Richter is the second collaboration of Richard Nadler and Leander Herzog, following their first project called Gerhard. A generative animation based on multiple layers of color and data, mixed, moved and painted over in realtime. Some fragments stick to the canvas while others get discarded to leave the existing layers visible, allowing a complex surface to emerge and build up over time.
 
Richter works with data from 4 of 24 highres images, 30mb in total. This is the maximum size fxhash allows for a project and three times more than Gerhard. Richard Nadler created stunning new textures, enabling more variation in composition and detail to emerge at much higher resolution. Leander Herzog created the code for the interplay between the layers, motion and interactions. Richter elevates the approach from Gerhard with new methods for the realtime rendering process and new features like offline-first caching. Both artists use different tools and are not aware of the details of each others process, meeting through the interface of pixels as data.
 
Richter is featured in the exhibition "Generative Abstraction" at Expanded.art in Berlin.

Returns is an offline-first PWA and an interactive SVG. It combines the joy of interaction, digital color and minimalist sculpture with the potential of a long running, continuously unique visual. Based on “Shipping” from 2016, it is inspired by Anne Truitt, Ugo Rondinone, Imi Knoebel, Kelly Ellsworth and many others.

A subdivision slices the viewport influenced by width, height and depth. Corners are cut by replacing them with two new points, pulled towards each other along the edges. Shapes are “rounded" by repeating this step, keeping the new points close together. As colors change, so do the relations between shapes, even if geometry changes at a slower pace. New compositions are created on click or after a timeout. This progress over time allows for infinite iterations within the space of each token. It is the promise of a seeded starting point, plus the potential for unlimited new and unique iterations and states over time.

Haystacks (2022) is an open edition of still images from a constantly evolving, interactive artwork by Leander Herzog in collaboration with playrecordmint for the exhibition DYOR at Kunsthalle Zürich.

Data from a computer vision system is drawn onto the digital canvas, generating a dense composition that reflects the patterns of visitors’ movements. Haystacks creates a visual manifestation of the audience - the bodies - that pass physically in front of the interactive work. The marks then dissolve into a painterly surface texture enabled by the medium’s pixellation. The direct transfer of motion to marks on a surface is inspired by Rudolf Stingel’s works with metallic Celotex insulation panels: by inviting viewers to make their own marks on the surfaces, he removes artistic privilege from the individual and hands it over to the collective.

playrecordmint.xyz is a screen and sensor setup that allows artists to invite an audience on site to co-author animated sequences or still images within an artwork, which they can then mint as a NFT. playrecordmint partners with artists to conduct interactive experiments, bridging physically embodied interaction and the creation of digital artifacts on the blockchain.

Chrome is a 128 channel realtime animation, coordinated by universal time (UTC). It emerges from a continuous linear motion, interrupted by a choreography between rhythm and random. Every channel is offset one additional second into the future, based on the token id assigned by the custom smart contract. This relation becomes visible when multiple channels are running in a shared space. Compositions emerge and evolve at various regular intervals, without ever repeating. Once per hour the synchronization stops and all channels act individually, before they transition back to coordination.

Heatsink is a realtime animation, built with javascript and WebGL. It explores ratios, rhythm and repetition as compositional method. It is based on “DOM1”, its conceptual predecessor that’s built on the browser’s document object model, but elevates the monochrome minimalism to a colorful 3d space. Heatsink is an ongoing search for style - to develop distinct proportions and relations - beyond color palettes or formal patterns.  

 Inspired by minimalist sculpture, modernist architecture and contemporary digital artists, such as Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Walter de Maria, Agnes Martin, Daniel Buren, Anne Truitt, Imi Knöbel, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le corbusier, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Wolfgang Weingart, Ryoji Ideka, and Kjetil Golid.
