My first 1/1 mint of 2023 and a catalyst for what is to come. I now use a dedicated camera recently converted to full spectrum for infrared photography alongside my normal kit. It has opened up a whole new world to me and I am looking forward to the results from a few projects this year.  
This solitary tree is on Dartmoor National Park, a single tree which stands against all the weather the moor can throw at it.

Solitary

To create this image many factors had to coincide - a low tide, good weather and the positioning of the galactic centre. I can't remember the exact time but I know it was between 12pm and 2am when this was taken. It was one of those moments I will never forget, shared with friends all trying to avoid tidal pools and slippery rocks. St Michaels Mount in Cornwall, UK.

Orangerie

This timeless location was in the grounds of an old chateau in Normandy, France. After exploring the grounds I was drawn back to this scene. I love natural frames and I love architecture and here I had both in great measure. During the shoot I was followed by a resident Border Collie who wanted to play ball, I couldn't help but oblige. 
I look at this scene and it transports me back to happy times, good weather and an easier life.

Orangerie

The margin between land and sea blurred, the fence was my safety net, or was it ?.  The decision between my safety and the image I had in mind was tricky and despite the calmness of this scene it was anything but calm. Using a long exposure distorts reality, creating an ethereal effect on the ocean as it spllied over and into this tidal swimming pool.

Abyss

Shooting with film is seen as an antiquated process these days but I enjoy the "not knowing" and the anticipation of waiting for the results. Shot using an old Bronica SQA 6x6cm film camera and Ilford HP5 plus, a 400 speed film. Developed myself in Ilfosol 3.

The landscape takes on a different form at sunrise and sunset. Shadows, shapes and textures bring life to otherwise boring scenes. I waited until the very last moments of the day before shooting this, using a long lens to compress perspective.  
This little church sits atop a hill that was once a volcano apparently. Devon doesn't have many volcanoes that I know of !.

Lands End cliffs on a breezy evening, stood on a ledge with a drop of god knows how many metres below. It was the only vantage point to create that wide effect which creates a walk in effect - although walking into this would be a mistake !. Cornwall isnt too far from home so I am often found sitting on a cliff waiting for the right conditions - these were just right.

Sometimes you gotta get your boots dirty. Well your boots, knees and hands. And in this instance I risked the onslaught of ticks, lovely little creatures. 
The things we do for an image. 
I got down and amongst the long grasses here to create a bugs eye view of this beautiful oak tree. The infrared treatment involved a 590nm filter which gives this lovely tone.

The smell of freshly cut grass, a gentle breeze and the warmth of the sun, walking through this ornate garden was one of the highlights of my French roadtrip.  
I love the subtle pastel colours I get from my infrared camera. It transforms scenes like this into a dreamlike effect. Midday shooting has always been my least favourite time but now the IR effect has turned it into one of the best times to shoot.
