Origins 

Florilegium’s inspiration lies in the ancient art of botanical illustration.

Historically, a florilegium was an anthology of illustrations depicting exotic plants and creatures. These publications reached their peak in the 17th century, with notable examples such as Nehemiah Grew’s “Anatomy of Plants”, Ernst Haeckel’s “Kunstformen Der Natur” and Joseph Banks’ “Florilegium”. These publications have had a lasting impact on both science and art. Today, florilegia often document endangered plant species from specific locations or gardens and are among the most lavish and expensive of books to produce.

In this generative tribute to the ancient art of florilegia, imagined biomorphic forms compete for space in a garden based on the geometry of circles.

Perforations is an exploration of time. 

What if we found a set of ancient artefacts buried underground for unknown millennia? What are they? Who made them? What are they trying to tell us? 

These artefacts have been somehow pierced, leaving behind holes in distinctive but unknown patterns. Their surfaces have been marked by the passage of time. Maybe the patterns are a message. Or a map. Or a clue. 

Perforations explores the idea of communicating across vast time scales, where there is no common language between those who left the artefacts and those who found them. 

The work invites us to imagine what information could have been so important that it needed to be recorded in this manner and left for future generations to discover.

Ruminations - An insomnia inspired piece.

What keeps you awake at night? What thoughts and feelings swirl around in the dark at 3am? 

This generative work explores the connectedness of our thoughts at night, how things can slip in and out of consciousness into the realm of sleep.

Each piece is a map of worries, a chart for a sleepless night. Some nights are sparse and peaceful, others full of competing ruminations.  

Each variation has been generatively created by code:
- Hand-plotted rumination shapes that are generatively altered for each variation. 
- Each shape is unique in form and movement. 
- Generative properties determine the complexity or otherwise of the map, along with form and colour. 
- Subtle movement gives life and a sense of nocturnal unease.

A generative take on the techniques of Damien Hirst’s famous Spin paintings.

Each spin painting is unique, but share a common algorithm. 

This work is about translating a real-world painting technique into digital , generative form. Unique blends of colour and shape are created by generatively assigning each work a set of traits that guide the process. The number of rotations, brush sizes, colour palettes and framing all add to the result. 

Traits:
Blend mode – 5 different modes for blending colour
Density – how many brushes 
Colours – 5 different palettes
Spin count – how many spins to create the piece
Spin direction – what direction it spins
Frame – Mostly white, but also a rare special tunnel effect

Technical Drawing classes I took many years ago often focused on using isometric projections to create detailed diagrams of complex objects. I remember being fascinated by how a few simple lines created the illusion of three dimensions and gave expression to the maths behind the geometry. 

This piece reminds me of those plans and diagrams I used to draw. It plays with perception, flipping between 2D and 3D and invites you to believe that perhaps they are remnants of some grand idea.

Reminiscent of festive Christmas tree baubles while tripping on acid at the family get together, this generative and animated piece creates shapes based on the standard Penner easing equations. Usually these equations are used to add a real-world feel to objects in motion. Here are they used to create symmetrical patterns, overlayed with each other in a circular world. 

For each token,  colours, number of shapes, starting positions, rates of movement and mathematical equation are generated, resulting in unique generative patterns for each minted item.

Imagined coral-like creatures grown in a generative lab, released into the wild on fxhash.

Every variation is a unique generative curation of algorithmic choices. The resultant forms are at once both delicate and muscular.  Are they alive? Could they survive in the wild? 

The algorithm creates the skeleton of each creature from a set of anchor points and uses quadratic interpolation between the points to create the core shape. A rotating brush consisting of layered polygons of varying structures and patterns then follows the shape, twisting and turning and it goes. Generative features assigned to the brush then determines the resultant shape.
