Reaction diffusion systems are mathematical representations of the behaviours of fluids that can be found in nature. A key characteristic of these systems is that the initial parameters are simple but the resulting process can be extremely complex. In LandWaves, pixel colours affect each other, line by line, from top to bottom. Frequencies of multiple oscillating sound waves are turning the brightness values of these pixels into sonic materia. 

This piece started as an experimentation in gallery spaces, then transformed over several different digital ecosystems, questioning their hyper-capitalist nature and mediated affordance.

2. Hold the lines loosely in your hands, shake them briefly, and then toss them, all the while contemplating your query. The line you record is determined by assigning numerical values to heads and tails, then adding the total. 

3. Collect the lines and toss another n times, recording the numerical values and the corresponding line each time, building your n+1-line hexagram from the bottom up.

A balanced combination of spatial subdivision and algorithm sonification. A subdivision surface algorithm is recursive in nature: the process starts with a base level of area, and a refinement scheme is then applied to this field. This process takes that element and subdivides it, creating new segmented areas. The positions of the new areas are computed based on the positions of nearby old fields, edges, and/or faces. A cellular automata is running on the texture of some of these areas, building continuous, tautological worlds of binary patterns and relationships. Thus, unfolding of a pixel’s ‘umwelt’ can be witnessed through the slow, contemplative process.

The audio synthesis consists of a stochastic melody that emerges along the division of the new areas and territories within the image structure. This melody is complemented with tiny micro sounds, triggered by each new generation of the surface mounted cellular automata.

A Cellular Dice Piece

Computational modeling is the use of computers to simulate and study complex systems using mathematics, physics and computer science. A computational model contains numerous variables that characterize the system being studied. Simulation is done by adjusting the variables alone or in combination and observing the outcomes. Computer modeling allows scientists to conduct thousands of simulated experiments by computer. The thousands of computer experiments identify the handful of laboratory experiments that are most likely to solve the problem being studied.

Today's sociocultural discourse might obscure the fact that humanity has been using artificial modeling techniques since ancient times. Permutations, calculus, algorithms are not exclusive to our time, but these are ubiquituous methods that can be found in many cultural entities where members of the community progress and develop their environment through cooperative decisions and consensus. Since computers were not available in the past, calculation methods, application of chance, randomness and probability were performed using other methods, like dices, sticks, cards, weather, rituals or other manifestations.

Dice are small, throwable objects with marked sides that can rest in multiple positions. They are used for generating random numbers, commonly as part of tabletop games, including dice games, board games, role-playing games, and games of chance. A traditional die is a cube with each of its six faces marked with a different number of dots (pips) from one to six. When thrown or rolled, the die comes to rest showing a random integer from one to six on its upper surface, with each value being equally likely. These tools were often used when a decision required to outsource human subjective elements into an objective environment.

Divination can be seen as a systematic method with which to organize what appears to be disjointed, random facets of existence such that they provide insight into a problem at hand. If a distinction is to be made between divination and fortune-telling, divination has a more formal or ritualistic element and often contains a more social character, usually in a religious context, as seen in traditional African medicine. Divination has long been criticized. In the modern era, it has been dismissed by the scientific community and skeptics as being superstitious; experiments do not support the idea that divination techniques can actually predict the future more reliably or precisely than would be possible without it.

This idea is especially adaptable to the data driven belief systems of our time, where human decision making involves trust in omnipresent although obscure and biased artificial intelligence, esoteric pattern analysis, DIY heuristics, magic numbers among others.

'Self-organization' → the process by which individuals organize their communal behaviour to create global order by interactions amongst themselves rather than through external intervention or instruction.

'Future-jazz-geometry' → propulsive syncopated visual rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, varying degrees of improvisation, and often deliberate distortions of pitch and timbre.

'Like-minded' → sharing the same opinions, ideas, or interests. 

'Pixel' → the smallest addressable element in an all points addressable display device; so it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen.

'Neighbourhood' → a spatial unit, in which face-to-face social interactions occur.

Estimation (or estimating) is the process of finding an estimate or approximation, which is a value that is usable for some purpose even if input data may be incomplete, uncertain, or unstable. The value is nonetheless usable because it is derived from the best information available. Typically, estimation involves "using the value of a statistic derived from a sample to estimate the value of a corresponding population parameter".

Metapoetry.

Following the traditions of concrete poetry, cut-up methodology, typewriter art and conceptual experiments, this piece is transforming metadata of generative token #22568 into visual poetry. The image structure is built from a randomly selected iteration of “L-Template” by reading the available drawing instructions from its features and combining them with the name of its owner.

The arrangement of the letters is based on this formula. This rule also becomes the title of the rendered piece, which can be seen on the bottom of the scene. The titles are supplemented with the names of the collectors, who become co-authors of the final composition. Where there is no registered fx-hash user name for the selected token, “anonymous collector” will be displayed instead as the author. 

Being an artwork that is built on the features of another token, L-Poem intends to be a meta-token, a quasi-tautological, entangled entity whose existence is ensured by the immutable ledger environment.

‘tur1ng’ consists of audible image architectures based on the principle of Turing machines. These systems are mathematical models of computation that manipulate symbols on a strip of tape according to a table of rules. The machine first writes a symbol in a cell on the tape, then either moves the tape one cell left or right, then, based on the observed symbol and the machine's own state in the table, either proceeds to another instruction or halts computation.

In ‘tur1ng’, rules are stored as colors and the original tape cells are constructed from a two dimensional array. The sound unfolds as the algorithm proceeds: monitoring these binary songs requires being attentive to changes in the state or behavior of the system over time so that appropriate interventions or other process-related activities may be carried out. Another feature of listening algorithms is that it often has to be done as a background or secondary task or, perhaps, in parallel with one or more other primary tasks.

As a poetic reflection on irreversible processes of the anthropocene, ‘Solastalgia’ is a sequence of audiovisual pieces that slowly transform their colors into black and white, in parallel with their sounds, which are turning from concrete, recognizable birdsongs into static noise. While the shapes of the visual components are generated from crane migration data, the changing colors and sounds of the environment represent the directional transition of migrating birds in an abstract, decentralized space. The sequence starts with a unique 1/1 edition, followed by consecutive releases with increasing edition numbers and gradually falling prices. Solastalgia is a part of  the first European Generative Hackathon, NFT Deb; responding through data to the large-scale climatic issue and crisis of bird migration.

Solastalgia III

Solastalgia

Terrain is an audiovisual experiment halfway between a self-modifying game board and an audiovisual interface. The unfolding algorithm is stuck infinitely in the process of filling its surroundings. However, infinite growth within a constrained environment that has limited resources is impossible. 

The music is based on the steps of this never-ending game mechanic, creating a slow, continuously changing ambient soundscape. The initial structure of the board is generated with a simple L-System encoded in the token’s metadata, that is combined with a tessellation algorithm. The result is an area of regular shapes and forms, filled with vivid and contrasting colors that resembles navigational charts, philosophical games and digital cartography. 

If you collect this artwork, you will support climate positive interventions: each iteration of the piece is automatically set to donate to environmental conservation funds upon minting. m0-n0 is a realtime generative artwork, composed of deconstructed screen space. The process is based on a recursive noise function, that is altered by low-level manipulations of a fragment shader. The sound synthesis is closely related with the glitches and flaws of the unfolding image architecture. Each colour scheme activates a different set of sound generators and filter modules. The resulting composition is an audiovisual environment that slowly transforms its elements into a blend of auditive sensations and autonomous pixel configurations.

Displaying a 256 color palette directly in the unix terminal. Printing each color number using the corresponding text color. The shell script uses ANSI escape codes to set the text color for each number and arranges them in rows of 8 for clear visualization.

Challenging the screen as a stable reference frame for images. With the usage of pixel shifting, different vectors of a noise algorithm are applied on the initial pixel grids to alter their structure, resulting in the process of a continuous transition towards entropy.
