my mother was a midewiin elder. she was resilient. she survived religous & cultural persecution of the residential school system in canada. many indigenous children did not. 215 indigenous children were just unearthed at a residential school-there will be more. i offer semah wrapped in red cloth (the ancestors can see red), to send those young child souls on the journey to join their ancestors. i do this today on what is canada day 2021

on this day, the sun is at its lowest point in the sky, traveling across the sky world above us in a short stride, resulting in the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.  In understanding the interconnectedness of all things, we recognize that the cosmos– the sun, moon, stars, and other planets–affect us and connect us in undeniable ways
