Episode 6: Ringers by Dmitri Cherniak
There are an almost infinite number of ways to wrap a string around a set of pegs. On the surface it may seem like a simple concept but prepare to be surprised and delighted at the variety of combinations the algorithm can produce. Each output from 'Ringers' is derived from a unique transaction hash and generated in Javascript in the browser. Feature variations include peg count, sizing, layout, wrap orientation, and a few colorful flourishes for good measure. - Dmitri Cherniak

One of the wonderful parts of this collection is how many emergent properties there are. The most famous is "The Goose" in the bottom right, but if you scroll through you'll find many familiar shapes. Tweet us your favorites and we'll add them to the gallery with your name!
Size can be small or regular and refers to the size of the grid and therefore the size of the overall image. 36 out of 1000 are the small type, which carries a significant price premium due to rarity and aesthetics.
Small (left) vs. regular (right) on the red background
Peg style is simply whether some pegs are a solid circle or a bullseye. Bullseye are much more rare with only 75, and command a significant price premium. Of note, not all the bullseye pegs have the same # of concentric circles.
Bullseye peg style. Notice the yellow bullseye has can have differing concentric circles and center point sizes.
Peg layout determines the size of the grid (e.g. 2x2, 3x3, etc.). Tiled layouts are not symmetric and follow a predictable pattern (see below). Recursive layouts are not symmetric and are a bit more chaotic, resulting in interesting shapes once the strings have been placed and filled in. There is no clear price premium based on peg layout. Note that the peg for each grid layout may not be visible.
Symmetric peg layouts, from top L to bottom R - 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6 (only 3 of these!)
Tiled peg layout - 3,2 (left) and 2,3 (right). Each number corresponds to the number of pegs in the far left column then alternates.
Recursive peg layout - interesting chaotic patterns emerge
A more subtle trait category, extra color refers to the presence and color of a peg colored differently than the others in the piece. The extra color can be the same as the background or body color. 15.5% of the collection do have an extra color. Rarity and aesthetics result in a price premium, with Blue (28 total) > Green (4 total) > Red (123 total). Of note, every non black background Ringer has a yellow peg.
Blue - green - red extra colors
Body refers to the color of the shape created by the strings looping around the pegs. Similar to Background, there is a clear visual impact on the color and non-white colors command a significant premium due to aesthetics and rarity
Green - there are only 2 of these ultra rare background
Red - there are 54 in total of these gorgeous pieces
Yellow - there are 68 pieces with yellow backgrounds. They are striking!
Beige - there are 47 pieces with yellow backgrounds. The color is subtle yet effective.
Blue - only 11 of these calming backgrounds exist
Black - Only 16 of this beautiful background exist and they create sharp, captivating contrasts
White - The most common and classic Ringer background
The background category determines the color of the background. This category creates a clear visual distinction and many of the colors are rare, resulting in significant demand for non-white backgrounds.
