Welcome to the Land of Stone, the harsh desolate landscape is filled with coldness and jagged slate slabs. Nothing lives here, nothing moves.

Any heat is pulled through the thin atmosphere and lost into space, the sun never rises, nighttime never ends. The only indication of time is when watching the stars transition across the cold sky.

This is a shot from my favorite valley in New Zealand, there have been nights when I've felt quite similar to the fantasy piece of writing above, feeling like the sun will never rise again.

Land of Stone

Unveiling "Questions," my portrayal of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex set against a secluded mountain range in New Zealand. The title draws inspiration from the image's question mark-like structure, but it also holds a deeper significance to me.

Long nights spent observing the heavens inevitably invoke existential inquiries. What forms of life, if any, exist beyond our planet? How can we fathom the immensity of the universe?

This scene was documented on New Year's Eve 2019, nestled within a remote valley in Canterbury, New Zealand. Despite the rugged landscape and volatile climate that make this valley a challenging destination, I find myself repeatedly drawn to its beauty. The difficulty of the journey, which includes multiple river crossings and extreme weather conditions, only heightens its appeal.

This photograph holds a special place in my heart. It was not only shortlisted for the esteemed Royal Museums Greenwich astrophotography competition, but it was also featured in an article I contributed to for BBC Sky at Night magazine.

In that piece, I delved into my experience with LRGB editing—a process that combines luminance, red, green, and blue. This powerful technique uncovers hidden details within raw data, enabling the construction of a vivid and intricate image.

Emphasizing the scene is the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region nestled some 1,500 light years away within the Milky Way. Its distinctive red glow is primarily the result of hydrogen alpha emission. When energy-charged particles collide with the cloud's hydrogen atoms, they excite the electrons. As these electrons revert to their normal state, they release light, largely in the red spectrum—an indicator of the ongoing stellar birth within the complex.

This is not an ordinary photograph!

When I set out for an astrophotography expedition on this night it was totally clear, I drove a couple of hours to the location I had in mind only to be met with fog and a bit of a breeze.

I quickly packed up and traveled to spot number two, a few bays and hills over and was greeted with clear skies. By then the Milky Way core and Mars was a bit higher than I had anticipated so I proceeded to set up my equatorial tracking mount and photography equipment as fast as possible and started imaging the sky. 

The clarity and sharpness of this image is phenomenal.

Diffused

Light from a billion stars, colossal balls of plasma, greedily burning away their nuclear fuel in a faraway sector of the galaxy.  
Intergalactic dust lanes, vast molecular clouds of cold interstellar gasses and dust block the light from the stars behind them creating beautiful patterns and textures.


It's mind-blowing to think of, to try and visualize the sheer size of it all.  
To comprehend the incomprehensible.


It took this starlight approximately 28,000 years to reach my camera sensor and be converted into a digital signal which you're now looking at on your device!

Star Masters

At below-freezing temperatures (-8°C) this is one of the clearest skies I had ever been under, the lake was frozen over and there was a strange silence in the atmosphere, standing alone under the vastness of the stars in this frozen landscape was a really deep experience, especially after a near-death scare.

While I was making my way to the edge of another lake before I arrived at this one, I fell through the ice, into the murky water, my camera bag and mechanical panorama head were submerged and my waders started filling up with water, I thought I was done for, luckily I managed to pull myself out using flax grass.

My equipment was dry inside the bags, I changed into some dry clothes and continued with the adventures that night.

What an experience!

SilΞnt Night

Monumental

This is a beautiful and enchanting valley that captivates my senses and emotions. 

I have visited it many times, despite the challenges of its rough terrain and unpredictable weather, which have sometimes left me stranded.  
Despite these difficulties, there is a strange and irresistible attraction that draws me back to this place. Even though I feel small and insignificant compared to the vast and mysterious landscape and sky around me, I am always filled with a sense of wonder and awe. 

This valley is full of secrets and beauty that keep me coming back for more.

The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex in all its glory.

I had a vision for an image like this for a few years but had a lot of learning to do before I could achieve it, the conditions also needed to be perfect. The weather, star alignment, and the location.

This image was shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Museums Greenwich Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.

An article was published in the “BBC Sky at Night Magazine” alongside an in-depth and technical article I wrote on how this image was created.

Standing under the night sky for long periods of time gets me thinking, thinking about existential questions. Like if there's life out there? How do we comprehend the incomprehensible vastness and scale of the universe? I never have the answers but it's nice knowing I'm capturing photons that have travelled lightyears to reach my camera sensor.

Perched on mountain peaks or tucked-in valleys, nothing quite compares to the feeling of everything melting away around you when you stand amongst the stars, battling the elements chasing the perfect shot.

We often look to the stars when we need inspiration in life, a reminder that our troubles can be an insignificant speck of dust in this vast galaxy.

Into the Night.

I want to do something different and give a chance to all collectors to grab this, by having the price on this as low as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I highly value my work but I just want to change it up for just one NFT.

This was shot at the beach near my home, with a slow shutter speed to give a smooth effect, the sunset was epic!

I selected this image because I didn't have to hike up a mountain for it!

Foundation

This photo "The Peak," holds a unique spot in my portfolio and is what I believe to be the first astro image taken from the top of Peak Hill, New Zealand. This is more than just a photograph to me, it's the image that gave me the confidence to tackle intense hikes like this.

Within this panorama, not only can we see the Milky Way rising, but we can see two objects which can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere - the Eta Carina Nebula makes its appearance at the top center, with the Large Magellanic Cloud to the right and waves of airglow gracing the horizon. Airglow occurs when atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, excited by sunlight, emit light to shed their excess energy.

Getting this image wasn't straightforward. The aim was to scale Peak Hill with all my heavy astrophotography equipment and then capture panoramic night views. Shortly into the hike, the burden of the 27kg bag hit me. The trail was steep and demanding, but the excitement and vision of the shot kept me going.

On arrival at the top, the wind started blasting me. For precise long exposure shots, a calm environment is crucial. On my third try at this multi-row panorama, the wind dropped off and I had a 40-minute window of stillness.

The creation of this photo spanned 4 hours of driving, 5 hours of hiking, 7 hours on the hill, and another 8 meticulously editing and piecing everything together.

"The Peak" isn’t just about the epic visual appeal; it captures passion, accuracy, and a bit of self-created luck. It's a reflection of my journey. This is a standout piece of mine, now available as a 1/1 for someone who resonates with its essence. I hope you can experience a sense of connection to it, similar to what I feel.

This photo was made from 40 images stitched together, resulting in an ultra-high-resolution image.

The Peak

"Starfield" encapsulates the beauty of night skies from an epic location I've admired over the years, in ultra-high res!

Hawdon Shelter in Arthur's Pass, New Zealand, is not just a photography spot for me; it's my escape. Tucked away in nature, it's where I disconnect from everyday life, this peaceful environment always resets me, and I come back feeling refreshed.

Having visited countless times, it's one of my favourite locations. Protected from the typical mountain winds by the surrounding native beech forest, it's a perfect spot for astrophotography and setting up camp for the night.

This NFT is 315-megapixel, 240mb and huge resolution! Futureproofed for UHD screens.

In a slight change from my usual methods, I used an 85mm lens, capturing over 60 frames that I stitched together and combined. This approach enhanced the details of the night sky. The time and effort invested in capturing and processing were certainly justified, especially when the Aurora Australis unexpectedly appeared in my panorama. If you zoom in you can spot various satellite trails, highlighting the activity in our night sky. 

My H.Alpha astro-modified camera was important for capturing the vivid colours of nebulae within the Milky Way, enriching the red and magenta hues.

The panorama captures different views: the left shows the southern sky, the centre showcases the west, and the right side displays the north. A huge field of view.

This piece was taken recently, on the 5th of October 2023.

I feel I have finally done justice to one of my favourite locations, and I'm very happy to share this with the world.

This video was meticulously crafted by isolating sections of the original image and transforming them into a captivating motion video. 
It is my interpretation of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, set against the serene backdrop of a secluded mountain range in New Zealand.
