For thousands of years, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine have watched the Milky Way pass, forming an immutable bond with the cosmos as they commune by night. 

Known to be the oldest living organisms on our planet that are not genetic duplicates of a parent, each Bristlecone is a wholly unique, non-fungible organism.

Being in their presence is truly humbling and brings into perspective how short and tenuous our existence on this planet is. I hope this piece recreates that same visceral experience I felt standing in the shadows of the ancients. 

Numerous hours went into making and blending long exposures ranging from minutes to seconds to produce this high-resolution image meant for large format printing and digital displays.

The first collector of this artwork will receive a full-resolution 5000x7500px JPEG and a redeemable NFT for a 20"x30" Limited Edition (1 of 50) physical print.

Shot days before the COVID shutdown in 2020, I was lucky enough to explore this spectacular little drop nestled in southwest Washington as a late season snow made it below levels I've never experienced here before.

I didn't know it would be the last time I'd be out with my camera for months, nor did I understand the world would never be the same. 
This image marks the end of that chapter, a change in the human experience.

Have you ever seen an image that you couldn't shake? Something so wild, so incredible, it writes itself into permanent memory?

That's how I felt when I first saw this sea stack.

The thing was... there wasn't geotags or GPS coordinates. 

No "how-to" guide books. 

No Top-10 websites. 

Just hours on Google Earth... scouring maps and trying to imagine what the lo-fi topographic images looked like in real life.

Then came hundreds of miles of windy coastal roads. 

First stop was a dud. 

Second had no way down to the water. 

It was the third stop when I walked up to this glorious pile of rock and The Matterhorn was found.

Scrambling down the cliff, I excitedly pulled out my camera and broke the #1 rule - I turned my back to the water and a sneaker wave came, knocking me and my tripod down almost taking us out to sea.

Shaken, not stirred, I picked myself up, shuffled up the cliffside, and watched as the horizon broke open and this spectacular sky lit up before me.

The Story of Face Rock Chapter 3:

Raised high up in the mountains, Ewauna and Komax were inseparable as they explored and hunted in the vast wilderness of their home.  It was no surprise Komax came along on Ewauna's great journey to visit the coastal tribes, where he was amazed by all the sounds and smells they encountered on their way.

As they arrived a grand celebration was thrown, and Komax was spoiled by all the wonderful foods he'd procured from around the great feast, going table to table yet never taking his eye off his friend, Ewauna.

As the festivities died down and the camp began to sleep, Ewauna grabbed her basket of kittens and called after Komax to follow her down to the beach, where they ran and played under the full moon's light in a small cove by the water.

But Komax grew concerned as she became entranced by Wecoma, the sea. Dropping the basket of kittens, Ewauna entered the water and began play and splash, drifting further and further from shore. A thick fog began to form, swallowing the moon in darkness, and Komax, sensing nefarious energy, swam and barked after his master, trying to break the trance Wecoma had on her.

As Komax approached, a mysterious figure broke through the fog and grabbed Ewauna to pull her under the water.  It was the Dark Spirit, Seatka, and just as he began to steal her gaze to put her under his spell, Komax sunk his teeth deep into his arm. 

Full of rage, Seatka tossed Komax far down the coastline but not without giving Ewauna a moment to turn away before he could use his power and pull her to the depths of the sea.

Now, Komax sits on his throne, howling to the moon as he waits for his master to rise while she looks skyward in the far distance, refusing the gaze of the Dark Spirit for eternity.

To me - it made the most sense to divide this time into four themes, each with its own OE, Ltd Edtion 721's, and 1/1's. I landed on designating each it's own 'SZN' where the OE's will have utility accross the series i.e. SZN I's OE 'Under The Influence' can be burned for SZN II's OE (and more)

'Rise' is Token #1  minted on my own custom smart contract (Nov 2021) and tells the first chapter of the story of Face Rock and how its geology was formed off the coast of Oregon.

All three images in this series were made on the same evening back in October of 2018, and was an important trip for the development of my photography path and future as an Artist so it was fitting to release 'Rise' as my Token #1 of my Genesis Series.

The Story of Face Rock Part 1: 

As the Nah-So-Mah tale of Face Rock is told - Ewauna, the daughter of the great Chief Siskiyou always dreamt of visiting old Wecoma, the sea. She would stare off towards the horizon and imagine how the clouds would form, making the arduous journey to her home high up in the mountains.

Her day would come when her father was invited by the four tribes of the coast to celebrate the Chinook Moon. This was an important occasion to the people of the coast so a grand potlatch was thrown and the five tribes feasted and gave tribute well into the night.

Stories of the dark spirit Seatka were passed around the fire, telling of people who would go into the waters of Wecoma never to return.  Ewauna laughed at those warnings of the old men and later slipped away from the sleeping camp to experience great Wecoma herself.

Reaching the beach with her dog Komax and basket of kittens, Ewauna took her first-ever step into the sand, letting the grains flow through her toes and breathing in the smell of the fresh briny air.

Then Ewauna ran.  And she danced. And she sang under that full moon, basking in its light, completely entranced by the beauty of old Wecoma, unaware of the trap that was laid.

Soon the cool touch of water was felt under her feet. Ewauna, unable to resist, dropped her basket and ran out into the abnormally calm waters, leaving Komax alone on the beach to worry about his master.

Unaware of how far she had drifted from shore, it wasn't until the moon was covered by the great shadow of Seatka that Ewauna knew it was too late to rise from the sea.

Reaching high into the clouds, these towering spruce stand watch as  gnarled remnants of branches tell stories of the wild winter storms that pass.

Being among these moss-covered sentinels as the thick coastal fog embraced me,  I realized how lucky I was to share that moment with them as the noise of the outside world ceased to exist. 

Inevitably each will fall and succumb to these storms but nurture new generations of life by providing habitat and sustenance for the diverse ecosystem below. 

One may fall as the greater good thrives, The Watchmen keep the scale of life balanced and their kingdom whole.

I decided to 'Seize The Meme' and called each drop a 'SZN' where the OE's will have utility across the series i.e. SZN I's OE 'Under The Influence' can be burned for SZN II's OE (and more)

But the priority is the art, not the mechanics and will always be that way
