"Synthetic Schema" is here used to describe a representation or plan of a space that is generated through computational processes, rather than being a representation of a physically existing space.
"Synthetic" in this regard refers to something that is not naturally occurring, but rather is produced by humans, often through some form of technological process, while "schema", in a broad sense is, a representation of or theory in the form of a diagram or model of a space or structure.
Our impulse to decipher the abstract and attribute meaning to the shapes, forms and landscapes to be seen in Decagons could arguably be explained by cognitive psychology's "Gestalt Theory" which proposes that humans naturally perceive things as organised patterns and objects, a principle known as "Prägnanz". We tend to interpret and attribute meaning to information based on how we perceive it as a whole, which can apply to abstract concepts as well.
The Law of Prägnanz (Simplicity) proposes that we tend to order our experiences in a way that makes the most sense to us, that is, we perceive them in as simplified a manner as possible.
When we look at random shapes or patterns, our brain tries to make sense of it based on our previous experiences and knowledge, often resulting in the perception of a familiar object or pattern - like a face seen in a billowing cloud.
If an algorithm generates a pattern or image that our brains can interpret as having a similar structure or form to something familiar (like a building or a landmark), then we are likely to perceive it as such, even if it wasn't intentionally designed that way.
Our inherent desire to find meaning and coherence in the world around us drives these perceptions. This cognitive tendency is called "patternicity", which is the tendency to find meaningful patterns in both meaningful and meaningless data.
In the context of algorithmically generated content, this process is further influenced by the complexity and variability of the patterns the algorithms can produce.
Algorithms based on machine learning, fractals, or other complex mathematical structures can generate a wide range of forms, increasing the chances that some will resemble familiar objects or structures.
The aim of this gallery is to spotlight instances of familiarity found in a selection of my collection of Decagons and to surface the underlying significance. The interpretations presented are personal and were not predetermined or envisioned by the artist. They reflect the unique lens through which each viewer perceives the artwork, a characteristic that is integral to being confronted by works of art.
These discoveries have enriched my appreciation of the Decagon project, affirming the ability of generative art to bridge the gap between the digital and physical realms, and resonate with our real-world experiences and memories. I invite you to accompany me on an exploratory journey of co-creation, made possible through chance expressions of the Decagon algorithm.
