STRONG HAIR is a collection of 100 looping portraits which merges the diversity and power of African hair with the blockchain. In Ethiopia, hairstyles are sculptures full of meaning. Sometimes just by looking at someone, you can identify their nation or tribe. Hair can be a social signal and a status symbol. Many of our local hairstyles are disappearing. When we lose a hairstyle, we lose a visual language that may never be repeated again. Thousands of years of culture has created these looks.

On her journey, Bekelu wears a leather baby carrier, a traditional accessory embraced by Ethiopians throughout history and modern times. It serves a dual purpose; it cradles the child securely, while also liberating the mother's hands, enabling her to fulfill her daily responsibilities. The accompanying umbrella shields both mother and child from the intense sun, a loyal companion whether they are on their way to a community gathering, church, water source, or any other destinations their paths may lead them.

Every culture in the world holds their own creation story. Where we came from, where we are going, and what defines good and evil. In Ethiopia, instead of Adam and Eve, it's Adam and Hewan. We reimagined the Genesis narrative, envisioning Africa as the birthplace of humanity. 

Yatreda's latest project, "Adam and Hewan", encompasses 13 video loop artworks. This project draws inspiration from the age-old tale of Adam and Hewan, reimagined through the modern and innovative perspective of the collective. This collection seamlessly follows the collective's previous successful series such as "Strong Hair", "Movement of the Ancestors", and "Kingdoms of Ethiopia".

One attendant carefully adjusts the intricate pendant medallion hanging from her neck, ensuring every detail projects her royal stature. Behind her, a second attendant holds the queen’s crown with reverence. Evoking the storied legacy of Ethiopia's great kings and queens, her attire and adornment harmoniously blend elegance and authority, manifesting wealth, power, and status. These attributes are essential for maintaining the respect and loyalty of the various kingdoms and political alliances she governs and interacts with.

The Royal Dressing Room

Beneath the dense canopy of a primeval forest that divides her realms and blurs the line between history and legend, the Abyssinian queen journeys from one kingdom to another in historic Abyssinia, carried with solemn grace by her devoted attendants. She sits upon a throne of fresh grass, a symbol of fertility and renewal. Regally adorned in fine attire and traditional jewelry, the queen embodies a storied lineage.

As she travels between regions, she is honored and safeguarded by her entourage. Vigilant guards flank her, serving not only as protectors during diplomatic missions but also as key figures in cultural ceremonies and processions. Alongside them, loyal female interpreters bridge communication between Abyssinian peoples and kingdoms.

Come immerse yourself in the rich cultural tradition of the Ethiopian coffee ceremony as part of House of Yatreda, the multi-sensory and multi-spatial experience created by TMA's 2024 Digital Artist in Residence, Yatreda: ያጥሬዳ. This unique experience juxtaposes Ethiopia's communal, reflective coffee rituals against America's fast-paced, consumer-driven culture. Presented through Yatreda's artistic lens and featuring three key characters— The Coffee Muse, the Musician, and the Storyteller—the ceremony will be performed three times during the exhibition run of Ethiopia at the Crossroads (Aug. 17 - Nov. 10). Join us to slow down, reflect, and connect with others in a shared ritual that fosters a sense of community, echoing the warmth and togetherness of an Ethiopian coffee gathering.

Sensory Guide: Please note that this performance includes elements that may be overstimulating for individuals. Frankincense will be burned throughout the program emitting smoke and fragrance. We advise caution for those who may have a respiratory condition or an allergy to frankincense or incense. The herb, rue, will also be an element within the space. Additionally, a masenqo (a single-stringed instrument) will be played for the duration of the performance.

House of Yatreda: Coffee Ceremony

𝐀𝐛𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧 is Yatreda’s first museum presentation and is a big moment in our journey.

My sister and I were inspired by the oral history from our childhood growing up in the Ethiopian countryside. A folktale we heard as kids became a sketch. That sketch became a production with historical artifacts with handcrafted props created by our family collective. The production became a series of final motion portrait artworks.

The Abyssinian Queen, played by our cousin Yayu, is not based on a specific historical person, but is brought to life by gathering together collective memory across Ethiopia’s rich history. She is on a journey from one kingdom to another, traveling through the mystical forest in between borders. She is carried on a throne of fresh grass, which is a symbol of fertility and renewal in Ethiopia. It is about our grand past but also our potential for future rebirth.

Abyssinian Queen is featured as part of our 𝐻𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑌𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑎 installation at the Toledo Museum of Art, brought to life during our residency this year.

Just this afternoon, I took a final walk through the 𝐸𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑎 𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑠 exhibition in the Toledo Museum of Art. Everything was hung, and lighting was being finalized. I walked past ancient artworks from my country: crosses, manuscripts, and other historical artifacts, some of which are 1700 years old. Then, there is the section of living history, which are artworks produced by living Ethiopian artists. It fills us with speechless joy to be placed in this historical context between past and present. I want to give all my love to the entire team at the Toledo Museum of Art who valued my country and our unique place at the crossroads of the world.
