Family portraiture painting created during the seventeenth century, especially in the Low Countries, is famed for the spontaneity of its figures—who interlock with their bodies, and often, with their gazes. These oil paintings are sketches for larger family portraits produced by an unknown painter during the early-seventeenth century—possibly near Antwerp. They were purchased from an estate sale near Ghent during the summer of 2022, and are being studied for dating, stylistic, and provenance-related questions concerning their own history. The owner of the lot expects to keep them in his private collection, and wished to make them available, for new art connoisseurs.

The 18 works are available in editions of five.

Shades of Rebellion

From 8 October 2015–3 January 2016, the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, the Netherlands, exhibited 27 self-portraits of famous seventeenth century painters. The exhibition was entitled 'Dutch Self-Portraits of the Golden Age’.

Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705) was a quick-learning painter who was born in Rotterdam, worked for some time in Haarlem, and then lived in Amsterdam for most of the rest of his life. His 'Self-Portrait' of 1685, today hangs at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and shows the artist framed by allegorical iconography.

This imaginary self-portrait, is painting #21 in the exhibition's catalogue, and the sixth of six new portraits of Michiel van Musscher.

Catherine de' Medici (1519-1589) was Queen of France, as the wife of King Henry II of France (1519-1559), who reigned the Kingdom of France from 31 March 1547–10 July 1559. Born in Florence, and the second Queen from the French House of Valois-Angoulême, she is best remembered for her patronage of the arts during the French Renaissance, which was a flourishing of art and architecture in the kingdom during her lifetime. Most notably, the numerous châteaux in the Loire Valley; including Château de Chenonceau, which famously spans the river Cher, just east of the city of Tours. This exquisitely pixelated, glitchy, and sickeningly stunning series of portraits was created by her using her MacBook Pro, Dalle2, and her suite of Adobe tools—which included the first version of photoshop—during one of her many periods of self-adulation, in the 1560s.

She was that ahead of her time.

The chic frames and polarized lenses protected her from the harsh sunlight of the French court, while the double-C logo reminds everyone who was the true power behind the throne. With a sly smile and a flick of her ruff collar, she surveys the scene, taking in the latest fashion faux pas and juicy court gossip, all while keeping her cool and looking fabulous.

'Beauty and the Beast' is a timeless story that originated in French folklore as 'La Belle et la Bête'—and its exploration of the internal world of the protagonist, Belle, is one of the main reasons for its enduring appeal. The most well-known version of the story was written by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740. Her version was later abridged and simplified by French author Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756, which became the more widely known and popular version of the story.

Belle's character embodies the values of elegance, fairness, and intellectual curiosity. Her journey towards discovering the Beast's inner beauty, beyond his rough exterior, reflects the ideal of looking beyond surface-level qualities to find true love. The story's impact on popular culture is evidence of its enduring relevance, and the universal human desire to find beauty and love out in the world.

Its exploration of Belle's internal world is a reflection of the human experience of self-discovery and transformation, themes that are also present across French literature and culture. Belle's journey towards finding her own voice, her independence, and her own inner beauty also reflects the then-changing roles of women in society, as well as the broader cultural shift towards individualism and self-expression.

'Beauty and the Beast' is a story that has transcended borders and cultures, and its pre-revolutionary origins imbue it, with a certain sense of fantasy and sophistication. Belle's journey towards discovering the Beast's true self has been a part of French literary and cultural traditions for centuries, and to this today, the fairy tale continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.

A collection of one-of-one artworks that make reference to, and are infused with inspiration derived from, the pages of European history—spanning the middle ages to the early modern period, to today.

Of a truth, as I traverse through the gardens, here at Versailles, my heart swells with joyous, jubilant elation. The loveliness that surrounds me—sunlight, greenery, shadow—is a cornucopia of delights, and my soul seems lifted by the grandeur of it all. 

The scent of blossoming flowers enfolds me with a warm embrace; their petals, an array of colors that ignites my senses. A gentle breeze caresses my skin, bearing with it, the whispers of nature's secrets and the potential for boundless dreams.

The grandeur of this garden fills me with a sense of wonder, reminding me that there is enchantment in this world if only I am willing to perceive it. The ornate sculptures and manicured hedges, stand like watchmen, observing me as I wander through winding pathways. 

The garden's fountains burst forth! Their aqueous tendrils unfurling in a dance of rapture. The cascading water glistens in the sunlight, beckoning me to join in its celebration. And so I do, twirling and spinning, I'm lost in the moment—free as a bird.

'History-Infused One-of-Ones'

Aztec warriors were highly skilled fighters who played a significant role in the expansion and success of the Aztec empire. They were trained from a young age and valued bravery and loyalty above all else. Aztec warriors wore distinctive clothing and armor, and fought with weapons such as the macuahuitl, a wooden sword with obsidian blades. They were also known for their discipline, organization, and ability to adapt to different terrains and battle tactics.

This collection was inspired by Aztec art, and history, and the enduring influence of their culture, today. Each artwork showcases an aspect of Aztec mythology and society—often glitched—such as Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl, and Tenochtitlan.

Teotihuacan was a mythical city in Aztec mythology that was believed to be the birthplace of the gods. According to legend, the gods Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca created the sun and moon there, and the city was home to many important temples and sacred sites. In Aztec art and architecture, Teotihuacan was often depicted as a place of great power and significance.

The landscape is both haunting and alluring, its distorted features and shapes captivating the imagination. At times, it seems to pulse and vibrate, creating a sense of unease and disorientation. But there is also a strange beauty in the space, with the soft, undulating contours of the land drawing the viewer in. Here, the boundaries between reality and the unknown blur, inviting exploration and discovery. It is a place that leaves an indelible mark on the mind, evoking a sense of wonder and a desire to explore the mysteries of the universe.

'The Strangest Secret'

Jeanne d'Arc (c. 1412-1432) is one of the most revered figures in the whole history of France. She was also, instrumental in securing the coronation of Charles VII of France (1403-1461), who reigned the Kingdom of France from 21 October 1422–22 July 1461. Born in Domrémy, she redefined gender roles and the stereotypes around them in the kingdom, at that time. She's best remembered for her tireless efforts that were instrumental to shifting France's lead during the Hundred Years War, which took place from 1337-1453. Using her triumphant visions and powers, including teleportation, Jeanne d'Arc visited Catherine de Medici at Château de Chenonceau, during the mid-sixteenth century. During her visit, she borrowed Catherine's MacBook Pro, Dalle2, and her suite of Adobe tools—which included the first version of photoshop—to create a series of self-portraits; the surviving 12 works are sickeningly stunning, exquisitely pixelated, and glitchy. 

Jeanne was that ahead of her time.

"To the world when it was half a thousand years younger, the outlines of all things seemed more clearly marked than to us. In Prada's 1444 A/W collection, time unravels in a fantastical display, captured in surreal street-synthography scenes.
