**FOCUS** is a 1000 image meditation, and it is my second release of Zen-inspired generative art, following [Ensō](https://www.artblocks.io/project/34).

It’s meant to be played with through its interactivity,* and I hope it challenges viewers through its various portrayals of space and its creation of perceptual phenomena. Additionally, FOCUS can be a meditation in itself for anyone who attempts to recreate an output manually.

This project relies on small sets of consistent shapes, colors, and ratios, helping the outputs to remain cohesive. However, with millions of major trait combinations, the outputs are varied and surprising.

*Interactive features: use up or down arrows to adjust the background pattern's recursion, and left or right arrows to adjust the number of midpoints along the sides of the background pattern. In Zen, ensō is a symbol that represents elegance and enlightenment. It is typically painted by hand in an uninhibited way, allowing for unexpected and beautiful results. Inspired by sumi-e (ink wash painting), this project mimics the practice of painting an ensō in ink by utilizing p5.js. Each generated image uses values from a unique transaction hash to determine paper, brush, ink, the quantity of ink held by each bristle, how quickly the ink flows, and more—all with the goal of creating a simple yet serendipitous painting.

By using the same random hash as the FOCUS script as well as a new random hash that is generated when a deFOCUSed token is created, some traits match the corresponding FOCUS token, while others are specific to the moment a FOCUS owner deFOCUSes their FOCUS. The project is 100% on-chain, relying only on smart contracts to generate the token data, and the assets are rendered live in your browser into an animated SVG image.

Ensō Water Painting #77

100 **Ensō Water Paintings** were created to reward lucky buyers of my Art Blocks project [Ensō](https://artblocks.io/project/34).

Dice was rolled and recorded, paintings were made with water, video recorded each painting's creation and evaporation.

I rolled a set of dice 100 times to determine each painting's features and to determine which Art Blocks Ensō mint numbers should receive a free token airdropped to their wallet.

To ensure that a person would receive one, they'd have to buy 10 Ensōs in a row starting at #xx0 (ex 0-9 or 540-549 or 870-879). Because of that, *I* value each of these at a minimum of 1.08 Eth, but these are gifts that I'm sending out for free.

This algorithm can produce images that are elegantly minimal, as well as images featuring complex patterns that explore visual illusions and artificial space. The limited palette consists of black, white, and five colors; this both constrains possible outcomes and allows the creation of unique perceptual interactions. Inspired by the Zen art tradition of doing more with less, FOCUS does not utilize any pseudo-random number generation, and each output can be recreated by hand using simple math, estimation, and dedication. FOCUS is the second project in my ‘Zenerative’ series of Zen-inspired generative art, following [Ensō](https://www.artblocks.io/project/34). 

The algorithm can produce interactive pieces that are elegantly minimal as well as artworks featuring complex patterns that explore visual illusions and artificial space. The CoinTokens contract allows back and forth exchange between an ERC-20 coin and ERC-1155 tokens representing denominations of that coin. Tokens can be minted (issued) and burnt (liquidated) at any time by the contract in exchange for specific amounts of $LFG, all with no fees.

Scratch is a Zen-inspired generative art project that explores the captivating patterns that sanding discs create on metal surfaces. The digital artworks can be pen-plotted at any scale, and an alternate physical output can be created on sheets of metal using CNC machines.

Interactivity:
'S' saves the SVG. 'C' previews the CNC paths. 'E' exports the CNC paths. 'H' hides the signature stamp.

Plotter Notes:
To replicate the density of the digital image, choose a pen for the main area of a Scratch that is 1/1000th the length of the sides of the plottable area. For the signature, a pen that is 2.6 times thicker than the one used for the main area is suggested. For instance, for a 10" square plot, a 0.25mm pen for the main image and a 0.65mm pen for the signature will closely mimic the density of the digital output. While bolder pens can create more visually striking images, denser Scratches plotted with thicker pens might require a heavier paper stock.

CNC Notes:
Experienced CNC technicians can faithfully execute the outputs on 24" x 24" sheets of metal by using 1", 2", and 3" sanding discs and a 1/16" end mill. The choice of material and finish should be based on the specific characteristics of the Scratch output. If the Scratch output includes the 'Dark' feature, anodized aluminum or copper with a patina can be used. Clear coat the piece after machining to prevent tarnishing.

AI Interpretation:

"FREESTYLE H-AI-KU" is an AI-enhanced exploration of my Freestyle Haiku poetry (freestylehaiku.com). This project utilizes AI as a collective unconscious that not only intensifies the expressiveness of my poetry but also unveils hidden truths and newfound meanings within my words. The resulting work is more than a poem or a visual, it is also a vehicle for the introspection of the human condition through the lens of early Artificial Intelligence systems.

Each poem is individually stored in the smart contract in a way that is composable to other contracts. The image media, AI-generated poem interpretations, and attributes metadata are stored on Arweave.

What’s a great way to have fun with friends? Scribbling!

Scribble Together is an experiment in collaborative creation. I designed a scribbling algorithm without knowing what the eventual colors will be. I’ve then asked friends to create palettes using a custom palette tool.

The palettes may allow for some variety such as choosing from multiple paper colors or selecting a subsample from a set of pen colors. Additionally, palette creators were able to create more than one palette.

When a piece is minted, it is randomly assigned a palette. However, for a limited time, collectors can change the palette for their pieces. Collector’s choices during this time will affect how primary sales are distributed to palette creators.

The artwork is designed to be plotted on 9"x12" paper using 0.45mm or 0.5mm pens. Whether the specific palette for a given piece allows for plotting is a choice left to the palette creator.

Time Between the Lines is Thread Through the Mind is a meditative plotter-performance art project, where each experience is uniquely recorded using specific pen colors on either dark or light paper. As the fourth project in the Zenerative series of Zen-inspired generative art by Matto, it explores the value of time and the interplay between efficiency, order, and aesthetics.

Outputs:
The default live-code outputs are skeuomorphic, each drawn with 500,000 to 1,000,000 circles, while the default live-plot modes use a few thousand simplified lines. Using URL parameters, these live modes can be displayed digitally or plotted. Each token has one default output and includes a total of eight canonical versions: 
- two pen and paper sets (pen suggestions are embedded in the SVG code)
- four optimization settings to change the line drawing order

Interactivity:
- 'S' saves an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file
- 'H' hides the signature (patience required in skeuomorphic mode)

URL Parameter Options:
- alternate = true / false  (switches paper and pens from default)
- optimization  = laps / standard / maximum / anti  (changes line drawing order and visual output)
- skeuomorphic = true / false  (toggles skeuomorphic circles / simple lines)
- signature = true / false  (toggles the signature)

Plotter Notes:
- Please maintain the drawing order for canonical outputs - avoid reordering or optimizing the paths during plotting.

Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, Crystallized Illusions is a collection of 99 pieces created through a generative process. Three variations of this process were made to correspond to the categories of illusions as described by Zhiyi (538-597 CE), the fourth patriarch of the T'ien-t'ai (or Tí Taî) Buddhist tradition. Each process was used to created 33 distinct images.

True Nature #26

(This is an erc-721 bridge of Crystallized Illusions (v1), which was minted on Opensea's shared contract. Contact Matto for instructions. All bridged tokens receive a bonus animated edition.)

Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, Crystallized Illusions is a collection of 99 pieces created through a generative process. Each image has a complexity attribute that correlates to the final image's scale, and this is denoted in each image's name (1-33). Images in each set grow from 1500 x 1500 pixels to 6300 x 6300 pixels, and they are all consistent with one another (for example, Thought and Desire 7, Innumerable 7, and True Nature 7 all share the same resolution).
