When Picasso appeared before a magistrate he was asked if he knew Apollinaire. He lied. "I have never seen this man."

I’ve always found that tidbit about him so amusing.

the second edition of THE WEEDS celebrates the organizers and some participants in the first impressionist exhibition that took place from April 15–May 15, 1874.

it was organized by a group of artists who called themselves the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, Etc., and showed the radical work of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, and Mademoiselle Berthe Morisot, among others.

at the time these artists were not well-known within the Paris art world. they were the weeds that challenged the perfectly curated gardens of the gatekeepers (i.e., salons, academies, and galleries) with their newfound understanding of science, color theory, and natural light. 

we are once again at a similar point in the art world where the establishment, whales, and platforms are challenged by a group of artists with their newfound understanding of technology, copyright, and provenance.

in the same tongue-in-cheek manner that impressionists were given their name, the trash artists take their name from supporters of the establishment who deemed creations by artists like Robness and Max Osiris to be #trashart.

this second edition is a gentle reminder to these "gatekeepers" that art history repeats itself. no one remembers the names of the gatekeepers from the salons, galleries, and academic institutions. but impressionism became modern art and continues to inspire us today.

the trash art movement (trashism?) and the artists that align with it will live on to inspire and influence art history long beyond the shortsightedness of your crypto-lined wallets.

As far as NFT art goes The People’s Potato is a one-click moshed potato. It’s an intentionally low-effort, low-quality NFT. And that’s what makes this a fine piece of Trash Art.  But it’s so much more than that!

In July 2020 I minted one billion of these tokens and continue to sell them at 0,0001 ETH as an experiment to challenge the ideals of rarity and scarcity in cryptoart.  They will always remain at that price until all have sold.

It went on to to be shortlisted for the most innovative NFT in 2020 and eventually received The People’s Choice Award.

the muse for this piece is proof i shared to sure up the thin veil of trust we're clinging to in a remote environment with anonymous actors. and now that proof ends up here as a piece of trash art.

inspired by conversations i've been part of on twitter and in private chats recently, this piece speaks broadly to the speed of trust in a remote environment where anonymity is an accepted part of the culture. in this environment, trust is hard to earn and very easy to lose. 

so to mitigate some of that, i'm transparent about my government name as the artist SΞCONĐ RΞΛLM. this works for me but doesn't work for everyone.

recently i verified my identity with a photo and license. seemed appropriate at the time. but the recipient hilariously responded with "you could've just dm'ed me from your other twitter account." yep, i could've and maybe next time i will.

and just so we're clear:

SΞCONĐ RΞΛLM is a pseudonym adopted by me (Eric P. Rhodes).

that being said, i also have anonymous avatars out there. but there's only one active in crypto. i hid a clue in this piece. see if you can figure it out what it is.

the first edition of THE WEEDS celebrates being in the weeds of crypto art.

so, welcome to the weeds. where innovation and creation occurred long before some capitalist came by and tried to muck it all up.

the definition of weeds is any plant that grows where you don't want it to grow.

before gardens were curated, buds nipped, trees pruned, and fruit genetically enhanced it was all just wild beauty. there were no weeds. 

now, don't get me wrong. a curated garden is beautiful. pruned rose bushes are gorgeous. gords look great on porches in october. but let's not forget that creation and discovery of the plants started in the weeds and still occurs "in the weeds."

however, if someone called the dark corners of the crypto art world "the weeds," then it seems to me that this person wants to sully the beauty that exists there simply because they have no control over it.

but artists know that the weeds is where innovation and new ideas develop. then over time some capitalist discovers them, prunes them, and tries to turn them into perfectly obedient doers. 

but artists are wild by nature. you can't contain an artist. just like you can't really control plants. you can only hold on to a small piece of who they were.

About "Goodbye, My Love: A ReGenesis"

This piece was created as part of the Brutalist Mannequin series (epr.is/brutalist).  A 12-piece collection about the end of the 12-year relationship with my wife.  However, It remained unminted and untitled until this moment in 2022. 

In 2020, I separated from my wife and was also unceremoniously removed from SuperRare. But life is strange and beautiful. 

Two years later, my ex-wife and I are  exploring a new path forward, together, again. And earlier this year the $RARE community voted to reinstate me to the platform.

Not coincidentally, today is the 2nd anniversary of being removed from
SuperRare. It's also very close to the 10th anniversary of our marriage.

Given the parallels between my personal life and my art life, it seems appropriate to mint this particular piece on SuperRare closing these chapters together with an eye toward a fulfilling future where I will create more art, connect with more people, learn new things, and playing more sports (again). This is my ReGenesis point.
