Carnival Row is part of an ongoing series of digital assemblages - StrangeScapes, where hand painted elements from my many real world paintings are digitally taken apart, and are mixed with pieces that typically don't belong together - digitally embellished and reassembled into whimsical clusters of mutated landscapes, strange beasties, candy trails, constellations, faux fungi and other absurdities. The resultant hybrids of these real world artworks and their virtual avatars are layered, rich, and  their merging more dramatic than the original pieces of art they were born from.

In my real world art, I allow for organic destiny and follow the lead of the fluid paint layers, using it as guide to build a flourish of biomorphic forms. However, creating the composites in StrangeScapes involves a more intentional breaking of existing structures and reassembling of them into newer, denser, chaordic, hybrid forms with a mind of their own. 

Resisting the urge to over edit and paint over the collage in digital format, these StrangeScapes hold echoes of their old selves created in traditional media, revealing the grain of the canvas, the crest and troughs in the lines drawn by a pen running on an uneven surface, misplaced paint splatters and the wee off-kilterness of the human hand, adding to the narrative of the work.

This series is grounded in the strange and fantastical. It is a celebration of the ever evolving, and ever enchanted everyday in life, alongside beautiful dilapidation.

Butterfly Effect

Whale songs in the night sky.
A distant rumble
of drums and boots.
Sounds of yip yip,
of dogs snipping at their feet.

They sound closer this time.
A collision of worlds
And infinite loops.
Of a raging sea
Harpoons
A meadow abloom
And splattered in red

Beyond our vision and our perception bias, there are worlds that operate on rules different from our own. There are light waves that our eyes can’t perceive and sounds that our ears can’t hear and yet there they are operating alongside our own universe, ticking at their own pace and rhythm.

Through my art I imagine slices of such otherworlds that reside at a fantastical intersection of real & the fictitious. My works in this series inspired by following the breadcrumbs trail of the enchanted everydays are surrealistic, grounded in the strange and the whimsical, and significantly influenced by my fascination for narratives of magic realism, chaos theory, organic ecosystems, natural history, parallel universes, and magical beasties in their lush habitats among other things. The intersections of these varied interests allow for a lateral view and infinite possibilities through themes of exploration, new discoveries and symbiotic associations.

Her memory palace is an agglomerate of oddity,
a place like home, 
it's like a reef bed in the deep.
Coral like clusters of caramel popcorn, vintage sunglasses,
ferris wheels and many colored chalk trances
A glitchy screen loop, 
trapped ghosts, 
& olfactory hallucinations. 
Half baked ideas,
& otherworldly persuasions.
Of bicycle rides through fields of poppies,
Raging Oceans
& Enchanted forests 
All awaiting a nod, a nudge, some space to breathe.
Awaiting liberation akin Aladdin's jinn.
