Revival of Aesthetics - Metaverse Carpet #3

Muraqqa is a testament to various periods in Azerbaijan's history, with its narrative woven through the different styles of miniature paintings found within an album, or Muraqqa. Though the images reflect a traditional sense of realism and stationary structure, they mask an undercurrent of internal dynamics.

The art is brought to life in the form of a digital storyline, created by the artist who delicately recrafts the original miniature paintings. The traditional Muraqqa, rich in authenticity, serves as a blueprint for building a digital counterpart, an alternate virtual realm. Adding layers to the original content, the artist introduces his own narratives through a video installation.

Setting the characters of the Muraqqa into motion, he invites the audience to a narrative playground. This animation emphasizes the artificiality of the creation with animated effects and sparks a fictional storytelling experience that transcends the confines of its original context. The narratives within the miniature paintings may seem fabricated as they are the products of the artists' minds, yet the animation seamlessly weaves together both mythical elements and trustworthy information.

The artist's interpretation of the depicted events, driven by the inner dynamics of the paintings, brings forth a unique vision. This process of storytelling reveals the inherent nature of interpretation and showcases how content manipulation can occur.

Moreover, the artist acknowledges the 2019 Biennale Arte agenda of Azerbaijan, which revolves around the spread of misinformation. He argues that people hold limitless potential in interpreting a single image or fact. Thus, he encourages viewers to forge new narratives and proposes different ways of linking and contextualizing images.

The collection is a debut collaboration between the innovative algorithms created by Radugadesign, a multimedia design studio and the vision of prominent new media artist Orkhan Mammadov. Although the artwork started life as a carpet pattern, the final product is a constantly changing visual algorithmic flow that entrances and immerses the viewer.

As a result, Mammadov pushes the boundaries of tradition and digital and questions technology's role as a form of memory and a tool of power. Labelled as the “Orient,” this movement hardly captures the broad swath of territory to which it aims to refer, such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia.

In Orientalist art, the East was often depicted as a vast, exotic landscape, characterized by rolling sand dunes, lush palm groves, and towering mountain ranges. These landscapes were often shown in a highly stylised and idealised manner, with images of pristine deserts, crystal-clear oases, and snow-capped peaks.

At the same time, these depictions of geography in Orientalist art were often not representative of the true nature of the East. “Badkube” transforms Baku's gust patterns data into flux generative art paintings inspired by the ancient Azerbaijani wind myth “Gilavar & Khazri - Struggle of Good and Evil”. Cold and rough Khazri is associated with negativeness, and Mild and gentle Gilavar is associated with goodness forming an important chain in Azerbaijani mythology and beliefs that are related to the struggle between Good and Evil.

"Badkube : Gilavar" explores the paradox of soft gentle wind blowing from the Caspian sea to the site in the harsh cold of winter and explores the phenomenon of high-speed winds in short bursts and the constant unseen poetic dance between the forces of nature and the built environment.

Hanging on walls inside homes since time immemorial, hand-woven carpets are vessels of history. They contain tradition, symbolism and memories threaded into finely knotted craftsmanship. With their geometric patterns being as important as the textile itself, the carpet as an artwork occupies a position far beyond a piece of ornamental decoration, rather an integral part of Middle Eastern cultural heritage. Yet for Orkhan Mammadov, the carpet as artwork belongs as a piece of futuristic heritage.

Through a densely complex mathematics-based art practice Mammadov reinvents traditional carpet design techniques by employing machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI). He uses his personal heritage as raw data, carefully documenting historical sources of ornamental carpet patterns and recontextualizes that data into the digital age. In this act, he is placing himself, the artist, simultaneously as a researcher and exhibitor in the process of creating his art.

‘Relic’ reveals a new visual language of carpet patternry through a collaboration between artist and machine. Harnessing the power of AI, Mammadov uses GAN algorithms to study the visual similarities of a massive carpet pattern archive collected over seven years of intensive research. Then, using a specifically designed coding structure, the relationship between artist and machine produces unique yet familiar patterns. Deliberately relinquishing part of his authority over the final product, Mammadov is questioning cultural appropriation and dissolution of deep-rooted cultural traditions in a globalized world. Yet he is also reclaiming ownership of them within a contemporary context and rewriting their position as relics of the past.

Mammadov expands the interpretation of patterns, moving them away from the craftsmanship of carpet weaving, to computing systems that recognize regularities in data sets. In this process, what was formerly historical data, now becomes the threads of information for the digital carpet.

Exploring the possibilities that new technologies can bring to heritage, ‘Relic’ transforms the way we understand culture and how it morphs through the lens of societal changes. It proposes alternative futures, creating ways of communicating with history and giving rise to a new age of multiculturalism across technologies. Within ‘Relic’, the old and the new unite to reinvent each other.

“Muraqqa - Data Miniatures” is an anthology of 111 artworks, created by Orkhan Mammadov to mark his transition from computer scientist to renowned artist over a decade.
