Another therapy session.  

We talked about all the ways I've tried to make the pain go away; to make me go away. She was asking me questions about the future and I was giving her my usual replies like coating pills in honey and trying to sound less bitter. I was in the middle of a sentence, making a halfhearted survival plan when her eyes widened.  

“What did you just say?” she asked, a slight smile beginning to form on her cheeks.  

I couldn't remember. I was hardly paying attention to myself.  

“You said 'when I grow up' just now,” she said with a mix of satisfaction and joy.  

Did I? I didn't mean to use those words in particular.  

“Is that not normal?” I ask, already beginning to see where her excitement came from.  

“You've never once said that,” she replies, “I've been keeping track. You've been coming to see me for over a year and you've never used the word 'when' while referring to your future self.”  

She told me that we could end the session and talk about whatever I wanted for the rest of the hour. I had always used the word “if” when she'd ask me questions about my future. Until she pointed out the change, I had never even realized it was something that I did. She taught me about small, subconscious progress and the painfully slow road to coping. To someone who hasn't struggled with severe depression or suicide, this may seem insignificant... but to know that somewhere in the swirling darkness of my mind, there is hope for a future that I was certain had vanished is a monumental victory that I will cherish forever.  

These two images were made to represent the polarizing emotions attached to these two subconscious lines of thought:  

“WHEN I grow up.”  

“IF I grow up.”  

Maybe it was a choice I could make all along. And maybe someday that choice won't be so hard anymore.

LINGERING

An endless expanse of ancient ice.

I wonder what memories are trapped in these layers of history? What record of humankind is preserved? Civilization, evolution, renaissance... eons passing by in the blink of an eye. For every melt there was a freeze, the land giving way to walls of ice that carved mountains as it passed by. Below the ice, lava boils in anticipation.

This photo is my artistic compliment to Salt and Dust. In Iceland, the "land of fire and ice", there is a balance of destruction and regeneration. There is a give and take between the violence and the tranquility. The chaos and the calm exist in perfect unison, shown in these images.

"Home" (Norwegian)

Captured in Norway many years ago, this was one of the first images I ever took that made me feel like I could really pursue a career in art. I had taken thousands of images before this one, but something about it has stuck with me all these years. It serves as a reminder to me that no matter what point greatness finds you in your journey, that feeling can far outlast the failures in between.

Captured in the northern Yukon, three seasons can be seen in this single image. 

Once upon a time this photo went viral on Reddit and several other platforms, receiving thousands of comments arguing about whether or not Photoshop was used to create the unique scene. 

The truth is that I don't composite any of my work and this is a single image, shot with a massive telephoto lens from halfway up a neighboring mountain. Taken just on the cusp of winter, a lone tamarack larch sits abnormally high on the ridge of evergreens. While an incoming snowstorm can be seen coating the distant trees with fresh powder, the flurries had not yet reached the smaller mountain in the foreground. Mere moments after taking the shot, the whole landscape was covered in snow.

The mighty Preikestolen, a 600 meter drop into a fjord in southwestern Norway. I relate this photo to my battle with depression over the last 12 years. There are moments in my life when there is no escape from the darkness in my mind, and even standing "on top of the world" still feels like gazing into an inescapable abyss. On the edge of destruction, staring death in the face and making the choice every day to step back from the ledge and keep fighting is my reality, echoed in this photo.

For a few moments the sun broke from the arms of the gods, bursting through the violent skies and turning the hail around us into soft, shimmering snowflakes. Failure is never easy, but there is solace to be found in the pursuit of beauty that reminds us to seek out the most wondrous things in the harshest conditions. This photo, taken just after our decision was made to abandon our quest for the summit, embodies what I love about both photography and mountaineering: The glory of the journey.

Beautiful minds and bleeding hearts is all we have to offer one another. A gift and a curse, blurring the lines between the demons we battle and the ones we befriend. The heaviest burden is the one we carry inside our chests, laced with love and ready for war. Lungs lit with hope and smoke and all the words we never said, killing our youth in search of who we are. We bear this weight like an anvil, seeking the brightest stars in the darkest skies but barely able to lift our eyes to the light above us. Weren’t we going to change the world? Maybe we never stood a chance, but at least these lucid dreams keep us safe for now. You are the only light left in my eyes, and in this dream, we are immortal to all that we have made. Our souls roar like lions and echo through the ears of the demons we left behind. Life’s a mess, but we must survive.

A stunning display of power from the mighty Strákur frá Vatnsleysu. With a coat of splashed white and piercing blue eyes, Strákur is the product of many generations of perfect breeding. Son of the famous Glampi frá Vatnsleysu, Strákur is a massive stallion who refuses to go unseen. Raised in the rugged Westfjords of Iceland, he could be found galloping down the volcanic beaches or basking in slivers of golden light that broke through the clouds. Although he no longer resides in Iceland, the coastline still remembers the thunder of his hooves and the Atlantic still yearns for the depth of his eyes. What a gift we have been given to be able to witness such beasts, and to share this land with them. In the Land of Fire & Ice, Strákur frá Vatnsleysu is a name held in folklore and respected by all. Prize of the Vatnsleysa line, Strákur will never be forgotten by the lands that raised him.
