Geometry Dreams is a series of experiments in perceptual space, a term used in architecture to describe how a space is experienced from a fixed viewpoint. It diverges from actual physical space, because perception can be manipulated by environmental factors.

The inspiration for this project comes from the many hours spent in 3D modeling software, editing complex geometries at a micro level. Zoomed in, there is a tendency to lose one's sense of the overall geometry. Local constellations of vertices and triangles present as microspaces in themselves, abstracted and broken up. 

Using 3D models from my archives of generative sketches, Geometry Dreams are rendered snapshots of such accidental spaces. Color manipulated to further enhance the sense of perceptual space, depth cues of lights and shading are sometimes distorted until the image becomes a color field. Other images, more true to their origin as rendering, depict structures with an aesthetic that might be described as "Algo Brutalism".

Cut-ups is a collection of excerpts (cropped details, extreme zooms) from ongoing sketches with 3D software (Blender). Working with generative geometric models that range from hard, architectural forms to organic surfaces, I use rendering as a way to "photograph" them - both in the sense of documentation and as a means of creating new visual compositions.

Cut-ups don't convey a sense of the actual composition, rather they are isolated details cut out of high-resolution images. This reflects the process of "discovery" through setting up (artificial) lights and cameras, geometries and textures -  only to be captivated by unexpected details and the in-between things. 

It might be the optical delights of photorealistic rendering engines, used all wrong. Or finding glitches in my geometry, bad code that has produced faulty constructs that in the end turn out more interesting. Cut-ups is a collection of these visual moments.

The MMXI variants are a reference to the 2011 origin of the project as a textile pattern generator. These will be airdropped to collectors of the A and B variants.

Sugar Free, All Additives: A series of hyper-saturated images,  all juicy geometries and synthetic colors.

The 3D models used were created using spherical harmonics, a well-known group of functions with spatial parameters lying in spherical coordinate space. Spherical harmonics typically produce organic and lush 3D forms, with symmetrical features.

These sketches originated as experiments with 3D gradient textures, which proved a fertile playground once combined with spherical harmonics geometry.

3D rendering, color manipulation, generative 3D models

A collection of 20 rendered and color manipulated images, exploring the mechanics of ray tracing as a creative method. Rather than photorealistic representations, Elysian Fields manipulates the parameters of synthetic optics (camera, lights, 3D geometry and procedural textures) to create images that range from the psychedelic techno-Baroque, to the serene.

Named after Elysium, the blessed afterlife in Greek mythology, this series represents an inflection point in Marius Watz’ creative practice. Having worked with code and generative systems since the early 1990’s, it is a departure in the sense that no code or strict ruleset is used. But the aesthetic focus remains consistent: Investigating the chaotic fringes of algorithms to produce images that feel at times both organic and mechanical, using color to provoke an almost kinetic reaction in the eye of the viewer.

In a sense, Elysian Fields also represents coming full circle. Experimenting with 3D rendering (using DKBTrace, later POV-Ray) in his late teens was how Watz discovered his visual interests. POV-Ray’s text-based modeling language allowed him to write code to generate 3D objects, inspired by the work of William Latham. This convergence of interests got Watz his start as an artist, producing visuals for the nascent Oslo techno scene in 1994.

The images of Elysian Fields echo many of the visual ideas in Watz’ early 3D work, matured by three decades of visual experimentation.


Collectors of Elysian Fields are entitled to collect a signed physical print, 25” x 33.3” / 63.5 x 84.7 cm, printed on archival paper. The cost of printing (TBD) and international shipping shall be covered by the collector. Only one print can be requested per token.

'Returns (Fragment)' is a single cycle animation capture from the live, generative code output exhibited on the Schlosser Media Wall at the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), March - May 2025.

'Returns' depicts Aleksandra Jovanic's ongoing exploration of human psychology, algorithms, data visualizations, and the tendency to create connections and discern meaningful patterns in otherwise unrelated or seemingly random elements. In this work, a sequence of bands emerges, "walking" pseudorandomly in homage to Jovanic's favored random walk algorithm. They bounce off screen edges and eventually decay, yet the cycle is renewed with each new birth. Meanwhile, graphical elements in the background further enrich the depiction of periodic trends, the cyclic nature of life and time, and variations that unfold seasonally, annually, monthly, or daily.

'Returns' is part of 'Compositions in Code: The Art of Processing and p5.js', curated by Regina Harsanyi, fourth series of media art installations for MoMI's Schlosser Media Wall presented in partnership with the Tezos Foundation and in association with the Processing Foundation.

MoMI Exploder

'Exploder' is an exercise in escaping the screen, an abstract 3D wireframe geometry translated into tangible space. The piece is first projected and then "drawn" using artist tape, with a human trying to approximate the hard edges of vector space with tape and scalpel.

A black-only beta version was shown in 2009, with the first full color version developed for Watz's first solo show in Oslo, 2010.

'MoMI Exploder' is part of Compositions in Code: The Art of Processing and p5.js, curated by Regina Harsanyi, fourth series of media art installations for MoMI's Schlosser Media Wall presented in partnership with the Tezos Foundation and in association with the Processing Foundation.
