“nami” is a noun meaning ‘wave(s)’ in Japanese.

The idea for the series arose during a late night exploration while tinkering with various prompts. Geometric waves were the focus. However, a spontaneous output appeared that was naturally depicted and composed.

It resembled The Great Wave of Kanagawa by ukiyo–e artist Katsushika Hokusai. The print depicts three boats navigating through a storm–tossed sea with a large wave in the center and Mount Fuji visible in the background.

From this spontaneous output, with inspiration from Hokusai, NAMI was born and constructed over a three month period using generative AI image and video tools.

Throughout the year, while working on PHOS, I encountered degrees of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that I hadn’t experienced before in my life.

In the darkest moments of confronting fear and past trauma, I leaned not on my own understanding, but trusted in the lord with all my heart. His word became the lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.

I didn't expect to viscerally experience what PHOS aimed to explore. However, I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my testimony with all of you.

I overcame my fear and found my light.

The series utilizes AI, not to demonstrate the capabilities of the technology, but to observe its impact on our society over a short period of time. Dependence on the things we create simultaneously hinders and accelerates progress.

Technology provides humanity with an opportunity to cultivate life and connection, but it can also become a conduit for destruction. As humans, we’re rediscovering what purpose means in a world full of automation and isolation.

The Word of God ensamples what fulfillment truly is when we're in service of others. Our inventions promise ease but at what cost do we forfeit our design for obsolescent growth.
