Iceland, the land of fire and ice, and has always been the unknown. On my first day in Iceland, the might of Vestrahorn was something I did not expect to see in person. 

Trying to keep everything clean and dry so that I could capture cleanly, I set out to get the dream composition; I was in another world in which a vivid fantasy was coming to life right before my eyes.

Revisiting a tranquil, solitary location to reflect and regroup has become my special ritual. The fresh ocean breeze brings clarity with each breath taken as I take in the vivid colors of nature; from mesmerizing gold beams across the horizon to dreamy shades of pink slowly rising up into view at dawn. 

To accompany this beauty is the peaceful soundscape made by the rolling ocean lapping against the cliffs - pure bliss! With every return trip comes a peace leaving me feeling refilled for moments that seem like days – all within one inspiring space where inspiration and creativity are ignited anew with every sunrise.

Cliffside Serenity

Through the open window, the ocean reveals itself, framed like a perfect snapshot. Sunlight touches the water, turning the sea into a glowing path. The surfers glide in the distance, small yet free. 

This window isn’t just an opening; it’s a portal offering a glimpse of the ocean’s endless calm, a quiet escape into the horizon.

The Morning Portal

The ocean is a place of solace. It's always been there for us, offering a refuge from the tumult of life. In the water, We are weightless and free. It's like nothing else in the world can touch us.

I love capturing those moments on camera - when the water is still, and the sun shines on it, creating a beautiful golden hue. It feels like everything is perfect for just a moment. Those are the moments that we can treasure most. They're like a reminder that everything will eventually be okay no matter what happens in life.

Halcyon Rising

The fisherman walks down to the water's edge, looking out at the orange horizon. He knows the tide is coming in and needs to get to his spot before it's too late. He's been doing this for years, becoming a daily ritual for him. He loves the peace of the early morning, and he enjoys the challenge of catching fish. He sets his rod and reel down on the ground and walks over the rocks to the water's edge. The tide is already coming in fast, but he knows what he's doing. 

He's been fishing here for years and knows all the best spots. He casts his line out into the water and begins to wait. The sun is starting to rise, getting hotter and hotter. He starts to sweat, but he doesn't mind. He's used to it. The minutes drag by, but eventually, his line starts to move. He starts to reel it in, slowly at first but then faster and faster as the fish gets closer. Finally, he reels it in and smiles with satisfaction that he has caught enough for dinner. 

This is his ritual.

The Ritual

For a long time, seeing and photographing an incandescent sunrise has been a lifelong ambition of mine. I had visited the region where I arrived numerous times during the previous two years, and I could see that the fantasy was becoming a reality as time passed.

The only thing I could do as rays of light and colour began to emerge through the blue hour was to stand there wonder at the spectacle in front of me. The sky became gradually brighter until it finally reached its full splendour; a carpet of oranges, pinks, and purples spread out before my eyes as the sky slowly brightened. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that left me speechless and gasping for air every time.

Incandescent

From high up in the sky, a majestic and awe-inspiring sight greeted my eyes. Below me was an endless expanse of beauty - snow-capped mountains that glowed with the warmth of the sun, stretching from horizon to horizon. Vast glaciers spilled down into cold and dark waters.

The scenes I witnessed were so stunning and surreal, they almost seemed to defy reality. Every aspect of the landscape had been crafted by nature; each mountain and glacier formed over thousands of years, creating something truly unique yet eerily familiar at the same time. 

It felt like I was witnessing something very special - moments are frozen in time that would never be repeated no matter how hard you tried to capture it on camera or film it for posterity’s sake. This is why aerial photography is such an important tool when it comes to capturing these kinds of scenes – because only from this perspective can we appreciate their full majesty and grandeur from up above, while at the same time, witnessing how nature can change over time.

Breakaway

It was an awe-inspiring sight – the Black Church of Budir, standing atop the rolling hills of Iceland’s south coast. The Gothic-style structure seemed to have been there forever, a symbol of resilience and faith that had endured centuries despite harsh weather conditions. It drew in visitors from all corners of the world, each eager to experience its unique beauty. 

I was one such visitor, taking my last photo on my Icelandic journey before heading home. I snapped a picture as I stood beneath this incredible relic and captured something extraordinary – a moment I will never forget. 

The church contains powerful spiritual forces within it; some believe it has even taken on supernatural abilities over time! This church only adds to its mystique and makes it even more fascinating than before. As I looked at my photo later, taken from just outside the doors of the Black Church, I felt like something magical had happened while there – something far more significant than anything words could describe.

Fog is a natural filter that can create depth and mood in photography. When you hear that gentle sound of waves crashing against the shoreline, it's enough to make your soul feel at peace. The simplicity at this moment captures everything we love about life - adventure and uncertainty; joyfulness when moments small or significant come around- all reminding us how beautiful our world can be!

The crashing waves and breathtaking ocean views have always given me a sense of peace. As I capture these moments with my camera, it's as if, by photographing this, we are documenting our existence on Earth for future generations to see.

I feel so fortunate that through photography, I can share what life and the ocean looks like in their rawest form, frozen in a moment.

The ocean has always been a powerful motivator for human beings. It stirs emotions in us that no other place or thing can ever hope to match, as our senses are ignited by each wave barreling its way into shore. And then once more, being thrown out onto the sand just beyond reach once it's done performing before disappearing back into oblivion again, always leaving behind only memories that will eventually fade over time like any good story worth telling should.

When you experience the sunrise, you can yearn for renewal and find meaning in your life. Being in the moment while watching the morning sunrise can be one of the most beautiful life experiences. 


The experience of seeing the sunrise gives those who live it the energy and will to overcome the complex challenges life imposes on them.


It's your best chance to figure out what to do with your life. You may even ponder on why you were put on this planet and what purpose you may have. The experience gives you the drive to push through all your challenges and arrive at your goals.

In this scene, capturing textures and light is ever-changing, and you can be in for some surprises, just like catching a sun star in the most unlikely of places. I took this early last year, and it is at one of my most favourite locations near home.

I stared out the window of the train inside a busy New York train station, transfixed by the fast-paced motion of the world outside. 

Time was fleeting and every minute felt like a race against the clock. 

Amidst the throngs of people rushing to their destinations, I wanted to take a snapshot that captured the essence of modern life: a chaotic blur of motion of the train moving off from the station platform.

In a photography journey, it's the importance of not fixating on predetermined expectations for conditions, light, or shots. Such rigid expectations often result in more disappointments than successes.

During a particular shoot in Iceland, the weather threw a curveball my way – the sky was dominated by low, foreboding clouds. Faced with this challenge, I decided to change my approach and embrace the opportunity to capture a darker, moodier atmosphere. Opting for a longer exposure, I experimented with the limited available light. To my surprise, this deviation from the norm resulted in one of the most memorable sunrises of my time in Iceland.

In the realm of photography, cultivating flexibility and adaptability proves to be a valuable mindset, enabling the discovery of unexpected beauty even in the face of unforeseen circumstances. It's the willingness to let go of preconceived notions that often leads to the most captivating and lasting moments captured through the lens.
