When the forces of nature clash head on, the transfer of energy can be palpable.  
The stirred ocean moves with so much underlying power that when it hits the submerged granite reefs off the east coast of Australia, some spectacular displays of abstract art are formed. With deep chasms, rippling colours and explosions of froth as waves implode in on themselves and the rebounding energy off solid rock tries to escape in any chaotic direction it can. Putting my drone and myself into these places during big swells is a massive rush and this image is a stern reminder of how unpredictable these conditions can be.



Chaos Engine

These Southern Right Whales were cruising just ten meters from the shore of Warriewood Beach in Sydney. I arrived at the exact moment the mother's huge back appeared out of the shore break, looking like some kind of leviathan sea monster. At first, I couldn't fathom what I was seeing. When I saw her spout water into the air I couldn't believe I had hit the jackpot so big. Whales this close to shore are not something you see very often if ever at all. I unpacked my drone with my hands trembling from adrenaline and launched it, being careful not to spook them by getting too close. The next half hour was magical. They cruised up and down the beach amongst some very surprised and lucky surfers just meters from the shoreline. The young calf was hiding underneath her mother and coming out to play every so often. I was in awe watching the show from above and was able to get some amazing images and video footage of which the collector will receive with this NFT. A very special moment.



A Mother's Love

The power of mother nature is a force that can be awe inspiring to witness. Combining my love of the ocean, aerial photography, and now storm chasing into one capture is like a dream come true. 

When I joined the NFT community the first new art genre I was exposed to and became obsessed with, was storm chasing . One particular photographer welcomed me in with open arms and her work capturing  storms inspired me to chase even more myself. Now whenever I get the chance I check the weather reports and warnings and head straight to my favourite spots to try and capture ocean scapes with massive storm cells like this one.

This is not an easy thing to do by any means. The hunt continues, but each time I nail a shot like this one, it will be added to the Storm Surfers collection.

Storm Cell Swell

Having surfed the shallow slabs and reefs of Australia's east coast for three decades, finding the right conditions at a particular spot has been a lifelong pursuit. There are so many factors to consider, such as swell direction, the period of time in between each swell (a longer period means more powerful waves), wind direction and speed, as well as the tidal height. Not to mention the differently formed shapes of each reef, point break, or beach and their sandbars. Over the years, I have found that more often than not, most breaks work best at mid-tide. Occasionally, some spots work best at high tide, and even more rarely, dead low tide is good. 

The spot where this piece was captured works best at mid-tide going high. The shape of each wave pitches more and creates a hollower barrel inside the wave. I find that the best conditions for surfing also produce the best conditions for photography, which can be a tough choice for a surf-obsessed photographer.

The Ocean is our giver of life. A true life support system that needs to be respected and appreciated.

I chose to make each image from the series a black and white version as it something I have been experimenting with for ocean abstract work and will be minting more of in future. I thought this would be a nice way to separate out this piece and the opening image is a masterpiece in of itself. Originally titled 'Clash of Light' this was intended as a 1/1 however, I wanted to give you all something as special as I could for believing in me and keeping me going here. Thank you all.

It took me many years to realise just how connected the ocean and a sense of peace and happiness are in my life. It almost feels like a superpower when you discover something this beautiful and therapeutic for your well-being. I will never take this for granted again and will always have massive respect for this incredible part of our world. Respect, honour, and a quest to improve attitudes and actions toward our oceans are my goals, as well as spreading the joy with as many people as possible.

I feel like we can learn a lot just being near and observing the Ocean. 
This piece reminds me of the old saying "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" The results of doing so can bring a cataclysmic crash down upon those that do. Stay true to yourself and stay true to others. Peace and calm come to those who resist the temptation to clash and go against the current too often. There is nothing wrong with fighting for what you want and believe in, but fighting to cause drama and churning up others, leads to rocky waters.

In the belly of the beast, under the whale's mouth. 
This day was a wild one. A turbulent day at a dangerous surf spot where strong swells explode over a shallow slab reef break. I decided to venture out and test myself. However, after two waves, the swell grew rapidly and the reef became visible beneath, prompting me to exercise caution and stay within my limits. 

Upon returning to land, I witnessed a surfer being towed into the larger waves via jetski. As I filmed the scene with my drone, a violent storm approached, the sky putting on a spectacular display. Despite the gale force winds, my drone handled well and I captured some incredible footage. It was an intense moment to be less than 1 meter off the water surface with the drone, avoiding the oncoming waves, whilst a high velocity storm cell blew in from the south. 


There was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to shoot something epic so I braved the conditions and was able to capture some amazing moments. This piece is a composite image that harnesses the feeling of what I experienced this day in, and above the ocean. The surfer captured via drone and the sky captured using my handheld camera, manually stitched to create wave theatre.

Much like our tormented minds, the sea spits and hisses when storms break. I'm hunting those moments, raw and unhinged, that draw us in and envelop us. This body of work looks to explore the darker challenges we face and the beauty of the struggle.

This open edition was intended to be a piece in my upcoming series 'Drone Surfers' With the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange - FTX and the subsequent rippling effects on Thursday November 10th 2022, shockwaves have been sent through the community with many experiencing heavy losses on different fronts, myself included. 

This piece is now free to claim as an open edition and it is my hope that spreading art at this time can help to counter any negative sentiment within the NFT space. This image was a year in the making. I’d had the concept in mind for so long and my job just didn’t allow me the mental space to create it. 

Getting the right conditions with the light and the surf was tricky as this spot is an hour and a half away from my home. Multiple visits were needed.

After chipping away at it for months I finally finished  it and posted it on Instagram in 2018. It went viral. 

I think everyone who’s ever seen an aerial shot of Bronte ocean pool had thought the same thing but I was the first to bring the concept to life. It was shared by thousands of accounts across the world and still gets shared now. 

I never saw a cent for the use of this image and it is my hope it will take on a new life on the blockchain so I may make something for the time I put into the piece.

With daydream skies and crystal-clear waters, like plate glass reflecting the fairytale clouds and sparkling like diamonds. Let your mind drift away while you wait patiently for the next set, feet dangling in the temperate saltwater, the currents softly swirling, and gentle swells rocking you back and forth in a hypnotic dance. Drifting away into scenes like these is how we survive and recharge in the modern-day lifestyle.

The frozen image of a crashing wave captures the elegant moment of two ocean dancers in a graceful embrace. Two parts meet and swirl together, their frothy edges suspended mid-motion. Their story hinted, with the suspended splashes and foam highlighting the beauty and intensity of their dance, preserving the rhythm and grace of their brief, mesmerising performance.

Shiny Dancers

Painting with the ocean is a beautiful way to create art. Using lighting, composition and direction is a hard thing to balance in aerial photography, especially when water moves so rapidly that timing these frames can be frustrating at times. But when it all comes together the rewards express a deep love and connection to the soul of ocean art.

As a young boy growing up it was always my mother by my side everyday. My father would go to work and often be home after I was asleep. Weekends were adventures with Mum and Dad but for the early years it was Mum who showed me the ropes of day to day life, keeping me close by and safe always. 
The bond I have with the ocean comes from my father mostly but witnessing these special moments of mother and calf humpback whales and how they behave reminds me of my own childhood. 
Mother ocean providing life to so many beautiful creatures, of which whales hold a special place in my heart.

The journey of 2023 has been a year of growth for me. Through listening, learning, improving, and connecting. Although there have been many challenges, I can say with confidence, as I look back on the year that was, I have met each challenge head-on and passed many tests. Like facing a set of massive waves crashing down on me, I know I now have what it takes to not only stand my ground but to head towards the solutions to problems and come out the other side with renewed vigor and accomplishment.

This series has also reinforced my life motto: "Feel the fear and go for it anyway."

I cannot begin to find the words to thank every single one of you that came along for this journey with me. You have gifted me a completely different perspective as to what it means to be an artist in our day and age. I have a much healthier self-esteem now, and my self-belief has pumped higher than any meme coin. For this, I will be eternally grateful. This series started as a risky venture with fears and trepidation attached. What unfolded was the most beautiful success story I have ever experienced. I owe that all to you.

As I look back on the year of 2023 I think mostly of the turbulent times. It has been a very challenging year for me and my family and often I have felt like I was failing them. Through the wash and constant beatdowns I have been able to survive simply by keeping a positive mindset and keeping on going. I have very large goals for the remainder of this year and I know I can achieve them. My friends in web 3 and NFTs have played a massive role in helping me maintain my positive outlook and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you.

Tempest

Into the jet stream. As the world moves faster and faster towards the digital age and technological advancements, I am beginning to wonder what cost this is having on the natural world. Are we evolving into digital beings and leaving our planet behind? Are we the aliens we are so obsessed with? As life seemingly moves faster and faster I am becoming more conscious of the importance of slowing down. Of taking time to stop and think, to connect with nature and with each other. Jumping in the salt water of our oceans and being swirled around by the force of the waves, removing negative ions and cleansing my mind is so powerful and I feel very blessed to have that therapy accessible every day if I want it. The importance of this resource for life is so immense it is deeply saddening knowing that we are actively destroying it and continuing to do so while knowing that we are.

MID TIDE

The divine light. It is what brings life to a photo. Finding the right direction and the right angle of light hitting a wave is what makes these abstract images come alive. This month I had an experience that reminded me that even though there is darkness in the world, there is always light that cuts through even the most challenging times. I will always seek the light. It is what my art represents, it what I live for and strive for in every creative experience and expression. This image lead to a noticeable improvement in my art and my working processes. It should be a 1/1 image as it is the strongest work in this series in my opinion. But as promised I will continue to deliver my best work to supporters of this series and continue to strive for excellence in every shot I mint.
