This soothed me in my loneliness and gave me a deep love for the chaotic idiosyncrasies of analog TV visuals.

La Muerte Que Da La Vida

Inspired by Santa Muerte and my first 6 months in Mexico City. RUnderstanding death has always been an interest of mine as long as I can remember, probably because of coming face to face with it so often from a young age. However, since my mother's suicide a few years ago, I've been in deep mourning. It has been a complex journey unpacking the emotions around when an abuser - who I did love because she was my mother and I was raised very protestant Christian - dies. There is relief of no more suffering knowing she was tortured herself but sorrow for the redemption you hope for but will never experience.  

A huge point of healing for me is the understanding and acceptance of death in Mexican culture as part of life contrasted against the United States antiseptic and suppressive death industrial complex. One figure I see around Mexico City a lot is Santa Muerte. While her worship is controversial at best, for me as someone who has lost their mother I find comfort in the figure of death as a woman as a symbol as the title says "Death that gives Life".

Neo-Noir Cycle is a collection by Empress Trash for her Makersplace Artist in Residency combining AI + Glitch processes to interpret traditional female archetypes in an expression of the multifaceted power of light and dark feminine energy. The seven archetypes explored: The Maiden, The Lover, The Mother, The Huntress, The Mystic, The Queen, and The Crone.

As MakersPlace’s first official Artist in Residence Drop, one work from the Neo-Noir Cycle series will be released every Tuesday, beginning on August 8, 2023. All 7 of the 1/1 works will be offered in an auction format with reserves of 0.333 ETH each and minted on the creator’s own Manifold contract. For the duration of the residency, these will be the only new works by Empress Trash released on the ETH blockchain.

A feminine archetype cycle represents a universal and symbolic blueprint of essential qualities and traits traditionally associated with femininity. It centers around the journey and development of a female character, often symbolizing aspects of femininity, womanhood, and the natural world. It emphasizes the cyclical nature of life, growth, and renewal. It transcends cultural and historical boundaries, embodying deep-rooted aspects of womanhood that evoke emotions, behaviors, and ideals commonly attributed to feminine energy. These archetypes serve as powerful and timeless symbols, influencing narratives, art, and cultural perceptions of femininity throughout the ages.

This is similar but differs from the hero cycle, also known as the hero's journey as popularized by Joseph Campbell, which usually follows the adventures of a central male character who sets forth on a quest or mission. As he is called to adventure, he crosses the threshold into the unknown, facing trials and challenges that test his resilience and character. Once the journey is complete, the hero returns to his ordinary world, enriched with newfound gifts and experiences, ready to use them for the betterment of his community and the world at large.

In essence, both cycles delve into the essence of human experiences, reflecting different aspects of our nature and the diverse roles that make us who we are. The feminine archetype cycle sheds light on the power of intuition, empathy, and emotional depth, while the hero cycle emphasizes bravery, perseverance, and self-discovery. Together when appreciated in balance, they form captivating storytelling frameworks that resonate with the collective consciousness and offer profound insights into the human condition.

The 6th drop in the Neo-Noir Cycle - part of my Artist in Residence at Makersplace - goes live for auction on 9/12 at 11am CST.

Neo-Noir Cycle is a collection by Empress Trash for her Makersplace Artist in Residency combining AI + Glitch processes to interpret traditional female archetypes in an expression of the multifaceted power of light and dark feminine energy. The seven archetypes explored: The Maiden, The Lover, The Mother, The Huntress, The Mystic, The Queen, and The Crone.

As MakersPlace’s first official Artist in Residence Drop, one work from the Neo-Noir Cycle series will be released every Tuesday, beginning on August 8, 2023. All 7 of the 1/1 works will be offered in an auction format with reserves of 0.333 ETH each and minted on the creator’s own Manifold contract. For the duration of the residency, these will be the only new works by Empress Trash released on the ETH blockchain.

A feminine archetype cycle represents a universal and symbolic blueprint of essential qualities and traits traditionally associated with femininity. It centers around the journey and development of a female character, often symbolizing aspects of femininity, womanhood, and the natural world. It emphasizes the cyclical nature of life, growth, and renewal. It transcends cultural and historical boundaries, embodying deep-rooted aspects of womanhood that evoke emotions, behaviors, and ideals commonly attributed to feminine energy. These archetypes serve as powerful and timeless symbols, influencing narratives, art, and cultural perceptions of femininity throughout the ages.

This is similar but differs from the hero cycle, also known as the hero's journey as popularized by Joseph Campbell, which usually follows the adventures of a central male character who sets forth on a quest or mission. As he is called to adventure, he crosses the threshold into the unknown, facing trials and challenges that test his resilience and character. Once the journey is complete, the hero returns to his ordinary world, enriched with newfound gifts and experiences, ready to use them for the betterment of his community and the world at large.

In essence, both cycles delve into the essence of human experiences, reflecting different aspects of our nature and the diverse roles that make us who we are. The feminine archetype cycle sheds light on the power of intuition, empathy, and emotional depth, while the hero cycle emphasizes bravery, perseverance, and self-discovery. Together when appreciated in balance, they form captivating storytelling frameworks that resonate with the collective consciousness and offer profound insights into the human condition.

The initial idea behind The Settler’s Complacency was exploring the roots being raised in Northern Minnesota as mostly puritanical Protestant with some experiences to my less expressed indigenous side. Now that I have lived outside of the Midwest for over a decade giving space to reflect, the general memories and feelings I have for the region is that of suffering and oppression from my own traumatic experiences and from the history of indigenous genocide and exploitation of the land by European/Christian settlers.  As I dove deeper into these feelings, I started to reflect on the role of specifically white women (the majority of my heritage) on a lot of the atrocities that happened on the land I was raised. While we all are victims of generational violence in some way no matter our identity, there is a complacency I experienced - whether learned or enforced - among many white women in this region to the violence. The blind eye turned to it isn’t just for what is happening to those different than us/them, but what is happening to each other. There is an unspoken self-preserving ethos among white supremacy of “at least it’s not me” when harm is witnessed coming to others.  The masked faces are to express this complex situation - the facade kept of compliance and perfection to not be a target of violence in an attempt to separate self from what collectively we all suffer. While the energies move around the figures, they both are statuesque like old photos unmoved in denial of the ancestral memories swirling around them, but also internally writhing in their own emotions knowing their comfort and space is at the cost of others suffering.  On a personal level, the two figures represent the different cultures I was raised around - with the woman in white more prominent representing the Protestant side because it was taught to me that was the more pure and righteous side of me, while the indigenous side is more the back shrouded in a dark floral print which is a nod to the connection to nature but still covered in a European Victorian sensibility stripped of any distinctive identity to blend in with her counterpart.
