Arijit Mondal 

Asiatic Lions have their last home in the Gir forest of Gujarat in India. Once widespread over Asia and the Middle East, they were hunted and killed in large numbers. Other environmental factors like deforestation reduced their numbers to less than 200 in the late 19th century and were restricted to the Gir forest region. But with support from the local community and the Forest department, considerable efforts to save the last of what remains have been successful. Their numbers are rising gradually to more than 700 or more as per the latest census.

This image is of Asiatic Lion cub who is the future generation. He might grow into a mighty ruler of the jungle one day.  
This edition is dedicated to them and an attempt to spread a word their story.

Wings on Waves

"Fishing in troubled water" is a story of fishermen in our city. 
The photograph was taken on Damodar river during monsoon season.
The river during this time is filled bank to bank and is quite turbulent. These fishermen risk their life everyday for their livelihood.

As a photograph technically shows 3 layers of the water, the man with net & the platform on which he is standing. The 3 layers divided the frame in third rule while the shadow breaks the symmetry.

The Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) is a leopard subspecies widely distributed on the Indian subcontinent. The species Panthera pardus is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because populations have declined following habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching for the illegal trade of skins and body parts, and persecution due to conflict situations.
As of 2020, the leopard population within forested habitats in India's tiger range landscapes was estimated at 12,172 to 13,535 individuals down from 50,000+ in the last century

Green Vine Snake

These are colubrid snakes distributed throughout tropical Asia. They are considered by some scientists to be mildly venomous and are what is commonly termed as 'rear-fanged' or more appropriately, opisthoglyphous, meaning their enlarged teeth or fangs, intended to aid in venom delivery, are located in the back of the upper jaw, instead of in the front as they are in vipers or cobras.
As colubrids, these snakes do not possess a true venom gland or a sophisticated venom delivery system. The Duvernoy's gland of this genus, homologous to the venom gland of true venomous snakes, produces a secretion which, though not well studied, is considered not to be medically significant to humans.
They are found from Sri Lanka and India to China and much of Southeast Asia. Sri Lanka and the Western Ghats of India are major hotspots of diversity for the genus, with 10 of the 17 currently-described species being endemic to these regions.

The Silk Route or Silk Road refers to a network of ancient trade routes connecting Asia, Europe and Africa. Extending more than 6,500 kms, the Silk Route was majorly used to transport Chinese Silk to Europe through Central Asia from 2nd Century BC. However, many trade routes (both sea and land routes) existed in much earlier times that connected the main Silk Route and traded in different commodities ranging from salt to gold. Silk Route’s greatest contribution to world history was not mere trading of few commodities but exchange of ideas, art and science between Asia, Europe and Africa. It was the world’s first information superhighway. The Silk Route in Sikkim is an offshoot of an ancient trade route which came from Lhasa, crossing Chumbi Valley and passed through Nathula Pass and finally took the port of Tamralipta (present Tamluk in West Bengal). The Endangered Fishing Cat

The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia, who resides in the vicinity of wetlands, along rivers, streams, oxbow lakes, in swamps, and mangroves. They are adept swimmer and enters water frequently to prey on fish as its name suggests. It is known to even dive to catch fish. The fishing cat is nocturnal and apart from fish also preys on frogs, crustaceans, snakes, birds, and scavenges on carcasses of larger animals. One of the major threats facing the fishing cat is the destruction of wetlands, which is its preferred habitat. As a result of human settlement, drainage for agriculture, pollution, and wood-cutting most of the wetlands in India are under threat of destruction. Another threat to the fishing cat is depletion of its main prey-fish due to unsustainable fishing practices. It is also occasionally poached for its skin. Since 2016, it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and their conservation process is yet to gather steam under the shadow of conservation of Big Cats

Mangalajodi is an olden village in Odisha at the northern edge of CHILIKA Lake (the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia and second largest coastal lagoon in the world). 
Its vast wetlands attract thousands of migratory birds, journey from as far different places of the world. Its wetlands now host more than 1.5 lakhs of birds in the peak season. Its importance as a significant global wetland habitat and declared as an International Bird Conservation Area.

For Last 8 Years I have been visiting Mangalajodi Village in the state of Odisha, India for bird photography. (More on Mangalajodi - Search in Google)

I have capture some amazing wildlife photos there. Last week I visited again but this time I made it a point to visit the village and meet the people.

Villagers here solely depend on fishing & tourism (in season), very little agriculture (Hard soil). The nearest hospital & school is 20 km away . There is extreme poverty.

I made a pledge to myself and the community leaders there that I will contribute 10% of all Mangalajodi photos that I sell in 2024 as NFTs to do something for the kids of the boatmen in Dec24/Jan25 (Yet to decide how) whenever I visit next.

The donation will be documented and shared here. It will also be made sure of no political intereference and the support goes directly to the needed.

World Thru My lens

The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest space station that is maintained in low Earth orbit by a collaboration of five space agencies.                 

I captured it on 14.03.2025 , just before SpaceX Crew-10 docked on ISS. At this time the ISS was at a height of 410 KM above earth (Approx).                     

Equipment Used -  Nikon D850 + Nikon 500mm f/5.6 Lens + Nikon 1.4X TC + Tripod stabled with sand bags.                                                                    
The final photo is a stack of 3 photo (2 of the moon in focus and 1 of the ISS) done off camera.

Mangalajodi is an olden village in Odisha at the northern edge of CHILIKA Lake (the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia and second largest coastal lagoon in the world).
Its vast wetlands attract thousands of migratory birds, journey from as far different places of the world. Its wetlands now host more than 1.5 lakhs of birds in the peak season.

The Tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest living cat species and a member of the genus Panthera.s. It ranks among the biggest wild cats alive today. Today, it is threatened by poaching, loss and fragmentation of habitat, and was estimated at comprising fewer than 2,500 wild individuals by 2011 (Increased to 3500+ by latest counting).
Facts -
1. Just 3800+ Tigers are there in the wild
2. Highly endangered species threatened by poaching, loss and fragmentation of habitat.
3. Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is only found in India (3200+), Bangladesh (300+), Nepal (150+) & Bhutan (100+), extinct in Pakistan (1906) & China (5+ non-resident, otherwise extinct)
4. It ranks among the biggest wild cats alive today
