GRAILS
TIME-LAPSE
by Roope Rainisto
Studies on multiple moments in time at once: people that are physically present but mentally absent, and vice versa. Collection of 10 works.
"I'm constantly fascinated by the potential for post-photography to break free from a singular time, moment and perspective. One artwork can portray an event from multiple viewpoints, from multiple moments in time. For this collection, for groups of people."
"In a group of people, some of us are not physically present, but their emotions, feelings, shadows are still with us."
"In a group of people, some of us are physically present, but mentally not. They're distant, gone, somewhere else, lost in their own heads."
"I have this fear that when I grow old and I start to look back at my life… did I take a risk? Did I try to do the things I always wanted to do?
I’ve been doing various kind of creative activities for a long time. I’ve been doing photography for almost 30 years. The first half of my life I worked as a professional designer.
So I thought AI will become a huge thing and there’s basically two choices. Either be the first person to learn it or I can be the last person to learn it.
For an artist the challenge is always how to remain in your own recognizable style. On the other side, it gives me the freedom to try to do something new.
The things that I wanted to explore with this artwork try to show multiple points in time. It’s like a combination of times."
"There’s a human need and a human tendency to want to tell stories and then to hear stories.
Asynchronous moments. Shadows without a host.

And that part will not be replaced by AI."
I always thought it’s more interesting to try to explore the new potential. What can you do that you can’t do with a camera, you can’t do with photos, can’t do with films.
This is Time-Lapse.
