Natural reflections in landscapes are among my favourite subjects to photograph. There is something magical about the great sense of peace and calm that comes with it. In the mountains, they usually occur in the early morning or late evening, before the winds have a chance to pick up. It represents the Earth's yin and yang to me. You might get lucky and catch a perfectly glassy lake in the middle of the day, as we did on this trip to Waterton Lakes National Park.

Waterton Lakes is a notoriously windy place. Nestled between the mountains on the border of Alberta and Montana, strong gusts rip up the valley constantly. In the five days we were there, we had roughly a two-hour window of stillness. We had gone out for a hike that morning and were making our way back to the campsite. As we passed the lake, to my surprise, the entire surface looked like a pane of glass. For a brief moment in time, the gales had been put on pause, and there was tranquility. I rushed to the shore with my camera in hand because I couldn't miss this opportunity. Nothing is perfect, but this scene may have come close.

The iconic Prince of Wales Hotel is perched on top of a grassy knoll, with snow-capped mountains towering behind it, a bright blue sky, and a perfect mirror image in the water below. The crispest reflection I have seen in such a large body of water in all my years of photographing landscapes. An incredibly rare and serene moment which has etched itself into my mind as if it were yesterday.

Nature's Mirror

Camping under a clear night sky in the backcountry is one of my favorite things to do. Getting away from the light pollution of the city and seeing billions of stars shining in the sky is something I think everyone should witness at least once.

I camp a lot less in the winter than I do in the summer. Everything's a lot harder and you need more gear. However, every time I have gone out in the winter, it has been a truly magical experience. Sound gets muffled by the snow and there's not much wildlife or people around. It invokes a serious sense of calm and peacefulness.

This shot is composed of two parts. The snow covered trees were photographed in the blue hour during my first backcountry ski experience with some good friends. We slept in a snow cave we built. By the morning it had almost collapsed and my sleeping bag was soaked from the condensation. Nonetheless, it was a night I will never forget. The aurora in this photograph was taken on a different evening. It was one of the first dates with my girlfriend and we were lucky enough to witness the magic of a huge solar storm. The green lights danced across the sky for hours. Their beauty was intoxicating. Talk about an unforgettable date. 

This piece reminds me to never stop creating. Creating is the thing I love to do above anything else. When I'm out shooting with my camera, it's almost as if I'm in a meditative state. The whole world around me melts away and all that's left is my camera and I.

Tupper

Nothing is certain. Sometimes you have to dig deep to find out what it is you genuinely want out of this life. I have taken the easy path for too long. My fear of failure and self doubt have been holding me back from achieving my full potential. Ever since I discovered photography I knew it was the passion I truly wanted to pursue. I've finally put all my chips on the table and have gone all in. There is no backup plan. The unknown still scares me, but my heart tells me this is the right decision. My old self is gone. Like blooming flowers after a warm spring rain, this marks a new beginning for me. For the first time in a long time I'm excited for what the future has in store.

The Unknown

Skiing and landscape photography are two of my biggest passions in life. This piece encompasses both of those pursuits perfectly. I have spent the past nine Winters of my life chasing snow and mountains. The humbling feeling you get while out there is second to none. There is not much more satisfying to me than to carve a turn through a blank canvas of snow. I carry my camera with me on almost every single adventure I go on. Sometimes it doesn't even leave my bag. Just the chance of an amazing moment in time that I can capture makes me bring it along. I don't know if I'll ever get conditions like this again anytime soon. It truly felt like we were skiing through a Winter dreamland into the setting sun.

Skiing in Dreamland

To be "On Cloud Nine" is to be in a state of blissful euphoria.

My breath hung in the crisp air as I took a deep exhale halfway up the ridge to the summit. It had been a brisk start to the day. However, we had climbed above the clouds and the sun was now beaming down on us. Its warmth felt pleasant on my frosty face. 

We continued our ascent, delicately manoeuvring through snow and rocks on the wind affected ridge. My backpack, with skis strapped to it, was starting to feel heavy as we approached the summit. 

Stepping onto the peak, I felt on top of the world.  

I stared out in wonder at an ocean of clouds, taking in the beauty. Prominent jagged peaks towered over the other side of the valley and  there were mountains as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but feel small. 

After a short and hair raising traverse, we reached our objective. The avalanche rating was considerable that day. With a thorough assessment and a group decision, we decided to go for it. 

Peering over the edge, I watched my friend descend the length of the couloir. Waiting and filled with nervous excitement, my radio crackled as he gave me the all clear.

I dropped in and everything else faded away. 

Incredibly humbled and at the mercy of the mountains, hoping they would be good to me that day. 

Moments like these are what I have been chasing for the past ten years. They require complete focus as one mistake could end it all. The feeling of euphoria I get from skiing big lines far outweighs the risks and it's when I feel truly alive. It leaves me on cloud nine. 

On Cloud Nine

Standing in the crisp winter air at daybreak, I gazed out at the scene in front of me. A perfectly placed stretch of railroad, winding along the river, with an epic mountain backdrop. There was a fresh blanket of snow covering the trees, and the golden morning glow was casting beautiful soft light and shadows across the landscape.

I had the whole place to myself that morning, which is a rarity on its own. I thought back to the first photographer to capture it on film, Nicholas Morant, whom the location is aptly named after. How photographers like him paved the way and inspired thousands of people after them to follow in their footsteps. The years have gone by, but that same passion burns in our veins. The passion to create and to share those creations with the world.

Even if a spot has been photographed thousands of times before, it has never been photographed by you, and everyone's vision is slightly different. Using a slower shutter speed, I was able to capture the motion of the train, giving it the illusion of movement through the frame. I love the challenge of creating something unique in a well-known place.

Morant's Curve is as iconically Canadian as it gets. The trains making their way through the mountains here were revolutionary for Canada and are still an integral part of our transportation to this day. No matter how many times I see the trains steaming down this route, I will never grow tired of it. It will forever hold a special place in my heart and is a must-stop location if I'm ever passing by.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the night sky. Growing up, I remember looking at the craters of the moon through my telescope or waking up at two AM just to watch a meteor shower. I could spend hours staring at the stars, pondering the meaning of life.

On a climbing trip through Utah, we made an evening pit stop at these red cliffs on the recommendation of a friend. It was a calm autumn evening. The crowds that visit the nearby Zion National Park were non-existent here. There was one other family on their way back to the parking lot, leaving us with the whole place to ourselves. We spent a few hours scrambling around the red sandstone formations at dusk waiting for the stars to come out. When night finally came, I turned into that child again, entranced by the milky way galaxy above. Wondering if there is someone else out there, on another planet, just as amazed as me. 

This piece reminds me of how small my role in the universe really is. We are sitting on a giant rock, hurtling through space at 67,000 miles per hour. The big bang happened an estimated, 13.7 billion years ago. Our lifetime is a small fraction, of a second, when we look at the big picture. Always make the most of the fleeting time you are given, you only get one shot.

Constellation Cliffs

Stratosphere is the second volume to my genesis collection. A continuation of some of my favorite work to date. 

The Stratosphere is the second layer of the atmosphere.  It contains the ozone layer, which absorbs the majority of the Sun's UV radiation. This is a vital function and life as we know it couldn't exist without it. I am forever grateful to be living on this planet during this time. It brings me great joy to be able to capture the beauty I get to experience and to share it with the world.  

This collection is also a metaphor for my journey as a photographer and artist. Just like a rocket leaving earth, my motivation and creativity are taking flight. The possibilities are endless, and this is just the beginning.

Mount Tilley is situated west of the Columbia River and Upper Arrow Lake near Revelstoke, British Columbia. It was named for Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley (1818–1896), a Canadian politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation.

Tilley

As long as I can remember I have always loved mountains. Whether it's playing among them or admiring them from afar, I've never seen a mountain I didn't find magical. I want to bring my admiration for mountains to you in the way I experienced them that day. As if you were there.

This collection has formed over the last 5 years and will continue to grow until it has 100 pieces.

A percentage of sales will be used to fund my Outdoor Initiative, a project motivating others to get outside.

Let's Move Mountains

The open road has been calling my name for a while and it's finally time to take the plunge. This photograph has so much meaning to me. It represents freedom, following your dreams and never giving up. As far as we know you only get one shot at this life, I'm going to make it count. In May of 2022 I will be taking a leap of faith. I am committing to becoming a full time photographer and NFT artist. I will be exploring this beautiful country I call home from coast to coast in a travel trailer. My intent is not only to grow as an artist and human, but to share the things I get to experience with the world. Come join me on my journey, the possibilities will be endless.

Do you ever look up at the night sky and ponder the meaning of life? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? These are questions I ask myself a lot. Sitting there looking up at the Milky Way Galaxy I wonder if there is someone else out there staring back at me. Maybe they are asking themselves the same questions. I Wish I could hop on a lightspeed spaceship, hit the hyperdrive and explore the final frontier. Perhaps then I will find the answers I am looking for.

Embrace the Chaos

Fall is in the air. So we are reminded here in the Northern Hemisphere. The mornings are crisp and the leaves have exchanged their regular green coats, to splendid hues of yellow, orange and red. The mountains are getting their first dusting of snow, leaving them with a spectacular blanket of the most brilliant shades of white. A flock of geese flies overhead, making the long journey south. 

I love this time of year.

The smell of my grandfather's pipe tobacco, the crackling of the first fire in the wood stove. Dusting off the boots, sweaters and toques that I've had in the closet since spring. Hearty meals and comfort food. Pumpkin pies, farmer's markets and the warm aroma of cinnamon wafting from a local coffee shop.

I love this time of year. 

Jumping into a pile of leaves, pretending I'm a kid again.  Cool breezes on bike rides, backyard fire pits with friends, leaves crunching under my feet on hikes. Cozy nights in with the family, Halloween and the fact that winter is just around the corner. There is no season quite like Autumn to appreciate and enjoy the little things in life.

I love this time of year.

Seasons of Change

The Raven came to a  world covered in darkness, where men and women lived in dark and cold. The Raven felt bad for the people living in the dark and resolved to search for the light. The Raven flew across mountains, rivers, and valleys until finally, he saw light. The Sun was shining brilliantly, but it was tucked away in a valley where nobody else could reach it. The Raven used his power of flight  and pulled the Sun high into the sky, over to the land of darkness. The Raven threw the Sun into the sky, where it stayed filling the
Earth with a dazzling bright light. From then on out the World below would no longer be covered in darkness. The mountains, rivers, forest, lakes and rivers would feel the warmth of the Sun every day, living in it's warm embrace. Some say he can still be seen, admiring the fruits of his labour in the early morning hours. Sitting down by the water, staring up at the heavens shrouded in mist.
