This portrait was created for my yoga men series called Inside the Warrior - the masculine side of yoga. Ryan was quietly sitting with his arm in a reverse prayer position that stretches the chest and shoulder muscles. I composed this image to show his tattoo on his inner upper arm with the word "Faith." This portrait has always spoken volumes with its simplicity.

Playtime

This portrait is called "The Artist" and is the first piece in a series that represents the first step in the creative process of an artist. 

A new idea is born naked and vulnerable. This is how we begin as an artist - with simply a idea and often that idea is vague at best. 

The idea needs time to take shape to be fully realized. The creative process is not always easy or predicable. The journey is often challenging and full of self doubt and even a bit of fear. 







The Artist

Drift diving in about 100' of water in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. We were diving the smaller islands to the north - Darwin & Wolf Islands- because that was the best places to catch a sighting of the Whale Sharks. Females come to the Galapagos to give birth in the Spring so we got to see a few of these expectant mothers.

There were 6 of us in a scuba diving group, drift diving in a 2 knot current at a depth of about 100' when she comes out of the darkness and passes between all of us. I actually had to move out of her way before she swam into me. These creatures are enormous and magnificent. I only caught a part shot of her because I was so shocked to see one for the first time I forgot I was holding my camera rig.

Surfers catching waves one summer evening at San Onofre Beach in Southern California. Whenever I see this image it reminds me of the movie poster for the surf documentary "Endless Summer" that anyone growing up in SoCal has seen many times.

Endless Summer

I worked with Blaine on several occasions in Los Angeles. His heritage is part Japanese (his mother) and the characters tattooed on his arm spell Strong, which is also his surname. I'm always fascinate to learn how tattoos tell some of a person's story...

Esmerelda is holding a deep hip stretch in yoga called Pigeon Pose. 

Stretching the hip muscles causes a release; pent-up emotions may resurface, suppressed memories may arise, unconscious tension still held onto from a traumatic event may bubble up.

In the dark hollows of a dive location at the Channel Islands, I had angled my underwater strobe to light the scene on a reef rock when this small rockfish wandered into my shot. Back scatter is what we call visible particles in the water that hinder visibility. This image was captured using a 35mm underwater film camera and underwater strobe.

All images were created undersea with a Nikonos film camera off the coast of California at the Channel Islands and the Galapagos Marine Reserve is Ecuador.

Quietly gliding through the kelp forests in the cold waters of the Channel Islands. The surge and movement of the water made the kelp leaves look like they were dancing as they swayed in the ocean current. I captured this image on film with a Nikonos V camera with an underwater strobe.

Sunflower

A collection of images captured with an SX-70 Polaroid using Time Zero polaroid film that allows you to manipulate the emulsion for about a minute after the image is created and before it is finished processing the polaroid image.

Fascinated with what I could do with Time Zero film I photographed my neighbor's 1970's Volkswagon Beetle one Saturday morning using my SX-70 Polaroid camera.
