The fifth in a series of photo editions minted in 2023. This is the most recent photo in this monthly series so far, having been taken just last month during a weeklong visit to Tokyo. I rarely use a flash but always find myself drawn to photos taken with one, and despite my fumbling frustration with getting it to work the way I wanted it to I committed to shooting with a flash for the entire trip. One evening walking back to my hotel it started raining and I caught this moment as these two people were simultaneously putting up their umbrellas. Vancouver is all about raincoats, Japan loves it's umbrellas and I've always loved shooting them. When I shot this I noticed the sticker on the first girl's phone and that's what I was hoping to catch, thinking perhaps it would have an interesting similarity to her own hair style and caught the woman behind here completely by accident. Sometimes the accidental background activity ruins a shot, in this one I think it made it. I also really love how the flash played with the raindrops on the clear umbrellas, making them look like metal flake sparkles.

I took this photo in 2010, it's my family sharing a moment on the Paris Metro with a kind stranger. It was swiped from my Flickr account and became a meme taglined NO ONE IS BORN RACIST. That invited years of hateful comments & personal attacks. In 2019 we searched for and reconnected with the stranger, exchanging stories and experiences. Our shared trauma repaired by human connection.

NO ONE IS BORN RACIST

There are 37 million people living in Tokyo, and we've all perfected the art of absolute indifference as we pass each other on the streets, stand next to each other in lines, and share space on the trains. An electricity grid flowing at light speed. But sometimes, if you are careful and keep your eyes open, sometimes you can catch a moment, a connection - a spark as it happens. Momentarily threatening to derail it all, and then, just as quick, it's gone. 

Don't blink or you'll miss it.

The Rockabilly dancers at Yoyogi Park are legendary, and consistent as clockwork. But it's not just an act for them they live it full time - recognizable anywhere else immediately. I always loved this shot from Omote Sando and it was in the early edits of my book DON'T GO OUTSIDE but the grain and motion on the film just didn't quite fit in the end so I pulled it. The style however, was never questionable.

There's very little street crime in Shibuya but lots of police everywhere, most often standing around bored. Giving directions is the most exciting thing they get to do most days, occasionally something really big like a truck needing to turn around happens and they get to block traffic. This photo appeared in my 2017 photobook "Don't Go Outside" which collected several years of my street photos from Tokyo.

I've been fascinated by AI generative imagery for a while. After learning recently that I could feed one of my own images into DALL-E to use as the source, I couldn't wait to try it. Using my famous Tokyo Crow, I made 3 successive generations. Each built with the results of the previous. My work fed to DALL-E, then DALL-E's variations fed back into itself. I love how the increasingly abstract reimaginations of my work still feel related. The exploration of stripes and movement is exciting and the resulting visuals ever more haunting. At times suggestive of the original crow, but at other almost hinting at something else. To me these feel like an old duplicated VHS tape, recorded over several times creating a warping and burred reminder of what was once there. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

The third in a series of photo editions minted in 2023. Having just returned to Vancouver and being welcomed by fresh snow, I was reminded of this photo I took late one night during my first winter here. I've often said that photographers see the world differently, not just looking at the world but looking at how the world looks. When walking around, every turn has potential and with the right framing even the mundane can become beautiful.

The first time I visited Venezia was in the era before ubiquitous high speed mobile data and as such I spent a lot of time trying not to get lost, though usually failing. Small twisting streets that wind their way through buildings built on top of other buildings and passageways that dead end in water. I doubled back, retraced steps and tried again. Always looking around for something recognizable to locate against. And I got the feeling everyone else was doing the same. I visited again last month and the experience was totally different. Everyone, myself included, heads down staring at a map on our phones, perfectly navigating the labyrinth like city but missing everything along the way. At some point on the trip I decided to stop knowing where I was going, to try to get lost and figure it out along the way. It took longer, but it was much more interesting. One thing that has been a constant through all of my visits, is thinking about how fucking annoying all of us must be to everyone who lives there. And rather than pretend it wasn't the case, I went ahead and embraced it with this classic street photo for a classic European city.

Unlike the preceding pieces, which celebrated direct interaction, this artwork is only available to those from whom the artist is physically distanced, and whom he will not mention the piece to in person during that week. By purposefully embracing this sense of detachment, the piece provocatively investigates the dynamics of our increasingly digitized relationships, posing poignant questions about the roles of proximity and separation in the formation and sustenance of connections.

The tenth in a series of photo editions minted in 2023. Like the others in this series this NFT is a limited edition, available for 23 hours only, on the first of each month.

August 2020 was hot and rainy, making the usual summer humidity that much worse. Add in the fear and restrictions around the first wave of COVID which we'd been dealing with for over 6 months at this point and a normal day at this point was already quite stressful. But on this day in particular the contrast of a far right (actual) nazi demonstration overlapping with a Black Lives Matter march in Shibuya Crossing was something I'll never forget. The anti-racist counter protesters outnumbered the nazis a good 20:1 even before the BLM march arrived, and there were dozens of police assigned to keep the peace. The wild thing to me, having experienced a lot of violence around this topic first hand, was that even in this incredibly uncomfortable and high tension situation, people barely raised their voices. The politeness of Japanese society was evident even here, as people in both camps were careful not to bump into anyone as they calmly handed out their respective flyers.
