Episode 5: Archetype by Kjetil Golid
Archetype explores the use of repetition as a counterweight to unruly, random structures. As each single component look chaotic alone, the repetition brings along a sense of intentionality, ultimately resulting in a complex, yet satisfying expression. - Kjetil Golid

Framed is simply whether or not there is a frame outside of the piece. As you can see below, framed makes an aesthetic difference, but more importantly there are only 25 (4%) and therefore framed pieces hold a significant price premium.

Layout describes how the original rectangle is partitioned. On one extreme is "Order" which has only one section that is then evenly subdivided. On the end is "Chaos" where there are many more sections resulting in more randomness. "Balance" results in moderately sized sections and resulting color, shape, and shade fill-ins

Palette refer to the color scheme from which the shapes may be filled. Notably, not all of the possible colors within a palette may be filled into the piece, resulting in interesting ways one can collect.
There are 42 palettes. 3 of the palettes only have 1 piece in this collection, and the most is 36. Below are a few of our favorites.

One of the more impactful categories, scene dictates whether you see a 2D, flat image vs. a corner vs. a full cube.
There are only 27 Corners (4.5%) and 10 Cubes (1.6%), making them ultra rare. Combined with the aesthetic beauty of these variants, it's not surprising they command a significant price premium, if you can even find one for sale.
Shading refers to the amount of shade on the two visible sides of each shape in the image. The most obvious is Noon which has shading on all visible sides, and creates a 3D look to the shapes. On the other end of the spectrum is Bright, which does not have any shade.
Morning and Evening each have shade on one side of each visible image, and Bright Morning and Bright Evening have a lower opacity shade on one side (it's subtle).
Notably, Corner and Cube type scenes can only have Bright, Bright Morning, or Bright Evening shading.

There are many traits in Archetype that are not reflected in the metadata. Kjetil Golid himself pointed out a bunch of these in his article on Archetype. Below are a few that we believe could easily be collected against, and in fact many of these are (most notably monochrome)
Monochrome - pieces where only one color emerges
"No-chrome" - pieces where colors only emerge in structures "below" the surface (left) or not at all (right)
Noon (left) vs. Bright (right) on the Green Spider palette
Bright Evening (left) vs. Bright (right) on Corner scenes
Collection evaluation:
Aesthetics - The aesthetics of Archetype are absolutely fantastic. In particular, Golid is a master at combining color palettes and distributing them in a way that captivates the eye. This is where this collection stands above many others, and with 42 different color palettes Archetype clearly had an influence on the aesthetics on future works (e.g. Factura).
Artist - Golid is mysterious yet approachable at the same time, toeing the line between being available and helpful to his fans and collectors while still maintaining his privacy amongst his newfound fame. He is also clearly very involved in the generative art community and openly helps others and open sources his code. We believe his combination of availability and being true to his self is a wonderful mix and bodes well for the long-term.
Holders - There is a wide range of Archetype holders who are known to be well regarded and influential, including the well known DC Investor and FlamingoDAO amongst many others..
Sentiment - Archetype is widely considered a blue chip project and had a lot of attention early on, and deservedly so.
Collection breadth - Echoing some of the points on the aesthetics, Golid's use of 42 different palettes combined with the complex range of outputs from the algorithm results in a very broad collection that is still easily recognized as being unified within Archetype.
Historic significance - We believe this project will have historic significance. Some argue Archetype really popularized the
Price action - Price action has consistently been strong with huge booms during the "Artblocks Summer" of 2021 and finding a solid floor during the bear market of 2022.
The Algorithm: Archetype uses a simple principle - what happens if you take a rectangle and partition it multiple times in different ways? This rectangular partitioning is deceptively simple because it can result in a wide range of outputs.
