Grundtvigs Kirke bathed in Summer morning light.  

A relatively new Church from Denmark that was completed in 1940, combining the modern geometric forms of Brick Expressionism and classical vertical of Gothic architecture, the Grundtvigs Kirke took the architect’s family 3 generations to complete.

The Grundtvigs Kirke is often seen in natural daylight, but the chandeliers add another layer of complexity to the scene. What I love about its interior is the harmony between daylight and ambient light.

Observing a three-dimensional space in its entirety gives us a perspective beyond what the eye can see. It breaks us from reality, plays with our perception of shape and form, and creates a sense of another world.

'Adversity gives rise to resilience'

Disaster struck Ely Cathedral on 13 February 1322, when the Norman central tower collapsed. Unable to restore to its original state due to weak foundations, firmer foundations were found further out from the original pillars, and from this evolved the idea of building an octagon surmounted by a lantern. 

To avoid the pillars from collapsing inwards, the octagonal stone tower has eight internal arches, each supporting an amazing timber fan-vaulted roof. The roof is made of a complex wooden structure covered in lead weighing 400 tons. This masterpiece of medieval engineering took 18 years to build and has stood for centuries.

Today, the Octagon Tower stands as a symbol of strength and resilience, reminding us that even in the face of challenges, it is possible to create something beautiful and enduring."

Wells Cathedral in Somerset, England is an architectural marvel that was the first cathedral in the country to be entirely planned and built in the Gothic style. The idea for this revolutionary architectural style was brought to England by Bishop Reginald de Bohun from France, and the construction of the cathedral began around 1175. 

However, in the 13th century, the original central tower of the cathedral was damaged in an earthquake and had to be rebuilt, a process that took decades to complete. Cracks later appeared in the new tower, potentially due to its weight being too much for the foundation. To address this issue, the distinctive scissor arches that Wells Cathedral is known for were added between 1338 and 1348 to support the weight of the tower.

This artwork features the entirety of the nave of Wells Cathedral, from the entrance to the altar, capturing the beauty and grandeur of the cathedral and allow viewers to experience its full splendour.

Bath Abbey on a cloudy spring afternoon. 

It's a rare occasion that I get to photograph churches outside of opening hours and this was no exception. As empty as it looks, Bath Abbey was actually packed with visitors. During the 3 hours of my visit, I captured every corner of the building, capturing little pockets of empty space among all the hustle and bustle of visiting hours. With over 40 hours of post-editing, stitching together multiple images, I managed to make the crowds disappear. 

Since taking this photo, Bath Abbey has undergone a major renovation and many of the ornate pews have been removed. I'm glad that I managed to take the photograph before these changes, and I look forward to seeing the space with its fresh new look.

Ely Cathedral's quire is a prime example of Early English Gothic architecture, constructed in the 13th century, the space features a tall arcade of pointed arches, which supports the triforium and clerestory levels. The vaults, similar to those in the nave, are ribbed and feature ornate bosses at their intersections. 

This artwork features the entirety of the quire of Ely Cathedral. It is made of 45 images, 9 tiles of HDR merged 42mp images.

Part of a triptych of St Paul's Cathedral, London, this view from the Nave was taken on an autumn night. Each area of the Cathedral celebrates a different design tradition, complimenting one another seamlessly. The Nave of St Paul's maintains Christopher Wren's original design, bright Portland Stone made more beautiful with imposing, ornate carvings.
The chandeliers brighten the space evenly, while the lack of deep shadows creates minimalist elegance.

Ely Cathedral's Quire bathed in beautiful Winter light.

Highly regarded by historians and architects from all over the world for its beauty and size, Ely Cathedral is widely acknowledged as ‘one of the wonders of the Medieval world’. Visible for miles around, the Cathedral is often referred to as ‘The Ship of the Fens’. 

The present building dates from 1081 and is a remarkable example of both Romanesque and Norman architecture. 

This part is also the former site of the shrine of St Etheldreda. As inscribed on the paving stone. 'Here stood the Shrine of Etheldreda. Saint and Queen who founded this house. AD 673.'

Southwark Cathedral is one of London’s hidden architectural gems. Next to the bustling Borough Market and nestled between London’s skyscrapers, this beloved Cathedral is a stone’s throw from the Shard and Shakespeare’s Globe. This photo was taken during London Fashion Week. All of the seating was removed for the show, and I managed to capture the interior before the seats were returned. It is unusual to see the space so empty.

This artwork is dedicated to Doorkins Magnificat, the late resident Cathedral Cat. For 12 years, both the staff and visitors adored him, and they still miss him today. You can see Doorkins near the altar, walking into the light.

Southwark Cathedral is one of London’s hidden architectural gems, next door to the bustling Borough Market and nestled between London’s skyscrapers. This photo is taken during a wintry candlelit evening. Event openings like these are rare, and they are great opportunities to see a public space in a very different light. I think the incandescent tones from the candles and the black deep shadows make this a challenging scene to photograph but also rendered a unique ambience.
