Into oblivion...

I’ve stared at this picture a long time and suddenly I remembered what it makes me think of.
"Back to the future", when the DeLorean disappears and leaves only a trail of fire. Good memories, bad accident.

It's such a strong image and I love the fact that you get the shadow of my grandfather as an added bonus.

I love how in a lot of these pictures the ‘subject’ is on the border of the frame with all attention going to the empty road or the skidmarks.

The landscape has changed dramatically in Belgium. If you would take the same picture again today, you would end up with a horizon filled with houses. Very little open space left, apart from some exceptions.

By Accident - Utility

I created this piece for the Rik Oostenbroek challenge in September 2022.  
It was more a challenge for myself discovering new ways to use tools I hadn't explored to the fullest.  
Upon request, a HiRes video file (GIF so it can loop) can be sent.

The fabricated emotions in stock photography have always fascinated me and just ask to be 'remixed'.

Back in 2004 me and my ex-girlfriend did a road trip in Argentina. It was a way of saying goodbye, a closing, a last adventure. All shot on 35mm film.

This was the southern most part we visited. Beautifully situated between the majestic mountains.  
We wanted to go further south but in the end our time was running out...

Clearly this car hit something/someone and dragged it over a small distance.
I hope it was something and not someone.

I do love the composition, the car out of frame but not quite. It makes you want to see more but as a viewer you’re left to use your imagination.
That is the power that lies in most these images.

Truckload

Same highway as in #3 but a lot earlier.
You can see there's no barriers in the middle yet.

Truck went out of control and lost it really fast.
The police officer seems to be posing or maybe he's a stand in for a possible pedestrian on the road that caused the accident (yes people would still just cross the highway back then).

Re-Enactments

This is the only photograph, that I know of, of my grandfather, Marcel De Baer, on the job.

It was taken by my mother when she joined him on a day at work.

There are other pictures but you mostly only see his shadow or deformed reflection in some chrome car bumper.

As long as I can remember, whenever he left the house, he always wore a hat and was dressed to impress.

When I started thinking about this later, when going through the archives, I knew that whatever the time or moment he was called to the job (mostly at night) he would take the time to get properly dressed, take his camera gear, his hat and head out.

He was a true gentleman.
