Elasticity is a collection that explores the ambiguity of discrete continuity in architecture.

Elasticity is a tectonic, generative system that combines simple, discrete parts into an elastic relationship between part and whole, creating a discrete and continuous elastic form. A form that celebrates the continuity of digital variation while respecting a discrete approach to a digital whole.

It is a generative follow-up to the project CM.CollabWood, where the same parts were embedded in a real-time participatory architectural environment, where clusters of parts were placed by participants in real-time in collective design sessions to create tangible collective open forms.

DoppelRAUSCH is a playful exploration of the generative capacities of certain media by combining the digital generative series RAUSCH, published on fx(hash), with the analog unique qualities of Riso printing.

The digital variation of the series RAUSCH was created with careful consideration of the limitations of the Riso printing process, including limited palettes of available colors and the resulting monochromatic and polychromatic pixelation. Riso printing is a hybrid process that can result in slight analog variations in duplicated copies, providing a unique quality to each print, just like a generative artwork. 

Risograph(Riso) printing is a printing method that combines elements of screenprinting and photocopying. The process involves using a Risograph machine, a digital duplicator. It creates a master stencil by burning a monochrome design onto a sheet of rice paper, also known as the master. This master is then wrapped around a drum filled with ink. As the drum rotates, the ink is pressed through the master's cut-out areas and onto the paper beneath, creating the desired image.
The hybrid nature of this process leads to slight variations, adding uniqueness to each piece in the series, adding some tangible analogue RAUSCH to the digital RAUSCH, the DoppelRAUSCH. 

A series of curated outputs of the Rausch algorithm were printed as editions using this Riso printing technique. Each generative RAUSCH output produced a looping sequence of 8 frames, creating a digital animation. These 8 images were positioned on an A3 sheet and printed on a Riso digital duplicator, digitized, and digitally reassembled to create the DoppelRAUSCH animation sequence.
Collectors of DoppelRAUSCH can claim an edition of the physical riso prints. Shipping is not included. To order please contact @grasser_alex

RAUSCH is a series of generative artworks that explore imaginary digital architectures. 

This series challenges traditional notions of architectural representation and raises important questions about the role of resolution in design. Just as the pixel resolution of an image affects its perceived quality, the resolution of an architectural space can affect its qualities and livability. By embracing digital variation through codes, this series explores the interplay between abstract and concrete space through multiple resolutions. 

RAUSCH is inspired by the feeling of being overwhelmed by complex, chaotic and messy sensations, and aims to engage the viewer through a sense of wonder, disorientation, and awe.

META BLOCK LINZ


MetaBlockLinz is a meta-participatory architectural project created by Alexander Grasser and Alexandra Parger as part of the exhibition ‘Meta.Space’, opening August 31, 2022, curated by Markus Reindl and Fabian Müller-Nittel at the Francisco Carolinum Linz Austria, directed by Alfred Weidlinger.

MetaBlockLinz is an open architecture, an inclusive collaborative process that encourages playful co-creation, while exploring accelerated collective content production in the Metaverse.
The project consists of three parts that aim to make this open architecture, this hybrid collective form, tangible and accessible in various contexts and spaces:
1) At the core there is a digital environment that enables real-time participatory design activities in the Metaverse, minted as non fungible token on the Tezos blockchain. It allows visitors to place MetaBlocks in a three-dimensional digital space representing the exhibition space at the Francisco Carolinum in Linz. Once inside the virtual environment visitors place these MetaBlocks collectively, they create their visions of a meta-participatory form: the ‘MetaBlockLinz Community Structures’. Once 80 MetaBlocks are placed, the process is stopped and the creators have a few minutes to review their creation and explore the space before the room is reset and a new realtime design session can begin. This temporary persistence of the MetaBlocks is intended to provide an easy and open access to join the process at any time. The project is not about claiming ownership of parts in the virtual space, but rather about playful, creative, and spontaneous collective co-creation. 
2) To explore the collective form in real life, a 1:1 scale architectural prototype is built at Meta.Space exhibition in Linz, based on one of the virtually designed MetaBlock Community Structures. The built structure will be selected by the artists based on structural and aesthetic criteria. This architectural prototype is built from 80 timber blocks each measuring 100 x 20 x 20 cm to create a tangible space that represents and embodies the collaborative efforts of the ‘MetaBlockLinz Community Structures’.  
3) The third part of the project is addressing the documentation of the process to ensure a certain persistence by capturing these moments in videos of the real-time digital design sessions as well as in the recording of the data of the ‘MetaBlock Community Structures’. A documentation video is minted as a NFT and air-dropped to the participants to be digitally accessible. Furthermore this video is displayed on a videoscreen next to the architectural 1:1 prototype at the Meta.Space exhibition at the Francisco Carolinum in Linz, Austria.

The work of Herbert W. Franke can be described as pioneering in the fields of art and science, as well as visionary in its profound reflections on their implications for the future. As a pioneer of a new genre of art, “computer art,” Herbert W. Franke explored new tools and methods that challenged traditional aesthetics. A detailed discussion of this ambivalent relationship between art and science (as well as cybernetic concepts) can be found in his publications “Kunst kontra Technik? Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kunst, Naturwissenschaft und Technik(1978)” or “Phaenomen Kunst - Die naturwissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Aesthetik(1967)”. In addition, Herbert W. Franke’s contribution to contextualizing the work of this then emerging field is recorded in publications such as “Computergrafik - Computerkunst (1971)”, an invaluable source of knowledge for generations to come.

In this publication “Computergrafik - Computerkunst” Herbert W. Franke writes among other things about the rapid development of computer graphics and speculates about its implications, which I quote here: 
“The consequences resulting from this development are rather interesting from a social viewpoint: Every owner of a personal computer is basically in a position to design the patterns for his home environment; basically, it is already possible today to have materials, wallpapers, etc. printed according to one’s own designs or wishes, but industry is not yet sufficiently organized or prepared. This example clearly demonstrates that the increased use of computers, in connection with interactive methods which are oriented towards human needs, does not at all lead to the uniformity which many people have been afraid of, but will contribute to the shaping of our environment.” - (H.W. It did not take many years for these ideas and visions to become more and more tangible. For example, Herbert W. Franke’s concepts of generative artworks that allow for a high degree of customization were featured and made accessible as Wolfram demonstration projects in 2011 (demonstrations.wolfram.com/GeneratingPatternsSimilarToPeruvianTextiles). However, generative artworks have only recently attracted mainstream attention through the innovation of blockchain technologies, creating a new market for generative artworks.

As an architect, educator, researcher, and artist who also works at the intersection of science, art, and architecture, this tangible vision of human-centered applications and customizable environments, architectures, and artworks is central to my work. Therefore, “Tangible” pays tribute to these developments by producing the curated output of a generative artwork (Elasticity on fx(hash)) as an industrially woven textile artwork, making the entire process and artwork tangible.
