objects, and on the basis of the reaction of the public you can determine the best option. So it is possible to find valid rules to design works of art.

"A statistical evaluation would be interesting. Please email me with your results for the optimal proportion."

I found it heartwarming that in 2011, Herbert W. Franke wrote the above, accompanied with a simple functional program on a Wolfram Demonstration page (https://demonstrations.wolfram.com/IsTheGoldenRatioReallyTheMostBeautifulProportion/) titled 'Is the Golden Ratio Really the Most Beautiful Proportion?' and invited people to submit their findings to him.

The main idea behind this project is ratios, a variety of them, used in a variety of ways, such as how a rectangle is repeatedly subdivided, or how it influences the aspect ratio of the piece, or how the colors in a palette are selected. These are represented in various styles, some of which are inspired by the aesthetic of Herbert W. Franke's diverse artworks, and his openness to experimentation with new technologies, such as plotter drawings, screens, screenprints, or 2D and 3D digital renderings.

This project, while not designed to be a formal statistical evaluation, is but my fun, colorful, and humble response to your inquiry, dear Herbert.

We look at things that are seemingly random and can't help but form relationships between them. For centuries people of many different nations and cultures have looked up to the skies and perceived patterns, objects, mythical creatures from scattered stars.

This work, initially titled 'Chaos', began as a study for my project 'Gestalt' to explore the idea of working with a foundation of hidden random points and connecting points with curves in interesting ways. Almost by accident I discovered a technique which ended up creating outputs resembling scenes from some otherworldly cosmos. While it produced some visually interesting outputs, they didn't quite fit the direction for 'Gestalt' and only a portion of the algorithm was used. 

The study was recently revisited and further refined to explore something different to 'Gestalt' (yet would nod to it), blur the lines between abstraction and figuration, and lean into the atmospheric moodiness of that once accidental output. 'Constellations' plays with the concept of interconnectivity, the meeting and interacting of hidden elements, and the emergence of patterns and interpretations from chance encounters (or kismet).

The underlying grid, the start and end of the colored shapes, the color styles, the transitioning point from order to chaos, are randomized. The names behind the Styles of this token are derived from artists who have greatly inspired me, all or most of whom have incorporated randomness or chaos in their art in one way or another.

The price and number of editions were also chosen using a pseudorandom number generator.

Never take for granted that we sit in the safety of our homes, behind our windows, sheltered from the elements outside. 

The characteristics of the rain outside the window, and the window itself, will be determined by the mint hash. However, the background color of this piece will constantly change based on the hour of day it is loaded, hence note that the thumbnail will only technically be accurate 1/24 hours out of the day as it represents a static snapshot taken at the time of token rendering.

100% of the primary proceeds will be donated towards flood relief efforts for the devastating December 2021 floods in Malaysia.

Individually, the mints of this token are very simple. Each mint generates half of two cube forms, and each half is assigned random hues (in multiples of 10, from 0 to 360). Collectively as a project, this token challenges the approach of looking for "rarities" in a new way. How the cubes are rendered leaves the possibility for multiple mints to potentially join up on the sides with colors that perfect match each other. Will you find your lost twin?

When Yazid and Zancan started their fxcollab journey, they knew very little about each other. They learnt about their rich cultural differences, their complementary graphic styles, and a 7-hour timezone difference. What they did have in common was each had two kids about the same age (one a pair of girls, the other boys).

Every kid was born a builder; every kid likes to sit in nature. It’s their way of discovering the world and dreaming of their future accomplishments. While they marvel at the heights of the cities and monuments they construct out of stacks of cubes, parents marvel at their ability to elaborate an unlimited range of worlds out of a limited range of materials. 

This project celebrates the humble and versatile cube. A deceptively simple yet powerful object of play and learning, regardless of age, whether you’re stacking them up in a sandbox, or learning 3D graphics for the first time. 

This project is dedicated to kids, those who were once children, to the dreamers and builders who still enjoy playing with cubes.

Coded in Vanilla JS, the project combines Yazid's iconic “Hashed/Hatched” aesthetic incorporated into childhood wooden toy block structures, and Zancan's signature lush foliage and framework, which enables all iterations to be plottable.

Joy. Sadness. Anger. Disgust. Surprise. Fear.

Six core emotions outlined by Charles Darwin in his groundbreaking 1872 book, 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals', where he claimed that certain facial movements universally revealed these underlying emotions, regardless of where you were from and how you grew up. Smiling meant happy, a scowl, anger, a frown, sadness. This simple and seemingly intuitive concept, though eventually challenged, endures until now, more than a century on, permeating our courts, classrooms, workplaces, and algorithms.

This project explores the application of some of those algorithms - facial recognition and expression detection algorithms - in an attempt to inject affect into the computer, something thought to be "uncomputable". Not with the aim of disproving the premise, but to revel in the abstracted imperfections of the underlying subverted logic. In this real-time interactive generative artwork, the viewer's face and expressions become its source of chance and randomness.*

In Darwin's own words from 'Expression', one can feel his wonder: "To discover how such habits had been acquired was perplexing in no small degree. The whole subject had to be viewed under a new aspect, and each expression demanded a rational explanation. This belief led me to attempt the present work, however imperfectly it may have been executed."
