Artist B blends Artist A's initial image with an image of their own (1+1=3!), using Midjourney or any other AI program, resulting in artwork that is surprising, collaborative, and pushing the boundaries of individual styles to create new worlds of colour, texture and form.

Many people find guidance from animal messengers that come into our lives at key moments to help us move through challenges and point us in the right direction. Across cultures, horned creatures represent connection to spirit, with horns and antlers acting like antennae to other realms. Deer and antelope are known by many cultures to deliver a message of peace.

This synthetic photography, or post-photography, was made in collaboration with neural networks. I spent a year developing a system of prompts and techniques to produce work in a photographic language that syncs with my lens-based practice. Using my own photography, drawings, and collages as inputs transforms these technologies into personalized, expressive instruments. AI enables me to express ideas and tell stories (some that have lived in my imagination for a decade!) that I had not previously been able to produce through any other medium.

I love humans' increasing ability to communicate across species, and am fascinated by the cross cultural understanding that antlers act like antennae for spiritual energy. ✨

// Interspecies Communication

Living in the American Southwest for the past decade, I’ve been blown away by the gorgeous, unassuming power of the semi-arid desert, especially in Sedona, Arizona where our son spent the first five years of his life. There’s a uniqueness to the way these lands clear the mind and uplift the spirit. The rainbow-colored landscapes seem to encourage exploration, freedom, imagination. I feel this region itself embodies the spirit of the 6079 protocol.

When asked to explore the symbolism of 6079 for this commissioned piece, I wanted to have some fun with it. I felt like a kid, imagining serious adults retreating to these inspirational lands to refresh their souls and exchange ideas. As my work often strikes a balance between unveiling the magic of life on Earth, and exploration into surrealist, hyperbolic allegory, the fist had to be the allegory. The symbol for resistance to oppression, the universal icon for “Power to the People” had to be big. 

Hence, “Solidarity Retreat,” 2024.
