Matthieu Bessudo
The creator of @cel_mates and co-founder of @dudesfactory
“Matthieu Bessudo, or mcbess as he is known creatively, is one of the most interesting illustrator and character creators working today. Hailing from Cannes in the South of France but now based in London, he has risen up the ranks of animation, beginning at The Mill and now working independently on a number of illustration projects.”
“Stylistically, Bessudo’s illustrations are characterised by humanesque creatures with elongated arms and legs, devoid of defined wrists or ankles. They also have somewhat distorted cartoon-like proportions within their faces and animalistic features. Together these elements make his work instantly recognisable, but this wasn’t necessarily something he intended.”
“A far cry from his work on Sigg Jones, Bessudo's illustrations offer a more home-grown feel, often featuring a stand-in for the artist, complete with long hair and shaggy beard. A musician as well as a visual artist, Bessudo's passion for music fuels his graphic output. His illustrations feature amplifier worship, musician types with feral grins and cartoonish instruments and a lot of rock and roll excess usually played out amidst forests and meadows.”
“Just as in Wood, many of McBess’ illustrations are populated with versions of real people. He says, ’My illustration acts as a journal. The main guy is me and the one with the long hair is my brother, and my mates are in there too.”

Mcbess (Matthieu Bessudo; born July 5, 1984), is a French illustrator living in London. His style is a mix of influences such as Fleischer Studios' old cartoons he updates by using contemporary shapes, symbols, and types. Mcbess's drawings often present himself at the center of a surrealist world filled with food and musical references, such as amps, guitars and records. Mcbess is also a musician in the bands "The Dead Pirates,” and “Mcbaise.”

MEDIA WRITE-UPS
"A high point has been people coming up to me and telling me that I was the reason they started drawing" - Mcbess
“My aim is to bring my imagination to life, I’ve been drawing the same characters for seven or so years now. I don’t know how far I can push things but, because I’ve been drawing things that are close to me, it’s natural to want to bring some of them to life. In the end the goal is to give depth to everything that I do, so that it’s not just a book with drawing, or a CD with music on it. But will be linked to something way bigger.” - Mcbess
As well as his illustrations Bessudo is currently working on a number of different commercial projects, and recently worked with the Dudes Factory in Berlin customising a bicycle and creating a range of T-shirts. His band’s first album is due out this Christmas, and he has another solo exhibition lined up in Paris next spring. On top of this he is also working on his first live action film.

“The characters featured are drawn in his signature style and animated flawlessly. They might remind you a bit of the Gorillaz Feel Good Inc. video, which I must say is about the best company to be in. The whole piece is visually beautiful in its reduced colour palette and soft shadows, and at the same time it tells a cool story that ties in with the music perfectly.”

“McBess was ideal for this campaign. His bold, monochromatic style suits Guinness’ distinct aesthetic and his quirky, interesting characters playfully brought the campaign idea to life. We wanted an illustrator who could imaginatively capture and celebrate all of the unique characters you’ll meet over a pint or two of Guinness on St.Patrick’s Day.”
