Scarabs Represented Resurrection in Ancient Egypt
Because of the dung beetle's significance in ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle came to represent the eternal cycle of life. Like the dung beetle's revolving ball, the scarab became a symbol of birth, life, death, and resurrection.

The water is almost all gone now.

When the wet season leaves and all that remains are receding puddles.  These days are like the in-between. When the water is not quite gone but there is no more rain, no more growth and a stillness falls on the landscape...

Made in wild grasses that grow near my home in the wet season.
A time of abundant growth and renewal. But soon the grasses will die and be burnt to make way and make ready for next years rain. And so the cycle continues.

1000 Tiny Cuts No.3

I grew up by the salt water - it lived on my skin and in my hair.
But recently we moved to the fresh water, to rivers and paperbark tress and I still miss the salt.
I miss being clammy at the end of the day and having grit and sand under my fingernails and there are lots of days when I long for the waves and to see crocodiles bobbing up and down in the rhythm of the open sea.

But for now I'll take heart that in the words of Paulo Coelho.
“I understand that everything is connected, that all roads meet, and that all rivers flow into the same sea.” 



Rivers to the Sea

I have spent most of my life by the warm salty seas of Northern Australia.  
Once when I was very small my family and I watched a turtle lay her eggs in the sand not too far from this spot. 
It felt full circle to return here with my own children. 

We only missed these turtles hatching by a couple of nights, the egg shells were still resting on the sand.
Babies safely returned to the sea.

I have included the full video here because I want the work to be circular.
I was not there and then I was and then I wasn’t again.
Reflecting on the circle of the moon, of life and death, of the tides, all the motion of the natural world.

Turtles Nest

In the cool of the evening the fire burned.
A danger to no one, gently clearing the land to make ready for the coming rain.
It burnt into the salty ocean air, the crackling braking through the quietness of the night.
I stood for a moment, dancing with the embers as they vanished into the blackness of the starry sky, like offerings to the heavens and the spirits floating there.

Salt Fire

Seeds was the first work I made in this collection. As children we arrange rocks in a line, pick flowers and gather shells, playing in the wild with texture and colour with no expectations of permanence, just the joy of creating and interacting with nature. This is how it feels when I create these works now, a nostalgic joy for my wild, untamed childhood in the bush.

This arrangement was made in a sacred spring. The work has so many layers of meaning for something so simple. Buddhists use the lotus as a metaphor for describing a person's journey to find enlightenment. Starting out in the dark muddy water and going on a journey of growth ever reaching toward the light. To the people of this land this place, The Weemol Spring is a sacred one, the water itself is believed to have healing powers.

Our skin, our bark holds us together, less we drift away like dust.         We are all made of the same stuff, grown like seeds in the womb until we die like old trees giving ourselves over as a shell we make way for the new. 

This old tree lost it’s life in the fire but it’s form will become safe harbor for new life to blossom in the wild untamed savanna, the old sacrifices for the new and so the cycles of all our atoms continues forward...

In this work I reflected on just how many marks humanity has left on the on the natural world, mountains of plastic, giant holes in the earth, poisoned water, a legacy of destruction that will remain many millennia after we are all gone. 

What I wish we left was just food for the flowers to grow over our shadows.

This fire was still burning all around me as I made this image.
Not in a way that caused fear but in a gentle way that shapes and reshapes the landscape year in and year out. 
Always life from death and this blackened hillside is already green with new shoots waiting for rain.

South was made in the lake country in Tasmania.

So much of Tasmania has been cleared by loggers, farmers and others wanting to use the land for their own purposes, much is endless industry with wilderness being pushed to the margins.

This small section of forest remained untouched, layers upon layers of life untamed.
It was the only place I felt at home - uncontrolled and alive.

A paperwasp nest that fell from it's perch hanging under a bridge
I loved the notion that once upon a time this little thing was dangerous and to be feared, avoided at all cost. Yet when I found it it was as benign as a leaf resting harmlessly at the edge of the river.
Just another artefact  of nature fallen back to the river - all it's danger gone like a snake skin or a spider shell.

Made in my front garden with an Australian Fresh Water Crocodile (Crocodylus johnsoni) that was staying with us for a couple of weeks after being found in an abandoned nest. He was released back into the wild soon after this shooting (hopefully with a competitive advantage)

When it rains where I live in Northern Australia the red dirt roads turn into little lakes . 
The water fills the road and is as red as the dirt. The huge splashes cover our car when we drive around the outback going on adventures to the wild places.
We always looked forward to seeing the red water cover the car windows as kids.

This colour for me is everything, it colours our lives out here.
These roads that take us on our adventures in the dry season and keep us at home during the wet.
The magic of red dirt on my skin is all that home is for me. 
Life blood, water, rain, dirt, mud and skin.

There is a portal in the woods behind my house. 
A place that is so obviously a doorway between worlds.
I can see this void in the tress, an empty doorway standing tall in an otherwise sporadic wood 
The void that calls me to look over when ever I walk in the back yard. 
It's not scary, it doesn’t trouble me but I know it's there, like a painting that follows you around the room,

Indigenous land holds a human history going back before recorded time, here people speak of spirit as casually as they do the weather and this place has spirits...

During the wet season here the Tea Trees release oil that sits on the surface of  shallow pools in the valleys in the landscape.
They look like shimmering metallic rivers but they explode at the slightest touch.
The oil looks like it it reflecting the heaves once broken.
The natural oils will flow down stream and disappear into the landscape with the water, a phenomenon usually unseen by people.

Water lilies remind me of the waterways of my childhood. We would always try to see crocodiles lurking under the leaves, hiding amongst the green. Water that was beautiful, wild and dangerous all at the same time.
Always a child’s imaginations running away with the thoughts of  the leviathans that might live beneath...  

Waterlilies are an important symbols in Buddhist culture, growing in the darkness and the mud ever reaching for the light.
Indigenous Australians eat the bulbs and children adorn themselves with the flowers
Native Australian bees rest in their flowers save above the water.
They are signs of healthy eco systems and create habitat of many kinds.

This work represents a turning point in my artistic career. It is the first time I have made a self portrait, including myself in the work, embodied the dead.
Many years from now I believe I will look back on this piece and the moment of inspiration that changed my work forever.

I could right about this work for days, but I think you know what I mean.

We live and we die, our atoms never disappearing just changing form over and over - into the dust under our feet.

Our palaces of stone will not protect us from our death or our bodies decay.  Us mammals covered in hair that rail against our aging, our inevitable death and yet all that came before is already dust and we will go to meet those atoms soon enough.

I once made a ceramic pot and returned it to the wild to be washed away by the rain - a friend said to me “I wonder if that clay will ever remember it was a pot”

For me, there has always been something profoundly human about hair. It embodies the power of femininity, the defiance of Western beauty standards, and the celebration of the beauty found in adult women with all their strength.


This piece explores the potency of our hair, highlighting how women have utilised their hair to convey stories across generations and emphasising the cultural and political taboos that can be attributed to something as seemingly simple as hair.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, the Dalabon people of the Bulman region, we pay our respects to their elders, past, present and emerging.

Orb spiders construct expansive webs that span between trees, resembling galaxies. Within these intricate, seemingly random webs, white egg sacs often dangle, sheltered beneath the protective care of the queen spiders. This piece reminded me of those complex structures, with a queen suspended in the centre of a masterpiece she crafted, a star in a galaxy.

Violet Bond for Achetez de l'Art, PARIS

I didn't know her, a spirit from a place that I had not met before. I don't know how she died but there she was, dead none the less. 
So I honored her with the dried foliage of summer from my Mother-In-Law's Garden. I hoped it was a nest to help her rest before she goes on her way.
Rest in the summer sun friend.

The Rangers where I live left him for me, resting in a box. They know about my work. 
I have never had to explain my honoring to Indigenous Australians, it's like there is a deep understanding of death and the cycle of life that can just remain acknowledged in an unspoken way...

Night Jar, little ground bird, I made this honoring with sprigs of the grass that had sheltered him all of his life and I sent him into that good night with the last rays of the day.

May you rest now under wild stars.

At this time of year in Northern Australia the spear grass covers everything.
All the death that came before with the long dry season.
All the bones entombed in the mud grown over with the lush grass forest.
The green covers the fire, covers the ash, covers the dead.
All that stands now is life, life that came with the rain.
Life triumphant for a moment before the fire comes to claim the land again.

Throughout history there are so many stories of the women that came from the water. Mermaids, selkies and in my home town the Djomi spirit that comes to create new life. 

The water, the womb, a place of life beginning and in many cultures a place where we go when we die. The flow of the natural world, from its beginning to it's end.

Crocodiles are cold; it’s a feeling that's hard to describe if you have never held one close. They are smooth, gentle, and cold.

The relationship between mammals and reptiles has always been a source of fascination to me. Why are so many of us humans fearful of things that slither?

There is a primal nature to crocodiles that I deeply love. For me, they are living fossils, relics from a world before humans. A realm of instinct and environment, not of ego or conscience, just nature being its wild, dangerous, unapologetic self.

Where I live in Northern Australia, water means life and death all at the same time. There is fear in the water, the leviathans that linger there, we teach our children to try and see the bottom.

But when the rain comes we are the first to dance in it, to swim in the puddles, to play in the mud and fish in the rivers.

This piece was made in wet season, when the rivers are high and dangerous, when seeing the bottom is hard and when the water moves fast.

There is so much water everywhere that it can consume you.

I found a scanner in my father’s house, and I love the images it creates. There’s something nostalgic, something old—something that feels like a reminder of something else about them.

This is 'Sneaky,' an Australian saltwater crocodile who stayed with us for a few weeks until he regained his strength. He's back in the river now, and I wish him a long and snappy life.

This piece is my first-ever piece of scanography minted on the blockchain.

I have always held space for wild birds. I feed them when they are young and bury them when they die. They often sea me from miles away or come to my call. It has been this way for as long as I can remember. Indigenous Australians would often bring injured birds to me when I was very small. Perhaps they remember…  

This day the wind blew strong and the  whistling kites were surfing on their waves. I made my momentary marks in the sand following their flight through the grey sky. I did not have any fish for them this day, maybe next time.

A celebration of the enduring spirit and the transformative power of creation.

One thing I love about the sea here is that it is always trying to kill you.
It will swallow you whole if you let it.

While making this work, I was avoiding box jellyfish, also known as sea wasps—one of the most venomous creatures on the planet—and sea lice, which were emerging from the sand and trying to eat me.

Although this sounds extreme, it’s honestly something I deeply love about Australia.
It never bends to the comforts of humans. You either learn to live here, or you die.

EVE: The Power of growth and Resistance

"Ebb and Flow" was created shortly after we moved from the outback back to the sea.
I had spent my childhood by the wild Australian sea, where the water is warm and untamed, and large reptiles linger in the waves. I loved that it listened to no man, unapologetic in its beauty and danger.

The work reflects the ebb and flow of life and where we find ourselves in its motion.

With the photographic assistance of my husband, Alex Ernst, who piloted the drone and has supported my work from the moment we met.

Where I live in Northern Australia there are only 2 seasons, wet and dry. I love the wet season, everything grows uncontrollably like the earth has released a spring, mould climbs the walls of our houses and every where there is water.

Spore muses on those cycles.
On fires being consumed by rain and fungus growing to eat the decaying flesh of plants and all that came before.

A bubble of life until it to releases it's spores and turns to dust to wait for the rain to return next year.

Spore is a performance work made in remote outback Australia on Dalabon Country outside of Bulman in the NT.

This Kookaburra died on the road. They are an iconic part of Australian culture, known for their distinctive calls that mark the first light and last light of the day.

This work was created using a scanner. I enjoy the ghostly glow of the scanner's light. The process also recalls scientific imaging methods, such as MRI slices, inviting us to explore and examine the world just a little more deeply.
