This design mimics traditional wood carving techniques, realised through digital fabrication. Numerous carved channels intersect with the wood grain and highlights the maple's natural beauty.

Designed to be manufactured on commonly available 2.5 Axis CNC machines, and requires only 2 setups. (Which typically makes up a large portion of a machining bill).
The machined wood is finished with a protective coating to ensure longevity, preventing it from absorbing moisture, dirt, and bad juju. We found Osmo natural oil to be great in creating amazing finishes on the maple wood. Be sure to source FSC certified wood like we do, "Your JPEGs are doing enough environmental damage already." said Karen.
This was created with generative design - a process of setting up boundary conditions for the model (i.e. load cases, geometries constraints, safety factor, etc), and letting the computer generate a number of outcomes that satisfy all conditions with as little material as possible. It is iterative process of compute-intensive calculations that results in highly organic looking geometries. Geek out here.
This design is produced using additive manufacturing. Specifically, Stereolithography (SLA), which uses UV lasers to selectively cure layers upon layers of polymer resin to build the 3D object.
The resulting prints are extremely accurate (around ± 0.01 mm) with smooth surfaces, giving the generative design bone like appearance.
The gentle cradle in the centre creates an illusion of softness through geometry, as if the brass pill is sinking into the stone. The simple form helps to accentuate the material's natural texture.
The production of this design requires more specialist CNC machines that can accurately carve out stones with water cooling system.
Travertine’s subtle veining and porous holes adds texture without causing too much distraction, so that you can concentrate on trading monkey coins.
