Fueled by inspiration, you poured blood, sweat, and tears into manifesting what had formed in your mind's eye.

How many days have passed?  How much sleep did you lose?

Immersed in the creative flow, time loses meaning.  It's catching up with you now.  Fast.  You sit back and take a deep breath.  The adrenaline coursing through you fades, no longer needed, and fatigue starts to wash over you.

Sleep approaches.  You offer no resistance.  Elation remains as you start to drift off - satisfied with the genesis of your creation, knowing that it exists for all the cosmos to enjoy.

In the final moments of wakefulness, you realize that the cost of your creation isn't just time or blood, sweat, and tears - it's something more.  

A part of _you_ is in it.  Your life.  Your energy.  Your soul.

Consciousness fades and you begin to dream.

This is the second photo in this series of editions showcasing the images that made me want to pursue photography as a fine art.  It captures the intersection of 7th and Hill early on a Sunday morning.  The sun cuts through the buildings creating a dramatic contrast between the darkened foreground and the illuminated vanishing point on the horizon.  As I continue to grow as a photographer, this photo remains as my primary example of how to capture the peace of an early morning in the city.

I took this photograph while walking with my family through Downtown Los Angeles.  We were heading down Broadway to go to Grand Park for an Easter celebration when I spotted this collage on a boarded up window.

When you take the images from the advertisements as a composition in itself, you see a black woman tearing her way through to be seen, and next to her are the words “role model”.  When you take away the connection to the artist and model in the advertisements, we are left with a symbol for where we are as a society.    

Over the last two years, women of color have done the work to tear through the layers that would cover them up, and in doing so are beginning to be accepted as role models making room for new voices to be heard, new art to be seen, and new ideas to come to life.  

However, just like a city wall, progress can be pasted over with the next wave of advertisements, distractions, and redirections back to the previous worldview.  Communities of allies must come together to continue to clear the way for women of color.   

This piece is a tribute to my wife and all other women of color who have broken barriers and have become examples for others to follow.

This photo is one of the images that made me want to pursue photography as a fine art. It captures a specific moment while waiting at the intersection of 5th and Broadway, but more than that, it represents the energy of Downtown Los Angeles at that time.  As I have developed as a photographer, I continue to come back to this photo as the standard for how to capture intersections as both a personal experience and an embodiment of the city as a whole.   

For the viewer, the photo is immersive.  They are placed on the sidewalk through a first person perspective.  Their focus may jump from the signs in front of them to the person crossing on the opposite side of the street. They may find themselves staring at the patterns of the windows or peering down 5th.  By being placed in my shoes at this intersection, the viewer is given the opportunity to experience what Downtown Los Angeles felt like in 2016.
