Who's That?

Memories of an Unknown boy is inspired by a scrapbook found in a local charity shop. Its pages resonated with my own collage creations, prompting me to incorporate them as the foundation for this piece. The initial collector will be granted the two specific pages integrated into the artwork, with comprehensive details inscribed in the TransientLab Story. Furthermore, the collector has the opportunity to contribute and expand upon this narrative within the TransientLab Story.

This artwork is part of Superchief's collage realm, 'Junk Drawer,' and was showcased at The Oculus in New York on February 1, 2024.

In October last year, I started working on a collection for Marfa—having never been there and no reference material. As a collage artist, that’s a problem.

Then, in a wild coincidence, Hugo from @trygamma messaged me about a project they were doing for Marfa. They were handing out disposable cameras there. Would I be interested in working with the images?

Hell yeah. When the stars align, you say yes.

What started as 20 images turned into a generative collection of 432. The process evolved as I figured out how to make it work.

A collaboration between illustrator Michelle Thompson and the archive of Marcel De Baer (1922 - 2014).
De Baer was a forensic expert specialising in accidents for the public prosecutor's office for the district of Oudenaarde, Belguim. He gathered detailed information on how a collision might have happened and taking photos to accompany the written file was part of his job.
The photos he took are purely utilitarian with no artistic intent at all.
