The process: I started doing this type of thing around 20 years ago, just for myself, with pen and paper/cardboard, but the pen would often end up ripping through or running out of ink. Nowadays I use Adobe Illustrator on iPad. I start a timer, usually for 30 or 60 seconds, and start the song, I close my eyes, and I let the pen flow and bounce around the screen to the music; the rhythm, beat, lyrics, or some combination thereof. Fast songs, or high BPM songs, often can’t be drawn for more than 30 seconds, otherwise it crashes Illustrator and/or the image just gets way too crowded. Sometimes I simply stop when it feels right. A slow-tempo song like “The Vampyre of Time and Memory” allowed me to draw for the whole duration.
When I open my eyes, I know immediately if I can or can’t do anything with the results. About 4 of 5 are immediately deleted. Sometimes I’ll try the song (or part of song) again, a couple of weeks or months later, but usually not; it is simply not vibing. If it is workable, the next step is to flip and spin and rotate the image to find the best way to begin positioning elements and colors. I try to use the Pepe palette and elements in a way that at least somewhat reflects the mood or lyrics of the song, and sometimes the music video.

In Photoshop, I create a bunch of layers and the first and foremost element to place is the eye(s). Everything stems from that choice. Next, I pick a background color, and then the rest. You can zoom in and see that each individual area is precisely colored, down to the pixel-level. And every single one of those involved a choice. Often a single little area can be decisive in the feel of the whole Pepe. So, I hope this helps these to be appreciated, and not merely seen as some random scribbles. -stay dank
