Into The Collection
Deep dives into the top generative art collections to help you confidently find and collect top quality generative art.
"Stratified landforms constructed from many small strokes of colour. The hash of each token describes a coordinate within a multidimensional generative space, locating a unique composition that lies along one of many possible longitudes." - Matt DesLauriers

Impressions: A beautiful work of art and technical feat that has been many years in the making. Meridian is one of those collections that you simply need to look at to appreciate why it's so popular. It ranks high on aesthetics and causes a resonance with many collectors due to the natural look and feel of the shapes. Like many excellent works and performances Matt DesLauriers makes an extremely complex process look easy. Well loved by collectors and continuing to gain popularity (as evidenced by steadily rising floor prices and decreasing supply), we believe this collection has a very positive outlook and would be a feather in any generative art collector's cap.
Collection evaluation:
Editors' Summary
As the name suggests, the chromacity category refers to the number of colors present in each piece, not including the palette background color.
Traits: Monochrome, Duochrome, Trichrome, Polychrome
Visual distinction: There is no clear preference, some prefer monochrome, some prefer polychrome, it's simply what catches your eye
Statistical Rarity: Monochrome (12.7%) are more rare than the others (which range in the 20-30% each)
Price Premium: None
Hidden traits: None
The Palette and Style categories both impact the color schemes and general theme of the pieces. Style pieces tend to be more distinct, with unique traits such as Newspaper which has blurred rectangles throughout the image. Interestingly, all Polychrome type Chromacity pieces are either Prismatic or Gouache style and all fall into the Other palette. This example demonstrates that there is little overlap between Palette and Style, so we treat palette and style as one large category, although there are a small number of exceptions.
Traits: There are 22 Palettes and 13 Styles. Please refer to an exchange for the full list Visual distinction: Please see our favorite Palettes / Styles showcased below, but we recognize there are many others that are visually appealing and this should be individualized. Our Palette choices were Cave, Moraine, and Glacier and our Style choices were Lino, Prime, and Charcoal. Statistical Rarity (Palette): No significant rarities, range from 15 to 27 pieces in each Palette. Statistical Rarity (Style): Charcoal, Topographic, Prime all have < 10 pieces, Newsprint and Invert have < 20. These rare Styles command a (sometimes significant) price premium Price premium: Please refer to Artacle for the latest price premiums. In general, the highest prices have gone to the rare Style traits (e.g. Charcoal). Many of these are also some of the most visually appealing pieces. Hidden traits: None that are collected
We don't know the technical changes driving the visual distinction in the Structure category, but one can see more context and lines in the background when the Structure has a Variable trait (rather than Uniform). This creates a textured look and feel to the pieces.
Traits: Structure, Variable Visual distinction: We prefer Variable to Uniform Statistical Rarity: ~20% of the collection has Variable Structure Price Premium: Variable holds a price premium Hidden traits: None that are collected
Zoom refers to how close or far the landscapes appear in each image.
Traits: Close, Medium, Far Visual distinction: No clear preferences amongst collectors. For example, Astam prefers Far while J_poz prefers Close Statistical Rarity: None, each trait makes up between 32% and 36% of the collection Price Premium: None Hidden traits: None
