Mass is a shared 3D interactive space that lives on the blockchain. Everyone shares the same space, but it appears differently to each viewer and evolves in unexpected ways over time.

Mass is a surveillance machine, recording every action its owners take on-chain and communicating them back to the group through changes in the dynamic 3D compositions. But there are bugs in the code. The errors make the communication of events unreliable. The visual environment has also been constructed incorrectly and its digital objects are fragmented.

GOLD is a dynamic cryptoart series where the artworks change in response to the collection's own live market activity. The actions of GOLD collectors are part of this ever-changing artwork, where prices, levels of activity and on-chain provenance define the art itself.

How does the market affect the way we see art? Does the sale price of an NFT change our perception of it? In GOLD, market factors literally influence the appearance of the dynamic imagery. From a sale to a listing, from the amount of time an artwork is held to whether it has recently been flipped, all this data is recorded by the contract and reflected live in each GOLD piece.

GOLD is an artistic exploration of NFT market behaviour. It explores how we see in digital environments, and how market networks influence how we see. The full spectrum of possibilities for GOLD will take years to reveal.

The series is 100% on-chain - the artworks are composed and rendered directly from the blockchain - with live data streamed from an Ethereum node. Viewers can change the node by pressing 'G'.

BURNER is a dynamic cryptoart series that changes every block in response to live Ethereum gas price data. A total of 256 interconnected artworks dependent on the state of the blockchain. As Ethereum network usage increases due to price volatility, NFT sales or other factors, a more forceful artwork develops.

Gas price data is made from the competing desires, intentions and beliefs of millions of entities. Transactions on Ethereum create overwhelming amounts of information in block time, cyclically revealing unforeseen states. BURNER pictures this continuous decentralised process. The artwork is never finished, there's always a new variant.

It’s common to fetishise technology and we can easily become hooked on the network systems we use. The Ethereum blockchain is influential on our lives and this artwork tries to reveal some of its underlying behaviour through abstraction.

The image files in BURNER begin as pictures of true physical gas. They’re extruded into a third dimension, rotated and processed until they’re unrecognisable. These new forms interact differently with one another in each digital artwork.

Every BURNER has a unique base image, unique seed and 60 million potential states. Rarer ‘dark’ and ‘bright' types can have over 1 billion states. Apart from the base image, the layers are shared communally between collectors, then mixed uniquely in each piece. Slower pieces have higher rarity.

BURNER isn’t controlled by the artist, but by the Ethereum Virtual Machine and its users.

COMBINATOR

New edition in my neural net generated PFP series, exploring the splintering of identity in digital environments. Here I use colours from the newly-launched Pantone sLABS metaverse-ready palette. .

The piece is made by breeding a digital character into a separate digital environment using neural nets, sometimes multiple times. The process produces artefacts which I magnify. I then trace the contours produced by the neural net by hand. In this case I'm also following a new palette.

A series of abstracts based on in-game screengrabs. Each piece has the title of the game it’s based on. A lot of anti-NFT sentiment has been coming from gamers, so I wanted to use games as raw material for my cryptoart. I was also interested in exploring the visceral attraction of game technology. I spent many hours obliterating myself in games and these worlds still fascinate. 

Tenth in a series of abstracts based on in-game screengrabs. Each piece has the title of the game it’s based on. This piece is ripped from a supernatural action-adventure where you defeat an enemy that has corrupted reality. 

I'm interested in exploring the visceral attraction of game technology. I spent many hours losing myself in games and these worlds and characters still fascinate. 

The image starts as a screengrab. I ‘atomise’ it, filtering the image down to various coloured dots. I extrude the dots into a 3rd dimension using a light distribution mesh. Then layer multiple extrusions over each other. The original game shot is used as background and the ‘atoms’ in the foreground. Finally I run it through an AI, giving a painterly warp to details.

windows 7 is the latest piece in a series of abstract works based on the Microsoft graphical user interface of the same name. I take my own previous artworks, extrude the images into a third dimension then stretch and warp them into new forms. These forms are layered over each other like windows. 

The windows series comes from the idea that screen objects are not separate from the material world, because they have materiality in their code. The dichotomy between the physical and digital is a false one. Computers represent material reality in new ways and we see differently as a result. Screens displaying these objects are simply a different kind of window.

A dynamic edition where all the editions are the same, but each one unique and different from the others at any given time. They change constantly forever.

TThe dynamic changes are hardly perceptible, calling into question the reliability of memory, perception and the stability of identity.

The artworks are made from elements of previous pieces in my PFP series plus new elements. The PFP series uses neural networks and additive digital painting to explore the splintering of identity in digital environments. Here the neural net imagery is subject to constant change, extending the original concept into time.

First in a new series of AI ‘collaborations’. I’m exploring the idea of interpretation of meaning in the computer age. Humans interpret the meaning of the present moment in relation to prior knowledge, which can lead to confusion. AI compounds the problem.

In this work, various AI models are fed short phrases and interpret the text according to prior databases of images they have learnt. Using VQGAN-CLIP, the output is a predictably surreal amalgamation of the input words. I choose the words and generate this output, then try to degrade any figurative or compositional sense in the resulting images, by eye using Photoshop.

All the pieces in this series will share the title ‘descentraland’. Gradient descent is a process commonly used by AI to arrive at an image output which matches the input target. With some pieces in this series the AI model doesn’t complete a full run by gradient descent, so its interpretation is left unfinished.

The artwork brings together a community, but also distances them from each other. It’s an abstract reimagining of our shared online environment. A system stripped of its agency to condition behaviour. A broken structure that resists fixed readings and interpretations.
