Cortezas de palma cuentan historias tejidas e intrincadas, de destinos vagos que se pierden en los cabos sueltos, de lo que la memoria entrelaza con las notas que desprenden los pétalos de las flores, encontradas en el andar constante a lo largo de los senderos, que unos días conducen a los campos y otros a las bahías.

Retazos de realidad que se conciencian, luego desaparecen en la memoria, y solo los rastros de materia, piedras, hojas, pétalos, plumas, conchas y cortezas, reviven cada huella dejada en el andar de lo superfluo, y otras tantas veces, nos sumergen en las profundidades densas del inconsciente.

Bajo los pies, la sal y la arena permean el andar cotidiano, y el polvo cobija la existencia, en el aquí y el ahora, en el pasado lejano y en las páginas invisibles de un futuro que se escapa de nosotros y de los otros. Solo las coincidencias encontradas se superponen abruptamente sobre las partículas, descubiertas por los rayos diagonales de luz al caer la tarde, anunciando fortuna, no se conoce para quien, solo que llegará pronto.



Palm barks tell woven and intricate stories, of vague destinies lost in loose ends, of what memory intertwines with the notes given off by the petals of the flowers, found in the constant walk along the trails, which some days drive to the fields and others to the bays.

Pieces of reality pops in the consciousness, then disappear in the memory, and only the traces of matter, pebbles, leaves, petals, fheathers, shells and barks, revive every footprint left in the path of the superfluous, and many other times, submerge us in the dense depths of the unconscious.

Underfoot, salt and sand permeate the daily walks, and dust shelters the existence, in the here and now, in the distant past and in the invisible pages of a future that escapes from us and from others. Only the coincidences found, are abruptly superimposed on the particles, discovered by the diagonal rays of light when the afternoon drops, announcing fortune, unknown to whom, only that it will arrive soon.

On 2018, during my walks along some beaches of Barcelona, Spain, I collected thousand of sea glass pieces, for several months. A journey that evolved into the creation of an ephemeral sculpture made by 1.753 pieces of sea glass. After the ephemeral sculpture was photograph to immortalize it in a digital medium, all sea glass pieces were recycled.

In the Article "Micro/nano glass pollution as an emerging pollutant in near future", is explained:

"Glass is overused and produces waste in amounts of millions of tons per year, which requires around 1 million years in decomposing. Only 21% of the total glass produced is recycled worldwide, meaning that the recycling of glass is four times less compared to the glass manufactured.

A key factor that contribute to the glass toxicity is the ingestion of micro/nano glass by marine lives and transfer it in the food web. Such pollution can result in a number of deleterious repercussions. The small size particles can get easily mixed with the environment and move through the food or water cycle. Micro/nano size contaminants are much more harmful in comparison to macro pollutants due to their size. Micro/nano glass, given their ubiquity, need to be regarded as a factor of global change."

On 2018, during my walks along some beaches of Barcelona, Spain, I collected thousand of sea glass pieces. A journey that resulted in 2.2k+ Km traveled, equivalent of 2.3+ millions of steps, in a period of 9 months, equivalent of 1.9k hours or 112k seconds, and millions of thoughts; which evolved into the creation of an Ephemeral Sculpture made by 1.753 pieces of sea glass, and 57 hours of labor. After the ephemeral sculpture was photograph to immortalize it in a digital medium, all sea glass pieces were recycled, around 3.5 kilos. The creative process took me almost 2 months, because the periods in which I created and photographed the ephemeral sculpture were as important as the periods I was away of it.


En 2018, durante mis caminatas por algunas playas de Barcelona, España, recogí miles de piezas de vidrio marino. Un tránsito que resultó en 2.2k+ Km recorridos, equivalente a 2.3+ millones de pasos, en un período de 9 meses, equivalente a 1.9k horas o 112k segundos, y millones de pensamientos; que evolucionaron en la creación de una Escultura Efímera hecha por 1.753 piezas de vidrio marino y 57 horas de labor. Después de fotografiar la escultura efímera para inmortalizarla en un medio digital, se reciclaron todas las piezas de vidrio marino, cerca de 3.5 kilos. El proceso creativo me llevó alrededor de 2 meses, porque los períodos en que creé y fotografié la escultura efímera fueron tan importantes como los períodos en los que estuve alejada de ella.

Sea Glass: Pollution into Beauty?

Glass is overused and produces waste of millions of tons per year, which requires around 1 million years of decomposing. Only 21% of glass is recycled worldwide. Glass is not only composed of silica; it's a mixture of different carbonates, silicates, borates, calcium, magnesium and other heavy metals. Annually, 50 billion tons of sea or river sand are used to manufacture glass, which is twice the amount produced by every river in the world. Whether glass is produced or recycled, it requires enormous amounts of natural resources and high-energy consumption, generating a major negative impact on the environment through the emission of greenhouse gases and soil erosion.

Beaches have been depositories of discarded glass for decades. Years of erosion by the tide's ebb and flow have smoothed and polished dangerous sharp glass pieces into vibrant pebbles, turning pollution into beauty?

As plastic, glass effect on marine and terrestrial life affects the food web, and results in deleterious repercussions into the lives of the ecosystem. Micro/nano glass needs to be regarded as a factor of global change, so we all take action, immediately, reusing and upcycling glass, and developing better materials to replace the mass use of flat and container glass. Meanwhile, recycling is another solution to combat pollution, until better materials replace it.


Vidrio Marino: ¿Contaminación en Belleza?

El vidrio se utiliza en exceso y produce residuos de millones de toneladas al año, que requieren alrededor de 1 millón de años en descomponerse. Sólo el 21% del vidrio se recicla en el mundo. El vidrio no se compone sólo de sílice, es una mezcla de diferentes carbonatos, silicatos, boratos, calcio, magnesio y otros metales pesados. Cada año, se utilizan 50 billones de toneladas de arena marina o fluvial para fabricar vidrio, lo que supone el doble de la cantidad producida por todos los ríos del mundo. Tanto si el vidrio se produce como si se recicla, requiere enormes cantidades de recursos naturales y altos consumos de energía, lo que produce un gran impacto negativo en el medio ambiente, por la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero y la erosión de los suelos.

Las playas han sido depósitos de vidrio, desechado durante décadas. Años de erosión por el flujo y reflujo de las mareas han alisado y pulido peligrosos trozos de vidrio afilados, hasta convertirlos en vibrantes piedras, ¿convirtiendo la contaminación en belleza?

Al igual que el plástico, el efecto del vidrio sobre la vida marina y terrestre afecta la red alimentaria y tiene repercusiones nocivas en los seres vivos del ecosistema. El micro/nano vidrio debe ser considerado como un factor de cambio global, por lo que todos debemos tomar acción, inmediatamente, reutilizando el vidrio, y desarrollando mejores materiales para sustituir el uso masivo del vidrio plano y de los envases. Mientras tanto, reciclarlo es otra de las soluciones para combatir la contaminación generada, hasta tanto mejores materiales lo sustituyan.

LOVE LETTERS

Cortezas de palma cuentan historias tejidas e intrincadas, de destinos vagos que se pierden en los cabos sueltos, de lo que la memoria entrelaza con las notas que desprenden los pétalos de las flores, encontradas en el andar constante a lo largo de los senderos, que unos días conducen a los campos y otros a las bahías.

Retazos de realidad que se conciencian, luego desaparecen en la memoria, y solo los rastros de materia, piedras, hojas, pétalos, plumas, conchas y cortezas, reviven cada huella dejada en el andar de lo superfluo, y otras tantas veces, nos sumergen en las profundidades densas del inconsciente.

Bajo los pies, la sal y la arena permean el andar cotidiano, y el polvo cobija la existencia, en el aquí y el ahora, en el pasado lejano y en las páginas invisibles de un futuro que se escapa de nosotros y de los otros. Solo las coincidencias encontradas se superponen abruptamente sobre las partículas, descubiertas por los rayos diagonales de luz al caer la tarde, anunciando fortuna, no se conoce para quien, solo que llegará pronto.



Palm barks tell woven and intricate stories, of vague destinies lost in loose ends, of what memory intertwines with the notes given off by the petals of the flowers, found in the constant walk along the trails, which some days drive to the fields and others to the bays.

Pieces of reality pops in the consciousness, then disappear in the memory, and only the traces of matter, pebbles, leaves, petals, fheathers, shells and barks, revive every footprint left in the path of the superfluous, and many other times, submerge us in the dense depths of the unconscious.

Underfoot, salt and sand permeate the daily walks, and dust shelters the existence, in the here and now, in the distant past and in the invisible pages of a future that escapes from us and from others. Only the coincidences found are abruptly superimposed on the particles, discovered by the diagonal rays of light when the afternoon drops, announcing fortune, unknown to whom, only that it will arrive soon.

Our summers unfolded like pages in a book whose ending we refused to read. We moved through the days as if time had misstepped, each moment stretched thin between the sun and the sea. The sand held secrets, and the waves spoke in a language only we could understand—if we listened closely enough, as one does in the haze of a dream. The heat pressed down like a memory trying to break free, and we let it, allowing everything to dissolve into the scent of coconut oil and the hum of transistor melodies.
