The "Golden Boy" draped in his gilded, "golden life" foil is making his usual way through the city. He is a fleeting signifier for the world’s need to arrive at a new philosophy of cultural “progress,” one that might depart decisively from destructive “get-rich-quick” schemes and unchecked economic expansion. The sight of a Sumo wrestler floating effortlessly under water challenges our conventional notions of what the human body can do and reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. We might look at someone and make assumptions based on their size, shape, or other physical characteristics, but these assumptions can be proven wrong with the right perspective. The Sumo wrestler floating under water is a prime example of this, as they demonstrate that even the heaviest and seemingly least agile athletes can possess a surprising amount of grace and power.

By embracing a positive view of our bodies and what they can accomplish, we can unlock new levels of strength, confidence, and self-awareness, and learn to appreciate and celebrate the diversity of the human form.

The contrast between the heavy sumo wrestler and the water serves as a stark metaphor for the power of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and achieve unexpected feats.

In the SUMO studies, lens-based artist Peter Nitsch delves into the intersection of photography and artificial surrealist interpretation and develops the sketches from a photographer's point of view. In these works we can also see how Nitsch deliberately works with mostly rounded and organic forms that may be a reference to Cubism. Nitsch has replaced the hard line geometry for softer edged compositions.

Despite being grounded in the reality of Sumo wrestling, the images possess a nostalgic quality. Each image is an homage to the ancient origins and storied art of Sumo and the wrestlers.

This art form, which originated in Japan centuries ago, is a fascinating world of contrasts and opposites. Sumo is a sport that is both energetic and calm, rigid and fluid, amusing and serious, and these contradictions are reflected in the captivating depictions of the wrestlers. Each of these works captures the voluptuous, sweeping curves of the Sumo wrestler in a way that is both playful and profound.

Far from being trivial objects, the round, soft bodies of the wrestlers are pure inspiration celebrating a form that deviates from rigid and idealized body shapes. One cannot help but be struck by the stark contrast between the hardness of the Sumo sport and the softness and roundness of the wrestlers' bodies. These contrasts are expressed throughout Nitsch’s compositions, which are infused with a sense of wonder and energy that genuinely captures the spirit of the sport.

Another element of the SUMO series is the theme of animism, a central belief in Shintoism, Japan's indigenous religion. With a keen eye for the fantastical, Nitsch weaves together a world where fictional animals and Sumo wrestlers coexist in perfect harmony. This concept is perhaps linked to Japan's love of cute character-based merchandise where Sumo wrestlers are juxtaposed with tiny, adorable characters to create an emotional connection between the consumer and the product. Nitsch's use of animals in his SUMO series reflects this cultural phenomenon, where even the most difficult and serious of subjects can be infused with cuteness and charm. Through his eye, he illuminates the intrinsic value and importance of all things in nature, including rocks, mountains, and natural phenomena, which are believed to possess a soul in Shintoism. His art invites us to immerse ourselves in a world of imagination and possibility.

Similar, within the urban landscape, bus stops function as beacons among the sea of concrete.
