Loop based on a photogrammetric model of three tree stumps at The Plot (September 2020, 51° 24‘ 49.8” N - 5° 39‘ 19.9” E). 

Three tree stumps were left for birds to sit on after a small forest - now called 'The Plot' - was cleared due to a climate change induced fatal spruce bark beetle infestation. The stumps resemble a monument, and are treated as such; they're being 'charged' with emblems and plaquettes related to The Plot's demise.

NGMI. Anthem.

NGMI stands for ’not gonna make it’. The abbreviation is often used for bad investments in crypto space, but in the case of this anthem, it describes a post-pandemic sentiment towards our collective behaviour in the light of the climatological and ecological system crisis.

This is a slightly reworked version of the opening scene of NGMI, a 12 minute digital film in vertical HD (1080x1920px, colour/audio, 2022 © Alexandra Crouwers). This version is minted on the occasion of the eponymous solo show, opening June 11, 2022, in the building of Collectie De.Groen (fine art collection) in Arnhem, The Netherlands.

NGMI: an anthem for the end of the world as we know it.

This .gif is made from a scene from 'The Closed CircuiT' (720p digital animation, colour/sound, 10'00", 2006).

I rebuilt my studio at the time with 3D software, which provoked a visual feedback loop: I was in the studio both physically and virtually. This claustrophobic experience became the work itself. The film starts with quotes from Steven Pinkers’ ‘How the Mind Works’.

The .gif shows my studio space – a room in my apartment – and Han Solo I, the now defunct Macbook Pro I used to produce the work, including its sticker decoration. On the screen, another view of the studio is visible. As part of the film, the scene is introduced by a title card reading:'Meanwhile'.

ⓘ are five information panels placed in the Brialmont park in Antwerp (Belgium) from July through December 2021. This panel is placed on The Plot itself, the frame a copy – in weathered steel – of the frames used in Antwerp.

The panel displays an ‘infographic’ on The Plot, a former family forest, that fell victim to climatological and ecological circumstances in the Autumn of 2019.

The panel can regularly be changed and updated. The first panel – this one – was presented in May 2022. The Ips typography text in the background reads 'regeneration'. 

"This is The Plot.

In the Summer of 2019, a small family forest fell victim to a bark beetle infestation. Unusually mild winters caused larvae numbers to explode while extreme drought weakened the otherwise more resilient trees. Expanding patches of dead forest can be found from the North Sea coast to the Baltics and Romania.

The clearcut became The Plot: a witness to the climatological system crisis, and a portal for ecological grief. How do we deal with this new type of loss? What is The Plot telling us? How can biodiversity be restored if it doesn’t get a chance anymore to do so? And what constitutes as ‘nature’ when it’s being confused with a park?"

Miniature #19 from a 2019 series of ultrashort animations, made using the Instagram stories feature. A contemporary interpretation of a 16th century mystic emblem book.  The 5-seconds works are constructed from prefab components such as emojis and available Giphy stickers. In June 2020, I submitted two proposals - Hand Stencil and Stone Tool - for emoji, to be added to the expanding digital pictogram vocabulary. Unfortunately, Unicode, the organization responsible for the standardization of digital symbols, declined both proposals in its first selection rounds.

Unicode adds a selection of emoji each year, based on incoming proposals. Anyone can submit an idea for an emoji. The total selection procedure can take up to a year from submission to implementation. Many devices and apps use their own design sets for emoji, so the proposal is more a conceptual defense than a design challenge.

The Stone Tool and Hand Stencil proposals were deemed to be used not frequently enough for implementation, although I argued their conceptual merits would outweigh those, since especially the prehistoric cave art of hand stencils are the first examples of pictograms. 
 
This .pdf - originally a Google Docs file - contains the submission for an emoji proposal at the Unicode consortium (p. 2-12), and an addendum concerning the result (p. 12-13). This document is minted on the Tezos blockchain as an archival NFT in January 2022.

Considerable segments of my artistic body of work arise from attempts to connect my digital practice to the origins of art - or image - making within human evolution. Parallel to this, I’m interested in using consumer technology as a tool, and digital ‘pop’ culture as a mature, additional language of art history.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the plot of 'The Avengers' revolves around the antagonist Thanos, who’s motivated by the traumatic witnessing of his home planet’s demise for reasons resonating in our current climatological and ecological crises. 

The 'Thanos Solution' chapter is taken from 'Mistakes. The artist talk' ( 15’05” - 16’58”), a 20 minutes and 20 seconds powerpoint-on-steroids video lecture relating the death of a small family forest due to a beetle infestation to a pandemic, dioramas, new mythologies, and a possible musical in relation to my doctoral artistic research trajectory.
