Splotches (left) vs. without on the Koten Palette (grey background subset)
Splotches (left) vs. without on the Ink and Xuan paper Palette
Splotches are very faint, well splotches, on the background of the palette. They add a nice texture and additional dimension to the pieces. Splotches make up ~30% of the collection, but there is no significant price premium.
Emergent properties
Vermillion Bird
Intrepid
Hong Bao
Smoke and Fire
Porcelian Vase
Category: Palette
Palette refers to the color scheme of the pieces. Memories of Qilin brings a unique style and feel to these palettes, likely driven by the East Asian inspiration of the collection. Also unique is the use of patterns intermixed with solid blocks of colors.
In Memories many palettes have different colored backgrounds within the palette, adding additional collectability.
We have highlighted some of the palettes we find most visually appealing below and throughout this Deca gallery. At the bottom of this document we have a full list of the different colored backgrounds for each palette, we suggest you take a look and see what strikes your eye the most.
Price wise, certain palettes stand above the others. Notably, Smoke and Fire and Vermillion Bird, which are both statistically rare and have unique visuals.
Beyond that there haven't been too many clear winners, and as we'll show below the emergent properties tend to drive a lot of collectibility and popularity, which tend to cross over palettes.

Episode 4: Memories of Qilin by Emily Xie
"Memories of Qilin is inspired by traditional East Asian art. It channels the sense of movement and fluidity found in classical Chinese brushwork, while drawing from the colors, patterns, and forms of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The series explores elements of folklore, evoking the mythological imagery of dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and mountains. The title references a fabled chimerical beast found throughout East Asian mythology (while the qilin is its Chinese name, it is also known in Korea as the girin and Japan as the kirin) that represents prosperity and luck.Viewers are invited to interpret elusive forms that verge on representation. As with the stories passed on through generations, each piece is imagined, organic, and ever-in-flux." - Emily Xie

One of the most interesting features of Memories is the emergent properties and your mind fills, often reminding us of animals and natural shapes. We believe there is significant opportunity in finding these pieces as they are often undervalued by collectors primarily on categories or statistical rarity.
To highlight this point, below are a few of the emergent properties that caught our eye. Notice the diversity of Palettes these outputs come from, and that most are in the Sweep Composition Type, which is by far the most common.
We'd love for you to share other emergent properties, send us some and we'll include them in our gallery and give you credit for the find!

Complexity is subtle and appears to influence the number of curves and turns in the shapes that emerge. Looking at the examples below, you can see as complexity increases the different contours overlap more with more intricate connections, most easily visible when colors and patterns overlap.
Low complexity is more statistically rare making up ~12% of the collection. Low complexity is also correlated with the Flock composition type. Otherwise there are no significant visual, price, or rarity differences amongst the complexity traits.
Composition is a driving factor in the visual output of the collection. The composition type appears to determine where within the palette the image appears, as well as how broadly or narrowly the digital brush stroke touches the canvas.
The Focal type, which carries a significant price premium, tends to have consolidated images in the center of the palette, resulting in many emergent properties that we'll discuss below. Unsurprisingly, the focal type are all low Complexity. Focal make up ~10% of the collection.
Flock, the most rare type with only 24 (2%) in the collection, also carries a price premium and results in interesting patterns that tend to coalesce then diffuse, often taking up the whole palette.
Offset similarly broadly impacts the palettes, but is often off center, resulting in a feeling such that the piece may be running out of the frame. Offset make up ~12% of the collection.
Finally the sweep composition, the most common (75%) but also the one with the most emergent properties. Sweep composition pieces tend to be similar to Focal in that the image stays near the center of the palette, but have broader strokes that lead to very interesting outputs.

Aesthetics - This is where Memories excels. The visuals are extremely well done with a wonderful blend of colors and patterns combined with imagery that keeps you looking for more
Artist - We find Emily to be a very charismatic and engaging artist. She clearly knows how to develop her community, which bodes well for her collectors.
Holders - There is a wide range of holders who are known to be well regarded and influential, including the well known artist Thomas Lin Pederson and notable collectors such as DC Investor, Blockbird, and FlamingoDAO to name a few.
Sentiment - Consistently positive, both in the quality and quantity of sentiment, which has lasted the test of time,
Collection breadth - Another area where Memories excels. The collection has an impressive range of outputs that feel unique, yet it's clear that they are all from the same code. Masterfully done.
Historic significance - too early to say, but given how early we are in the long form generative art NFT journey and the unique style employed by Emily, we think this has potential to influence subsequent works
Price action - price has continued to rise despite major fluctuations in macro conditions, and the number of listings continue to drop, all indicating the market believes this project has long term potential
