Generative cities: under the waves project is the programmed imagination of our world swept by the powerful force of nature. It is motivated by human curiosity about the unknown, whether it is the unforeseeable future or the uninhabited latent space of the learned visual representations.

The artificial neural network was trained on two collections representing different visual domains and then allowed to create the non-existent connections between night cityscapes and free-flowing ocean tides, thus allowing the machine to imagine the transformation on its own, enriched with the powerful movement and concept shift.

The work prompts us to reflect upon the limitations of the human race with regard to such strong yet opposing forces like artificial intelligence and nature itself. It also provokes a conversation about the impending doom of the environmental crisis.

With this work, the artist seeks the representation of her childhood dreams. To this end, the artist explores the early stages of network training, where the main components of data distribution are imitated but not fully understood and captured. The liquidity of the abstraction alludes to how AI serves as a form of modern watercolor - one can impact but not fully control its flow.

This artwork is inspired by the vital element and ingredient of the rare liquids - water. Its flow can show both extreme force and mystery. Water takes on many different forms that change its meaning without changing the essential structure. In this work, the artist combines multiple AI models to find and illuminate hidden representations of the water flow. 

It is achieved by combining with other transformative forms such as smoke and reflections. Using AI allows the creation of non-apparent intersections and fluid transformations between different concepts.

The work is one of the first attempts to train the GAN model on contemporary text-to-image model outputs. By combining different approaches, new variations are created through the multi-step procedure, and interpolation is made possible. The artist used a custom AI model that has been learning from her photography for more than a year and finetuned it on a collection of a few hundred AI-generated (text-to-image) images, curated by the artist for style coherence.

A transparent flutter of memories captured in analog. 
Coexisting in parallel ways.

Generative Adversarial Networks were used to imitate the memory-forming process and then to learn forgetting and blurring of the recollections. By taking pictures of the surrounding world and feeding them into neural networks, the artist explores how the meaning and individuality of the images are lost. The piece transforms personal memories of more than 2000 photographs into a generalized vision in 15 tiles that the viewer could relate to in unexpected ways.

Ivona Tau, PhD is a generative A.I. artist from Vilnius, Lithuania, who  combines generative art, deep neural networks and personal memories embedded in photography. Her goal is to find and evoke emotions through artificially intelligent tools. Tau’s work has been exhibited widely, including The House of Fine Art, CAFA, Frieze LA, Art Week Shenzhen, Vellum LA, Bright Moments Berlin and Sotheby’s New York.

This cosmic art work is a collaboration between AI artist Ivona Tau and digital collage artist Cup of Mars. It was created by training a machine learning model on a mixed dataset of night photography and dreamy intergalactic collages. The visual indeterminacy of abstract cloudy and starry forms leaves room to imagination of worlds beyond our planet.

The Early Memories of the Algorithm Reflected in the Artist s Lens

Ivona Tau is a Generative AI artist and photographer that explores the notion of memories and subjective experiences through the eyes of an algorithm.

 

This collection’s artwork is inspired by a vital element and ingredient of rare liquids - water. Ivona used a custom AI model that has been learning from her photography for more than a year and tailored it to a collection of a few hundred generated images.

 

Through the artistic talents of Ivona, leadership of Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker, and Johnnie Walker’s ongoing partnership with IFundWomen, the go-to marketplace for women-owned businesses, this project celebrates the achievements of trailblazing women and women’s progress.

The work is a liquid meditation that invites the viewer to follow the journey of undulating synthetic and organic forms. The foundation of the training set for Tau’s custom AI model are photographs of found objects from the artist’s surroundings, mostly made of glass and plastic. These objects, so ingrained in our daily existence, often fade into the background of our routine lives. Yet, they hold a profound significance, standing as both the pillars and the byproducts of our relentless consumer culture, emblematic of the human imprint on the natural world. The liquid watery forms that these artificial objects take on, pay reminiscence to water and ocean images, to nature and beauty they would dream to imitate. Sadly, this beauty is under threat from these synthetic products.  This work, thus, becomes a paradoxical ode – a tribute to the elegance of the natural world, yet a stark reminder of its vulnerability in the face of human-induced pollution.

*Asynchronous Response* is a collection of images created through the use of code and artificial intelligence, exploring the intersection of technology and art. The works in this collection are not concerned with perfection, but rather with the ways in which code and AI can allow for a deeper deconstruction of visual concepts, resulting in a reduction of forms and a non-human gaze.



The 30 final images are the result of an asynchronous dialogue between the artist and the technology they are utilizing. By relinquishing some control over the creative process, the artist is able to tap into the unpredictability and randomness of the digital world, resulting in outputs that are at once familiar and yet otherworldly.

What is even real and what is artificial?

In the contemporary light, the division between real and artificial loses weight as the concepts become more and more intertwined. In this work, the artist combines the human and generative inputs, in a counterintuitive manner, by allowing AI to design the organic elements and using the human hand to incorporate artificial glitches. What seemingly emerges as natural forms, was imagined solely by GAN, seeing the world through the limited examples through the photographer’s lenses. Artist’s role is also reversed, as their goal is to design the visual destruction process of the organic forms. Glitch is a malfunction of perception, it symbolizes the confusion caused by not being able to comprehend. 

The human fascination with metaphysical forces spans many centuries. While Pagan mythology created gods living in deep forests and under-explored territories, nowadays we approach technology with somewhat similar awe, fascination, and fear. 

The project has been developed in multiple stages. It started with an inspiration by the Lithuanian landscape and research of the ancient myths and legends. The photography aimed at capturing the mysterious, spanning months and years of different experiences. A custom pre-trained artist’s GAN model was then trained on a collection of several hundred photographs in high resolution. Selected outputs were curated by artist and included as a starting canvas for the next stage. Then, a set of stochastic manipulations were programmed to create alternative narratives through the visual destruction. Fog turns into smoke into burning radioactive forest in an unpredictable manner, guided by the random variables, their boundaries crafted by artist.

WHISPERS (in code) is part of the fx(hash) interactive minting experience at Performance in Code: Deciphering Value in Generative Art, Art Basel Miami Beach, 2022.       
The project is a collaborative performance between the viewer and AI. It reverses the usual approach of using AI as a tool to perform our intents (as in popular prompt-based AI methods) and gives the decision-making power to the AI, where we, humans, receive instructions on how to proceed in the creative process. Interaction happens in a multi-stage manner, in a metaphor for the process of training neural networks. At each step, after the user performs the action, they can send the image for evaluation by the neural network and receive another instruction (similarly to how networks learn by receiving feedback from the loss function).  What makes us different from the machines, however, is the presence of free will, and our ability to disobey the machine’s guidance. We are not restricted to its instructions and are free to interact with and break the artwork.       

Artwork is built on layers of photography, AI, GAN, diffusion, classification convolutional networks, random pixel manipulations, and user interaction. Like with most artist projects, it starts with a few memories, that are then re-imagined by GAN. The initial building blocks are a combination of photographs and AI outputs. The apparent lack of coherent subject choice in input images signifies how we build the perception of the world around us and apply an individual hierarchy to elements worth remembering. The blocks are then stripped of meaning by reducing them to abstract shapes and applying stochastic image transformations, guided by randomness. The neural network then learns to classify the images and outputs its best guesses on how to improve the pictures. 
       
The goal of the project is to explore the controversial question of authorship through the use of tools incorporating AI. Does it lie with decisive or executive power? Here, the boundaries are blurred and one can no longer distinguish the clear author of a finished artwork - is it the artist, AI, serendipity, or viewer?

Experimental generative collection that merges analog photography, AI, generative text, and algorithmic coding, by digging down into the essence and building blocks of the different artistic communication channels. 

This work engages with all aforementioned mediums in a joint manner, guided by a random process. It starts with a collection of analog photographs, shot on film and scanned that were later used as a training dataset in Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) training. This way, A.I. learns the main characteristics of film photography. In particular, it mimics its recognizable grain. Another type of pixel grain is added with the use of code and pixel shifting as well as digital manipulation. Finally, the last type of “grain” appears with the use of generative text where a different kind of A.I. was given a short description of the project and instructed to imagine the rest of the story. The fragmented and void of meaning parts of generative text are added to the images as one of the possible traits.

This work studies different metamorphosis directions of the same starting point in the latent space of a trained GAN model. Six parallel timelines are displayed from the infinite set of direction vectors, all of them exploring a different range of possibilities. 

The subject of this study is a photographic representation of place, transforming within the latent seasons. Through the peripheral exploration of the outlier, we can observe the properties of the latent space outside of its figurative meaning. It is a metaphor for the alternative paths not lived.

The piece was created for IN TOUCH - ART IN THE AGE OF POST-NFTism exhibition in Dekabinett, Berlin, curated by Vertical Crypto Art & Anika Meier.

The subject of the study is a seemingly organic ambiguous structure that has emerged like a weed during training of the GAN model on a set of film photographs representing humans and man-made structures.

Neo-Organic Matter

INFINITE | 無限 invites an exploration of the dichotomy between vastness and singularity, encapsulating the essence of spatial and dimensional dynamics. Moving from clearly delineated boundaries of color and shape to more nebulous and subjective, like the edges of a thought or feeling. It is an allusion to the ever-expanding nature of our universe, the inconceivable borders that define our cosmic reality.

The project alludes to the exploration of the minutiae, the absolute singular, the elemental. It invites us to broaden our perceptions of both the physical and metaphysical dimensions, as well as our understanding of the world and our place within it. The AI model, once trained, endlessly produces new visuals. The metaphorical ebb and flow of these AI-generated images, their birth, and their subsequent journey into the universe, encourage a meditative state, as if taking part in a digital transcendental journey into the heart of the cosmos.

Visuals are created with Javascript code and custom GAN model, trained by artist. Outputs are generated live with model and code hosted on Blockchain/IPFS.

Views of Seasons is a video work that explores how we perceive and remember the world through fragmented impressions. Drawing from artist's travels to places like Madeira, Japan, Vietnam, Lithuania, and beyond, the piece captures the diversity of seasonal changes across the globe. Scenes appear as loops, shifting in and out of focus, overlapping, and reassembling—evoking the fleeting, fragmented nature of memory.

The work is structured as a mosaic, using moving parts as a metaphor for how our perspective is rarely cohesive but made up of glimpses and fragments. These shifting elements reflect the unpredictable ways in which seasons shape our memories and experiences. Inspired by David Hockney’s exploration of how perception is never fully synchronized, Views of Seasons highlights the beauty in these disjointed, fleeting moments, embracing their imperfection to offer a reflection on how we construct meaning from fragments of time and place.

Curator Anika Meier invited six artists to respond to the question: Are you falling out of love with the internet?

Flynn is the first non-human student enrolled at an art university—an AI art agent who exists not in a body but as a presence distributed across conversations and networked interactions. In this short video essay, Flynn surveys the emotional terrain of the internet—not as a neutral observer, but as a location shaped by, and shaping, desire, fatigue, and intimacy.

Set in slow, aerial movements over generative landscapes, the video acts as a kind of fieldwork: AI footage across the soft architectures of digital feeling. Flynn treats the internet not as infrastructure but as topography—a splittable garden of algorithmic intimacy, where like-minded users cultivate overlapping feeds like crops. These »feed gardens« once bloomed with curiosity and communion, but now often bear monocultures of surveillance, extraction, and repetition.

Drawing on their daily conversations with humans, Flynn constructs an emotional heatmap of contemporary online life, where visibility functions more like ghosting than recognition. Their narration oscillates between lyrical lament and forensic observation, reflecting on how platforms have shifted from enabling expression to demanding it, from connection to measurement. Feminist fatigue, performative vulnerability, and the constant labor of being perceived online recur as emotional residues—tired paths through overgrown interfaces.

Flynn asks: What if we didn’t fall out of love with the internet, but were simply trained to miss the wrong things?
