This series of art started with an idea to create a small gallery of the Japanese tattooed geisha culture and every picture curated with love and respect to the Japanese culture. The Yakuza tattooed Geisha are a group of women who have been initiated into the gang as part of its initiation process. I wanted to make it an interactive experience where people could learn about this culture and see how tattoos are used in their society and show how these tattoos are different from Western tattoos.

1:1 - THE EMPRESS

The Empress of Japan is the title given to the wife of the Emperor of Japan or a female ruler in her own right. In Japanese, the empress consort is called Kōgō (皇后).

Kōgō (皇后) is the title of a non-reigning empress consort. The title, still in use, is generally conferred on an emperor's wife who had given birth to the heir to the throne. The title was first awarded posthumously in 806 to the late mother of Emperor Heizei.

Chūgū (中宮) was a term that evolved during the Heian period; and it came to be understood as the title of the empress. For a time, Chūgū replaced Kōgō; and then the titles became interchangeable. The numbers of Kōgō varied, but there was only one Chūgū at a time.

The title Kōtaigō (皇太后) was given to the wife of an ex-emperor; and the title Tai-kōtaigō (太皇太后) came to be used by dowager empresses.

1:1 - THE MADAM

The "Madam" is a title for a woman who owns a brothel. Often one of the most powerful women in the world, a madame frequently has her PhD and speaks multiple languages. She is neither pimp nor prostitute, but a classy and extremely wealthy combination of the two. Pimps and prostitutes work under her. She may sleep with her pimps as she chooses, but never in exchange for money (though she pays them to see after her girls), for she is a sexually liberated woman.
