[EN] On October 30, 2022, Lula becomes President of the Republic of Brazil for the third time, beating Jair Bolsonaro in a close election — where the State machine was made to serve then president Bolsonaro to prevent the population from exercising their democratic right to vote — 4 years after being arrested without evidence in a process full of legal vices led by a corrupt judge and prevented from being elected. Thus, after more than 6 years and after irreversible damage to the fragile Brazilian democratic fabric, the coup that removed Dilma Rousseff from the presidency of the country in 2016 is finally reversed.

Beauty today is a paradox. The cult of beauty is ubiquitous but it has lost its transcendence and become little more than an aspect of consumerism — the aesthetic dimension of capitalism. The sublime and unsettling aspects of beauty have given way to corporeal(?) pleasures, instant gratification and 'likes', resulting in a kind of 'pornography' of beauty.

Here I trace a parallel to creation in the information age: we have imported to web3 dynamics the slavery of our own competition for attention in the World Wild Web. Artists creating to please. Impact over depth. Instinct over reflection. Wow over hmm. Sequential drops over paced, thoughtful creation.

With this performance art act I aim to denounce this collective craving by laying bare over my own body the pointlessness of the quest for maximum performance, in a self-plea to make peace with destruction, failure and negativity, with the demons in our mirrors, towards thoughtful understanding of who we are and what our place is.

These are aspects that must be embraced if humanity is to escape the stupor that comes as a side effect of the digital age and keep evolving with full consciousness of the directions we're taking. Or yield to the inevitable rational superiority of the AI.

100 NUDE Shoots (of Hugo) is a photographic project, started 2015, where I'm collaborating over my lifespan with 100 different photographers in the creation of 100 different nude photoshoots, each with its own unique concept, view and interpretation of how can the nude compose and mean in imagemaking.

I started this project not as a solo photographer but as the performer-model in collaboration with other artists, in order to "unite" so many different contemporary views and concepts about nudity and, perhaps, help blur the lines that still distinguish, when the human body is portrayed, fine art from amateur, fashion from erotic, artistic from pornographic. In this process I mean to convey that being nude is being human, and the actions and the art we make with it should not need excuses or be subject to censorship.

In “to Bully a Nation”, I begin with a celebration of freedom, expression, and national pride, evoking Brazil’s cultural exuberance and reflecting a liberated self by dancing joyously to the rhythm of a traditional carnival song, resonating with the collective joy Brazilians find in their identity and sovereignty. “Oh make way, for I want to pass!”. 

This joy is abruptly disrupted when the 𝕏 logo is suddenly painted over my body in violent strokes. Each mark strips away the colors the original colors, until the I’m fully engulfed in dark paint. The lively, celebratory spirit is smothered, leaving behind a figure overcome by the forces of suppression and control.

This performance draws on recent events in Brazil, where the judicial decision to block 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) sparked debates on sovereignty, freedom, and censorship. The work critiques the ways in which external powers — embodied by Elon Musk’s selective compliance with judicial orders — attempt to impose their will on sovereign nations, dismissing the rule of law when convenient.

The black 𝕏 logo, repeated relentlessly, represents the suffocating influence of unchecked corporate power and the hypocrisy of those who claim to champion free speech yet comply with authoritarian regimes when it suits their agenda. Brazil’s young democracy struggles to resist against such forces, despite the nation’s majority standing firm in the defense of the rule of law. This work is a response to that struggle — a visual manifesto that denounces and challenges the erasure of identity, freedom, and self-determination.

The piece doesn’t end with oppression, however. In a deliberate act, the video is reversed, suggesting that the removal of 𝕏 from Brazil may actually bring back relief and joy after all — a breath of fresh air for the nation’s mental health.

Through this work, I seek to explore the fragile balance between joy and oppression, expression and censorship. As the communal areas of the virtual space, once vibrant and free, become a slate for imposed and manipulative narratives, the audience is invited to reflect on the broader implications of relying on centralized profit-seeking platforms, supposed to uphold freedom to speak and act but constrained to defending their own ideological agenda in a world increasingly shaped by corporate and political interests.

Corporeal silhouettes are created in performative acts where the body becomes a hetero-topic space, disruptive and expansive, evidencing that the body is not limited to being support or object of contemporary artwork, but can be body-work in art-life.

In an increasingly virtual world, the body is more than ever subject of maximum importance, and must be re-imagined if we are to discuss, from a corporeal standpoint, matters urgent to politics, ethics, identity, gender, sexuality, subjectivity.

"Upload" captures the fluidity of existence and the transmutation of form that speaks to the essence of the digital age. The figure of the artist dissolves into a cascade of movement, an ethereal presence ascending from the earthy, time-worn tiles of a roof towards the expanse of the open sky, embodying the concept of uploading consciousness, a poignant metaphor for the transference of human identity and spirit into the boundless realm of Ethereum. As the figure dematerializes, it resonates with the process of transformation inherent in the minting of an NFT, the artist existing simultaneously in the physical and digital worlds, yet bound to neither.

The long exposure photograph, once a fixed (although extended) moment in time, becomes a perennial entity through Ethereum.
