You are on the shore of a lake, waiting for the festival to begin. A soft wind blows, and the remains of a storm are passing away.

In art school, I discovered and fell in love with impressionist art. The style of capturing the essence of a scene with bold marks and colors captured my creative curiosity. Throughout my life, I've had a spot in my heart for this movement.

As I began my generative art journey, I looked back at these artists, wondering if I could capture the feeling of an impressionist masterpiece with code. Over time and with experimentation, I've developed and honed my algorithms to closely mimic true brush strokes and applied color mixing techniques to realistically mimic paint mixing.

Lake Festival is the culmination of my work over the past year to capture impressionism on a 2D JavaScript canvas. Through randomness, this piece can explore the styles and moods of several impressionist masters with different paint mixes, brush strokes, and atmospheric conditions. Iterations range the gamut from hope and joy to melancholy and ominous.

This work is best viewed on a desktop or laptop in a Chromium browser. Due to differences in browser rendering, the same work may have slight differences in the rendering of some brush strokes.

A generative painting based on abstract expressionism and the action paintings of Jackson Pollock.

Several different flow fields are used to create paths which are then painted in one of four different styles (pastel, paint, Pollock, black+gold). Additional features affect the background, path length + angles, level of detail, and mess (drips and splats). 

NOTES: 
- Some variations of the Pollock style may appear slightly different between browsers, but will render consistently in the same browser. 
- On slower devices, it may take some time to being drawing due to the background rendering.

I love being in nature and impressionistic paintings. Deep Forest is my latest attempt to combine them with JavaScript. The editions will range from open, sparse forests to lush, dense, leafy wonderlands. Fall editions may render as Klimpt-style birch forests - my original inspiration for this work.

Abstract, distorted compositions using symbols from the original IBM VGA codepage 437 character set. The symbols were created in code as bitmaps, scaled, and then drawn onto the canvas. The shading is based on the characters and sets from ANSI and ASCII art styles. 

There are 4 main types of outputs:
- Abstracts, 50%
- Random characters, 25%
- One of 16 preset character layouts, 25%
- One of 16 custom symbol PFP styles that will be 10% of the total outputs

For abstracts, there are several main styles created from layering different base shapes: circles, filled circles, rectangles, flow field lines, and rain-like streaks.

Color combinations include monochromatic, green or amber, dark mode, and multicolor.

A river meandering over a noise-based landscape. A line is drawn either horizontally, vertically, or more rarely, a ring. Time progresses for 1,000 iterations as the line travels, bends, and splits. 

There is a lot of variation on the line quality - from thin and controlled, to chunky and chaotic. It's a lot of fun to watch it run and see where it ends up.

Ocean waves in calm or stormy skies. Spray, and the occasional buoy passes by.

Large and rolling waves are generated at the back and get more turbulent as they get closer to the viewer. A stripe of sunlight varies in position from towards the back to the front. The highest waves create spray. Everyone once and a while, a buoy or two (or more!) will pass by. The background color is related to the buoy color to make it more harmonious.

The first release from my experiments with terrain generation. 

Method: A quadtree is created from N number of randomly generated points. For each rectangle in the tree, particle points are created based on poisson disc sampling. The movement of these particles along the terrain + noise field is drawn with my rake-stroke method. The color of the rake-stroke is based on the noise value at the origin along with some other variability.

The loading time of the piece will be longer for some variations.

Simulating an impressionist painting with a cubist layout. This is a long-running piece that can take up to 3 or more minutes to complete.

- A quadtree is constructed from a variable distant poisson disc sample points on a noise field
- For each square in the quadtree ...
- Pick a random color or grey based on 3d noise (x, y, and time)
- New set of poisson disc sampled points are distributed based on 3d noise (x, y, and time)
- Points are used for brief particle simulation
- Path of those points are drawn with a brushstroke
- Once all of the squares are drawn, the time value increments and it loops back for another layer 10 times

Abstract, non-square(!) composition based on textural strokes and noise. There are a lot of possible combinations with all of the features! 50% chance of two different palette sets. 50% chance to have a brush textured background, and a 50% chance of it being horizontal or vertical. The quadtree rectangles are based on poisson disc sampling based on a simplex noise field. 90% of the compositions will be smaller boxes, and 10% will be large. For each box, there is a 10% chance that it will be oriented opposite of the rest.

A playful piece that recreates the look of a natural media drawing. Particles plotted over a Clifford or Jong attractor are rendered with a crayon-like effect. A poisson disc field is generated with the same attractor function and rendered as a watercolor-like background. Three different coloring modes are possible with about 100 different palettes. A staggering amount of variation is possible for each unique edition.

A generative, impressionist painting of a small grove of trees in one of the four seasons. In spring and summer, flowers bloom in the meadow. A rare variation will create a charcoal drawing on white or black paper. Super rare will create a lighted winter scene that may have a moon behind the tree.

"Break Free" is about escaping from barriers and limits. The sweeping arcs and bold strokes contrast with the regular pattern of lines and circles as they spin outward, breaking the borders that seek to confine them. 

Notes:
- The rendered image size is 2318 x 3000px
- The image may take longer than 1 minute to render

Controls:
- Press' s' to save a screenshot of the canvas.
- Press 'p' to pause and resume.

High-resolution outputs:
- Add &scale=# to the end of the URL to render a variation (not 1:1). The default scale is 3. Larger scales will take longer to render.

Screen saver mode:
- Add &showPoints=true to the end of the URL
- To change the number of points, add &numPoints=100 to the end of the URL. The more points, the slower the sketch will run.
