A golden wave forms a barrel and breaks at Ke’e Beach on the north shore of Kauai. Without a cloud in the sky for the sunset, this glassy wave captured the glow of the sun on its race to the shore.

The Honu Collection #9: Honu Roar

While it seemed like this Honu was announcing his arrival on Maui's Hookipa Beach with a roar, I'm pretty sure he was simply belching after filling up his belly on the limu seaweed before coming ashore for an afternoon nap. Honu do not have teeth but do have a serrated lower jaw, which is clearly visible in this image.

The Honu Collection is curated from almost 20 years living in Hawaii. I photographed these Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

I volunteer with several non-profits focused on education, conservation, and outreach for Hawaii’s endangered wildlife, including Mālama i nā Honu, which works with these Honu.

A portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to Mālama i nā Honu to provide resources for their conservation efforts. This helps ensure that these beautiful green sea turtles are around for future generations to experience.

I often describe my images as singular moments in time, that split-second when the shutter closes preserving a memory for future generations. Not all moments are created equal, though, and some images are special for reasons beyond the pixels captured in the frame.  

Boston in July, along the Charles River for the Independence Day celebrations, meeting friends from across my life. Chad and Michelle from high school with the two kids I’d been watching grow up, Manny from Taos with his young family recently moved to the city, Julie from the Boston Herald and Red Sox games, but most importantly, her. Annie, in my city, meeting my friends.  

We got engaged in July, in her city. A ring purchased in the diamond district together, and trying to find a quiet corner to ask formally, but without any people around. Walking in Times Square, Washington Square Park, lower Manhattan… with no people around? In the end, I slipped the ring box into my hat, and held it under the counter in Eataly, a plate of fresh mozzarella on the bar in front of us. A moment we shared together in a crowded place with no one else aware of the significance it held for us both.  

We got married in July, in our island home, on a beach in Kauai where she didn’t want to be the center of attention, even standing out in the bright Hawaii sun. The toast to thank our guests for coming, when my wife had disappeared from the room. Out on the dance floor together with family and friends celebrating the beginning of so many moments together.  

It may not have started with Boston in July, but maybe that was the moment I knew. With the fireworks exploding above the river, a flash in the corner of my eye got me to turn my head to see the show was reflected in the dark glass of the nearby skyscrapers. I leaned in to whisper in her ear, and shared the moment with her.  

For me, this image always brings back that moment, wrapping my arms around her, our heads turning together to watch the fireworks, packed into the crowd with our friends, but sharing a different perspective that made that singular moment our own.

While driving home from Kailua, I saw some powerful waves pumping at Sandy Beach Park. Mesmerized by the awesome shore break when "Sandys" is churning, I had to stop to shoot the barrels. When this wave exploded into my foreground, I was able to quickly refocus and capture the epic force of nature, a classic Sandy Beach Wave.

Usually, I prefer the wet Honu, fresh from the ocean, taking a nap on the beach. This guy had been there since 7 a.m. and when the setting sun slipped beneath the cloud layer, and bathed him in a little light, he finally started moving... further up the beach, away from the water.

In this case, I really liked the contrast of colors between him, the rocky cliff behind him, the sand, and the driftwood.

Ho'okipa Honu

Kauai’s Ke’e Beach is my favorite spot for chasing waves. The power of the waves colliding with the cliffs bounces back into the next set of incoming waves, creating these amazing, glassy fans.

As a photographer, I have been drawn to this beach for years chasing these collisions and trying to capture that singular moment of time. This image is the truly classic fan wave, with a shape that almost resembles a sea shell.

Postcards From Hawaii #14: Moloa'a Bay

On Kauai's eastern shore is a little gem called Moloa'a Bay, with a beautiful sandy beach that can often be fairly deserted even on a clear day. A pond exists on the other side of the beach, and tucking myself in on the backside, I captured the rocks and tree branches across the pond to the sweep of the beach to the point and the sea.

A bench collapse at the Kamokuna ocean entry of Kilauea within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on New Year's Eve started 2017 off with an explosive display. This lava tube was severed in the process and began dumping hundreds of millions of gallons of lava seventy-five feet into the ocean. Mixing molten lava and cool ocean water had powerful and amazingly beautiful results.

Hawaii is famous for beautiful beaches and big waves, as well as the dangerous shorebreaks that close out quickly on the reefs at the water’s edge. On a little unnamed beach on Oahu's North Shore, I found this angle to capture the color and detail of a secret wave.

In the late afternoon at Laniakea Beach on Oahu's North Shore, you can often expect to find the endangered Hawaiian green sea turtle coming ashore for a rest. This afternoon, however, I found one feasting on the shallow and slippery reef. I gingerly walked out beside her and as she kept an eye on me, I captured the wave rushing in. A few careful steps later, I was sitting beside her on the reef. Luckily (I think?), I landed on my back and managed to keep the camera from splashing into the water.

The white winter wonderland in Hawaii is just a little bit different, with a December storm bringing a North Shore swell to one of the world's most famous surf spots, the Banzai Pipeline.

A winter swell with 30’ waves crashing in at "Backdoor,” the famous hard-crashing right-hand wave breaking away from the peak of “Pipeline.” This wave barrels over a very shallow reef, making it among the most dangerous sections on the North Shore of Oahu.
